“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Reve Lucide. It was a cafe that Mashiro's cousin, Misha, seemed to frequent even though Mashiro herself was the one who scouted it out. Ostensibly it was French in its design, but in the end it extended to mostly the facade and the visual aesthetic. Not that Mashiro really minded; the food was good and the atmosphere was gentle, so long as it wasn't too crowded. And so Mashiro decided to pass by it for brunch over the weekend on the way back home from the hospital. Despite Misha's offer, Mashiro decided to go on her own; after all it was a trip that she had made long before either Yumeko or Misha had come to Fukui. Being a weekend, the composer was in more casual clothes, consisting of a white turtle neck, a pale blue corduroy jumper that went to her knees, and very thick white thighighs. Though Mashiro was rather impartial to temperatures, winter's oncoming chill afforded the musician the opportunity to wear clothes that protected her from the sun without looking too out of place. A frigid blast of cold air greeted Mashiro as she stepped off the bus. It was actually two stops before where she'd normally get off and walk onto the Academy's campus, but ahead in the distance she could see the facade of the cafe which stood out from the more mundane surroundings. Even from a distance, the musician could make out its rather European aesthetic. It was rather nostalgic and reminded her of home, where her family's store, the Satou Confectionery, and her aunt's, the Shirayama Bakery, used similar styling. As she got closer, Mashiro could see a menu posted up inside a small glass cabinet and decided to take a look at it. However, there was another person in the way, so Mashiro waited politely for her turn. A few moments passed and worry began to bite at the albino, and as she walked to the girl's side, she noticed that she was trying her best to read the menu still. Upon closer inspection, with pale green eyes and blonde hair, Mashiro guessed that the girl was foreign, and thus was a having a hard time reading the French-and-Japanese menu. "<Excuse me...?>" Mashiro said to the girl. The pianist spoke in almost perfect English, with the slight tinge of Russian accent almost nearly gone. "<Do you need help...?>" MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

On the few trips she's made to the hospital, Ellie always spots the out-of-place building that's the French Cafe. The bus that she takes drives right by it, and with how different it looks as compared to the other Japanese-style buildings, it's kind of hard to miss. She's never caught the name of the restaurant, but she's been wanting to try it out ever since she saw it. Sadly, she hasn't gotten much of an opportunity to do so. At least, not until now.
This day, her check-up is a relatively short one. Add to that the fact that it's the weekend, and suddenly she's left with quite a bit of time to herself. A prime opportunity to explore more of the town that's near Fukui Academy. But first, she needs to get something to eat, for she is hungry. And what better place to go to than the cafe that she's been wanting to eat at for some time?
The day is a pretty chilly one, with a fitful wind that tugs at loose pieces of clothing and saps the heat away with insidious fingers. To combat the cold, Ellie has dressed appropriately. Her long butterscotch hair, left unbound, spills out from under a soft, gray knit hat. The lower part of the hat has a simple green leaf pattern that encircles it. Wrapped around her neck sits a silky, pashmina scarf. It's a solid green that is slightly darker than her own eyes. Her coat is a saddle-brown that's not too bulky. It's well insulated with a green-plaid, fleece inner lining. Her pants are a simple pair of blue jeans and her shoes are a pair of running sneakers. Smokey-gray with green laces, of course. Her hands are covered by knit gloves, the match to her hat. As she is, the only skin showing is Ellie's face.
Her hair frames her face, the slight wave in it causing it to poof up out of her scarf. Strands sometimes drift in front of her face, which she absentmindedly blows out of the way with a puff of breath. Ellie's usual smile and bright eyes are not present. At the moment, her brow is furrowed in concentration as she stands outside, trying to read the menu. Unfortunately, she's having a tough time of it. Her reading and writing skills in Japanese are not all that good. And she knows next to no French. Biting her lip, she tries her best to figure out what the menu says, but she just can't make heads nor tails of it.
Guess I'm gonna have ta go off the pictures, she thinks despondently. Leaning in, she peers intently at the menu. Before she can make a choice based on the provided images, a voice speaks out. Not only that, but the words are in English! Starting in surprise, Ellie quickly turns towards the person talking to her.
Her eyes widen ever so slightly when she takes in the other's appearance. It's those red eyes, though, that really captures her attention. But a question was asked of her, and it would be rude to just stand there and stare. Blinking, she looks away, her cheeks slightly colored by her embarrassment.
"<Oh, um... Yes, please. If you don't mind, that is. I'd be most grateful.>" Her reply is quiet and polite, her southern drawl unmistakable. Turning to partially face the menu, she glances sideways at the other girl, a bashful smile tugging at her lips. "<I'm still learning Japanese and I don't know French at all. So I can't really read the menu...>"
Her voice peters out as another gust of wind kicks up. She ducks her chin into her scarf, a small shiver worming it's way through her body.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. That reaction, one of sudden shock then of embarrassed cast-aside glances, was one that Mashiro was all-too-familiar with, but in seeing how rather polite she was being, Mashiro was able to forgive the girl this time. The usual frown that the pianist wore slowly turned into a faint smile as she respectfully bowed. "<Ah...it is okay, I do not mind at all. Please, be at ease...>" Mashiro trailed off as she realized that she did not yet have a name, but before she could ask, a strong gust blew past her from behind. Mashiro was rarely bothered by cold conditions, but she noticed that the girl in front of her was being visibly affected by it. Inside the cafe was likely to be sheltered from the wind, if not outright much warmer, so Mashiro resolved to help the girl out as quickly as possible so that they can both warm up indoors. Quickly, the musician skittered up to the menu display and said, "<Ah...Excuse me, one moment please."> Even though it was not the first time that Mashiro was able to look at the menu, her crimson eyes scanned the artificially parchment-textured paper to glean its offerings. The contents in Japanese were more than easy enough for the native Japanese speaker to understand, but Mashiro found herself at odds trying to relay that content in English. Thankfully, there was only a handful of unique items and for the rest she could group them up a bit. "<Ah...It appears that there are four main items to choose from. There are...soups... and some salads...a few sandwiches, and...beverages.>" Mashiro said, pausing every now and then as she tried to find the proper words in English. Her pale finger running along the glass that covered the menu. "<Ah...I guess we can start there? Which of the four would you like?>" MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Even as the other girl stares at the menu, Ellie can't help but have her own gaze drawn to her unusual companion. Her skin, what little of it she's able to see, is so pale it almost seems to glow in the day's light. The white hair, despite being tossed about by the wind, only adds to her pristine projection. Her blue and white clothing goes even farther to enhance the image. Once again, she finds her attention drawn to the other's eyes. They are such an unusual color. She's never seen crimson eyes on a person before. She wants to ask about them, but she knows that's just about the rudest thing she could do. Especially since they've only just met, without even having exchanged names yet.
It's with anticipation that Ellie watches the other girl step up to the menu and look it over. She's quite hungry, her early breakfast having long since worn off. This, coupled with how cold it is, only serves to further increase her desire for a chance to get something warm and filling to eat. So when the other girl starts relaying what the menu says, she listens attentively, her pale green eyes focusing on the other girl's face.
Of the four choices, she knows exactly what she wants to order. But as she opens her mouth to answer, another chilly gust blasts them. A strong shudder hits her, her mouth clacking shut at the motion. Her hands fly up to her chest and clasp together. Her chin ducks once again behind her scarf, eyes squeezed tight shut for a moment. It all happens quickly, but her posture stays tense even after the wind has abated.
Cracking her eyes opens, Ellie returns her attention to the other girl standing before her. She speaks, her words stuttering slightly, "<I-I know w-where I'd like to s-start. B-but could we go inside f-first? P-please?>" Her hands remain together, her body trembling ever so slightly.
She's never quite been able to take the cold.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Eyes entranced by Mashiro's anomolous condition did not go unnoticed. After years of feeling other people's curious gaze, Mashiro was no longer surprised by it and in a sense was no longer bothered by it. But it still gave her a sense of wary weariness. And because of that, Mashiro found it hypocritical to linger on the physical appearance of what was extremely likely to be a foreigner. Another cold gust passed around Mashiro. Though her hair seemed to be tossed about by the wind, the muscian's usual expression did not. But by watching the shuddering and curling up of the other girl, it was increasingly clear that reading the menu on the outside was no longer a good idea. Reflexively, Mashiro looked down to what she was wearing and realized that she had no coat to give to the girl. Thankfully, the distance to the door, normally open but now closed due to the cold, wasn't too far. "<Ah, yes, let us go quickly.>" Mashiro said, moving behind to place a hand on the other girl's back. Normally, Mashiro would be more hands-off, but her worry over hypothermia overrode everything else."<Ah, my apologies, and excuse me, let us move quickly." The plan was to shuffle inside as quickly as possible. One hand gently pushed forward while the other opened the door where the two was greeted with a blast of warm air. Now inside, Mashiro noticed another menu near the counter-top and pointed at it. "Ah...there was a menu here the entire time..." Mashiro said in Japanese before standing up next to it and looking around. It seemed like the cold kept much of the patrons at home, as there were less people than Mashiro had expected. At her request, the other girl places her hand on her back and applies a gentle pressure. Her words are spoken quickly and are laced with worry. Laughing softy, despite her trembles, Ellie nods and reaches for the door handle. "<Okay, okay,>" she says, even as her unusual companion snags the handle before she's able to. The other girl opens the door for her and ushers her inside. Raising her hands up, Ellie smiles and moves forward without resistance."<You ain't gonna hear no complaints from me!>"
Once inside, she can't help the sigh of relief that escapes her. It is markedly warmer in the cafe. Especially now that the wind isn't stealing her heat away. Her shivers subside after a few moments as she glances around. There's not that many people in the cafe, but considering how chilly the day is, she's not too surprised. Who would want to be out and about when it's so cold? She certainly wouldn't be, if she didn't need to!
Her attention returns to the other girl when she hears her say something. In Japanese, no less. It takes her a moment to translate it, but when she does, Ellie steps up next to her companion. She replies in Japanese, her accent a bit thicker than she likes and syntax clearly of the Kansai-ben dialect. "I can at least speak a bit of Japanese. I just can't read it all that well." Her pale eyes shift over to the other girl's face for a brief moment, a sheepish smile tilting her lips upwards. She's a bit embarrassed at her speaking ability, but she knows the only way to get better is to practice.
Gaze turning towards the menu, she leans forward, her eyes scanning over it. Yep, still can't understand it, she grumbles to herself, her thoughts a bit disgruntled. Another sigh slips out of her, though this one is distinctly more frustrated than the previous one. Shaking her head, she breaks herself away from going down that road. In due time, she gently chides herself. You're still learning.
"But, as I was saying outside, I know what I'd like to start with," she says, her attention once again returning to the kind stranger she stands next to. "For a day this chilly, I'd say soup would be the perfect thing."
Once again, her lips tilt upwards in a soft smile. The corners of her eyes crinkle ever so slightly, their pale green shimmering in the thin light streaming through the large window that looks out on the street. Stray strands of her hair gleam gold as they float in the still cafe air, stirred by her soft puffs of breathe.
She's quite glad to be inside, out of the cold.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. The sound of footsteps approaching pulled Mashiro's attention back to the girl she was guiding. The fact that she was speaking in Japanese wasn't surprising; after all, she did say that she was learning. But the use of 'uchi' instead of 'watashi' and a very informal, almost bluntly-cut word-cut pointed right at a Kansai-ben dialect. As far as Mashiro was made aware, they didn't teach Kansai-ben as part of learning Japanese. Perhaps it was like the way Mashiro had learned English, and that the green-eyed girl learned Japanese via someone close them instead of formally in a school setting. Mashiro let the other girl have another chance to read from the menu again, this time free from the constraints put on by the chilly weather outside. But a sigh made it clear that there was still no progress that could be made. For a moment, the musician idly wondered whether it was because the girl had learned the Kansai dialect and thus had a difficulty understanding the more-common Tokyo dialect. In any case, the girl confirmed what Mashiro had heard from her friends overseas - it was far easier to listen to and speak Japanese than it was to read it. "Ah, a soup sounds like a good idea," Mashiro said in agreement. The musician proceeded to look over the menu once more before giving a quick rundown of the types of soups that were available and the different sizes, gesturing with her hands to show how large the bowls were. Thankfully, there weren't many types of soups so the list that Mashiro had to translate was short, save for the list of breads that could be paired with it. "Ah, I personally enjoy the tomato bisque with the bread roll is what I like to order on a cold day," Mashiro concluded. That was what pianist had decided on before she even arrived, but she was willing to wait to make sure the other girl was able to order her food. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Ellie tries to read along the menu as she listens to the other girl go over the list of soups and stews. A name jumps out at her, one that's in French. The image next to the name is of, what looks like, a hearty soup consisting of a dark broth with red meat and mushrooms in it. It's a little hard to tell, since the picture is a bit small, but just the thought of eating something like that sets her saliva glands a working!
Nodding at the other's choice, she smiles. "It sounds like you come here often. Since you already know what you want."
Turning back towards the mounted menu, she leans a bit closer to it. Gesturing at it, she give an embarrassed chuckle. "I'm probably going to butcher the pronunciation of this, but the Boeuf Bourguignon sounds like just what I'm looking for." Glancing sideways at her pale companion, Ellie says, her expression rueful. "That's all I can really pick out, though. If only all the meals had pictures on the menu. I'd have an easier time of it."
Looking around the mostly vacant restaurant, she nervously raises a hand to fiddle with the ends of one of her strands of hair.
"Do we just go in and take a seat? Or do we wait to be seated?"
Another pause, she gathers her courage and then turns to face Mashiro directly. Taking a deep breathe, she exhales it slowly and then tries to meet the other girl's eyes.
"Would you mind sharing a table with me? I might want to order something else, and I don't feel confident enough to pull that off." Another small smile tilts her lips up at her next statement. "And I would greatly enjoy your company, if you'd be kind enough to oblige me."
Quietly, she watches her companion closely, her fingers nervously twirling around the strands of her hair.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. With a nod, Mashiro confirmed that she was a recurring patron of the cafe, then again as Ellie made her choice of soup. Mashiro had some ability to speak French, and could pronouce Boeuf Bourguignon, but her limit was mainly food, so she knew she had no right to try and correct Ellie. In any case, Mashiro couldn't help but smile as she noticed Ellie's nervous tick. It was exactly the same kind of thing herself and her twin sister would do when flusted or nervous. There was no issue with Ellie sharing a table, and now that Mashiro thought more about it, there was likely a story to tell. "Ah, it's okay. I wouldn't mind sharing a table with you, if you don't mind chatting with me a little longer," Mashiro replied, reverting back to Japanese the way Ellie had. The pianist realized she still didn't have the name of the girl in front of her, but figured that it was probably better to ask once they were seated instead of breaking the flow of conversation. She gestured to the front counter, where a young woman, seemingly been listening the entire time, waved to the two of them with a warm smile. "Ah, what you do here is you go up to the counter, order your food and pay for it, then you find a table and wait there." Both Mashiro and the woman at the counter gestured towards the empty tables. "They'll bring it to your table for you." Mashiro explained, adding on "Ah, and if you want, I can help you order at the counter too." MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Ellie breaks out into a bright smile at her companion's acceptance of her request for a shared table. She rises up onto her tip-toes and falls back down to her heals in an partial bounce of excitement. Clasping her hands together, she leans forward, her pale eyes twinkling.
"Really? You don't mind? Thank you!" She doesn't yell it out, but the energy behind her words is obvious. The relief on her face and in her voice is also hard to miss.
"'I'll gladly chat with you," she adds, her expression open and friendly. "We've only just met, after all. It's good to get to know folks."
Some of her hair poofs up at her movement, framing her face even more. Absently she tries to pat it down and tuck it back into her scarf as she listens to the other girl's explanation of how this place functions. She nods as she listens, her gaze drifting between the woman at the counter and her companion. Her lips twitch up in amusement when the both of them gesture towards the tables at almost the same time. It takes a bit of effort, but she manages to swallow the giggle that came with the smile.
"Well, I at least know what soup I'd like to eat," Ellie says with a decisive nod. "I'll order after you, since you already know what you want."

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Unconciously, Mashiro took a step back as the other girl bounced and leaned in, surprised by how...friendly this girl was. She didn't even know the girl's name, though given how rushed they were to get out of the cold, Mashiro figured that it couldn't have been helped. In any case, Mashiro's intuition was telling her that there was no ill intent, despite all the energy. The musician managed a smile, trying to match the cheerfulness shown to her, but still was twirling the long lock of hair that ran down her right side. "Well, if that has been settled, let us go forth," Mashiro said softly, nodding slowly. After taking a breath, she gestured for the other girl to follow her to the counter top where the woman at the cashier was warmly waiting, albeit with a curious smile on her face. "Good afternoon," Mashiro calmly greeted, continuing with, "I would like one <tomato bisque> please." Mashiro tried to be as clear as possible to be an example. The woman at the counter seemed to have been listening the entire time as her hands were moving even before Mashiro finished speaking. The woman echoed the order in confirmation, allowing the pianist to step aside to let the other girl place her order. She looked to the other girl, trying to give her an encouraging smile as she gestured that it was their turn. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

It doesn't slip by Ellie's notice that the other girl suddenly seems a bit nervous. The slight retreat from her, plus the hair twirling, are two distinct signs that she picks up on immediately. Oh no! Was I too loud just then? A spike of worry shoots through her. She's not the most excitable person around, but she does have her moments. And she'd been thrilled that her companion acquiesced to her request. Despite her worry, though, the other girl returns her smile with one of her own.
Still, she doesn't want to put the other girl off any further. So she reigns in her excitement at meeting a new person, and composes herself. She takes in a deep breathe, and then lets out a soft sigh, attempting to expel her sudden energy. Her eyes are still a little brighter than usual, and her smile a little bit wider. But she makes sure that her movements aren't too spirited.
At her companion's statement, Ellie nods her head and gives a soft cough. "Ahem. Yes, let's order then, shall we?" she asks as she follows the other girl to the counter. It doesn't take long at all for the first order to be completed. Ellie gives a nervous grin back at the encouraging smile that the other girl directs her way. Taking a soft breath, she turns that nervous grin towards the woman behind the counter. Nodding her head decisively, she steps on and gives her order. In her heavily accented Japanese. Practice makes perfect, after all. Well, mostly perfect.
"I'd like the <Boeuf Bourguignon> soup bowl, please," she says, her words slow but clear. "And some bread and water, too. If you don't mind." She feels the intense need to say ma'am, but she's not sure what the equivalent is in Japanese. So she says it in her head, in the hopes that she's not coming off as rude in her attempt to order food.
She throws a quick questioning glance at the other girl's way. Hopefully she's said everything correctly.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. With crimson eyes softly observing, Mashiro watched the other girl place her order. The pronunciation isn't quite right despite trying to say things slow and clearly, but it was good enough to be understood without further thinking, even with the surprising Kansai-ben. "Excellent, one <Boeuf Bourguignon>, with some bread and water, right." The woman echoed, pronouncing the dish in perfect French. She smiled to try and let the other girl know that for the most part, she had a good grasp of the language. The cashier finally looked over to Mashiro to ask. "And water for you too, jou-san?" Mashiro nodded and bowed slightly, out of habit more than anything else. The woman at the cashier nodded and smiled, politely thanking the both of them for their patronage. Mashiro bowed slightly again in return before gesturing for the other girl to follow her to the table. With careful grace, the pianist took her seat at the farther end of the round table. Mashiro was aware that her natural expression was a frown, so she was trying to make a concious effort to keep smiling, one that was working to give her a slightly nervous smile. Patiently, the musician waited for the other girl to get seated before starting to talk again. "<Ah...my apologies for the rush before,>" Mashiro started, shifting things back to English. She bowing in her seat in apology. "<I am afraid that we did not get to do a proper introduction. My name is Mashiro Satou. It is a pleasure to meet you.> Once more, Mashiro bowed while sitting, this time with her greeting. Now that Mashiro thought of it, usually someone around Mashiro's age and of foreign appearance was a student at Fukui, but Mashiro didn't want to assume and wanted the other girl to confirm it. Watching the bowing exchange between her companion and the cashier, Ellie wonders if she should be bowing as well. But it doesn't seem to be the case, for the cashier smiles at her and then the other girl gestures to her. Following behind the pale girl, she can't help but admire the graceful movements of the other. She even makes sittin' down look so smooth! she thinks in wonder. Returning the smile directed her way with one of her own, Ellie pulls out a chair positioned directly across from the other girl's seat. Hooking a foot around the leg of the chair, she casually sits down in it. Her movements are confident, filled with an easy and effortless looseness. Granted, Ellie's by no means a clumsy individual. But she's far from the ladylike grace displayed by her companion.
The table they've been seated at is round, but not very large. Just big enough for two people to sit and eat at. A large window, looking out on a street different from the one they'd entered from, lets in the daylight. Finding herself a little farther from the table than she likes, she scoots the chair forward a bit. Just as she's gotten herself situated, her companion begins asking her questions. And in English, no less! The relief that washes through Ellie shows clearly on her face. Thank goodness she speaks and understands English! "<Oh no, it's all right! We were tryin' ta get out of the cold, after all,>" she replies, gratefully switching back to her native tongue. She raises her hands at the apology and the bow. "<Ya don't gotta apologize. Really.>" She gives a reassuring smile, which takes on a soft warmth at the other's introduction. "<Well then, Miss Mashiro. I'd say the pleasure's all mine! My name's Eleanor Harper. But if you could call me Ellie, that'd be best.>" Pale green's twinkling, her lips quirk up in a teasing grin. "<I tend to not respond as quickly to my full name, ya see. Most folks, outside of my parents, just don't call me Eleanor.>" Leaning forward, she peers into the other girl's eyes. Her hair shifts a bit at her movement, a few honeyed strands drifting loose from her scarf to float lazily around her face. Not seeming to notice them, Ellie asks, her expression curious and somewhat expectant, "<I've been wantin' to ask ya this, since ya first spoke to me. But do ya happen to go to Fukui Academy?"> After a brief pause, the teasing smile returns, this time with a slight eyebrow raise, "<As a student, that is.>"

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Crimson eyes watched curiously as the other girl sat down. In the rush to get seated, Mashiro never realized how...laid-back this girl seemed to be, issue with language barriers aside. But that made sense, seeing how readily she was able to talk to the pianist. And overall, there seemed to be a familiar aura, like someone in her family abroad had a similar feel to this girl. The other girl's face of relief told Mashiro that switching back to English was the right move, even though the accent and the informal dialects was a curveball that Mashiro had to handle. It was a strange feeling to be called 'Miss', but that was the English equivalent of -san, right? Or something of the like. That said, jumping to given names, no, right to nicknames, was also a bit of a shock, albeit one Mashiro was able to hide beneath an understanding nod. Thankfully, Ellie was able to spring the question that Mashiro had in her mind first, to which the musician nodded gracefully again in confirmation. "<Ah. That is correct, Ellie-san. I am indeed a student at Fukui Academy, studying musical composition.>" Mashiro replied. "<Ah, and does that mean that Ellie-san is a student too?>" The pianist's hand went to tug at the edge of her bangs that ran extra long down her right side. "<Ah...apologies for the sudden barrage of questions, especially since it relates to language, but...>" Mashiro trailed off, her crimson eyes looking to the side as she tried to find the right words. <"Ah...As far as I was aware, most schools, Fukui included, taught the Tokyo-ben dialect, and not Kansai-ben? For someone to be learning Japanese and going right for the Kansai-ben dialect is...rare.>" MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

"<Haha, I knew it!>" Ellie softy exclaims at Mashiro's confirmation to her question. A triumphant grin takes hold of the blond, her eyes lighting up with her satisfaction. "<I figured you might be,>" she adds. Leaning forward a little, she steeples her gloved fingers in front of her. "<You speak English very well. Better than most folks I've encountered since comin' to Japan. So, either you've been around other English speakers for an extended period of time. Or you've had a very good education and been especially tutored.>" Expression turning thoughtful, she tacks on, almost as an after thought,"<Or it could be both.>" Shrugging the thought away, she leans back in her chair, right leg crossing over the left. Her posture is confident and open. Raising her right hand, she gently taps a finger against her cheek. "<Whatever it may be, the most likely place for you to be attendin', since you look to be high school age, would be Fukui Academy.>" Smile turning teasing, she continues. "<Besides, with your smooth grace and ladylike charm, I can't imagine you bein' anywhere else.>" Her tone is warm, her pale greens twinkling with good humor. She greatly enjoys meeting new people. Especially ones as interesting as the girl sitting across from her.
"<Music composition? That sounds like it could be fun!>" She's not had any formal training in music herself, just a bit of choir when she was younger. But she knows enough to know that writing music is much more difficult than what most folks perceive.
Nodding at the question, she uncrosses her legs and sits up a bit straighter. "<Yep! I just recently started goin' to Fukui Academy. I'm in for writin' and illustration. Still haven't figured everythin' out yet, but I'll get to it eventually.>" She gives a nonchalant shrug at that. She doesn't seem to be particularly worried about it.
Surprise flashes across Ellie's face when Mashiro asks her about her Japanese. Then she laughs. It's light and airy. Careless. "<Ya know, you're actually the first person to ask me that!>"
Glancing down at her hands, she realizes that she's still wearing her gloves. Which leads her to realize that she's still wearing all of her winter garb. Staring down at her hands, she slowly removes both gloves. Once she's done that, and sets them to the side, she returns her attention back to the other girl.
"<I had a friend back home. We saw each other all the time and hung out a lot. She was from Osaka and I wanted to know more about her home. She's the one that taught me.>" Her smile turns a bit wistful, but loses none of it's warmth. "<That's why I'm not too good at readin' or writin' Japanese. Before we got very far in her teachin' me how, she had to leave.>"
Raising her hands to her neck, she unwinds her scarf and places it next to her gloves. Rising from her seat, she removes her coat and hangs it on the back of her chair. Underneath the jacket she's wearing a long sleeved, forest green button down shirt. It ends right above her hip-line. A simple leather belt, darkened to a rich brown patina, rests at her hips. The bronze buckle flashes briefly with her movement. Sitting back down, she drapes her scarf and gloves over one side of the chair. Lastly, she takes off her hat and shoves it into one of her coat pockets.
Her hair has been freed from its bonds. Many stray strands float out from her head, gleaming in the buttery light of the restaurant. The rest of it is a butterscotch wave that flows past her shoulders and tumbles down her back. It's a bit frizzy around the edges, and still crackles with static electricity.
"<Ah... Much better!>" She directs another smile Mashiro's way. "<It'll be more comfy, eatin' like this.>"

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Mashiro continued to tug at her whispy white hair to hide her embarrassment. It was rather startling how sharp Ellie seemed to be. Through her family's shop, she indeed meet a lot of English-speakers. And on top of that, her cousins tutored her extensively, including fellow shop-owner Misha. Perhaps most embarrasing was Ellie's comment on the manner in which Mashiro carried herself. For some reason, that comment seemed to stab at her more than expected, and she diverted her crimson eyes to the side for a moment. Where did she learn how to act in such a manner? Miki was more gruff and abrasive than sandpaper, Ageha was likely to deck you at the slightest provocation, and Yuki might as well have laser eyes for how much she stared people down. Maybe it was from Yuko and Misha. Or was it another 'gift' from her wayward 'father'? But Ellie seemed more than happy to give Mashiro something else to think about. So she was a writer and an illustrator. The mention of writing made the pianist wonder if she and her cousin Yumeko had crossed paths, but that thought gave way to awe. Two different fields. Was she trying to write a book then draw for it too? Then the topic turned back to Japanese, and the composer's face returned to it's usual slight frown as she tried to process and understand the situation. So instead of formal schooling, Ellie learned from a friend. In the end, not too different from how Mashiro learned English, and she figured early on that her odd Russian accent was due to the fact that it was her Russian cousin who taught her. At the sight of Ellie starting to take off her more burdensome attire, Mashiro became rather concious of what she was wearing. Even with how cold it was, there really was not much Mashiro was wearing, much less take off. The sound of footsteps took Mashiro's attention, and at the corner of her eyes she saw a waitress approach the two of them, placing their respective orders in front of them. From where she sat, Mashiro bowed, thanking the waitress before softly muttering 'itadakimasu'. Taking a moment to think a bit more on Ellie's story, the composer found herself more compelled to ask questions than eat, at least for now. "<Ah...well you are good enough that you are taking classes here without much issue, correct?>" Mashiro said, tilting her head with a frown. "<Ah...but...what do you mean by 'leave'? I-if that is an acceptable thing to ask you."> MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

It's not long after she's taken off her outer layer of winter clothing that their food arrives. Eyes lighting up, Ellie gives a cheerful smile and a soft "Thank you" to the waitress. Her thanks comes a beat behind Mashiro's, who also throws in a bow. Wondering if she should have bowed as well, she watches as the other girl turns to her food and murmurs a soft 'itadakimasu'. Glancing down at her own steaming bowl of soup, she gives her own "itadakimasu" before pulling her bowl of Boeuf Bourguignon closer to her. The bread brought with the meal also looks quite delicious, steam rising in thin trickles above the small loaf. The scents wafting her way are quite enticing. Reaching towards her spoon in anticipation, she grips it, but pauses when her companion directs a question her way.
Looking up from her food, Ellie peers into the other's eyes. A small grimace takes hold of her and her pale green's darken a bit. It's a brief moment, a flash of emotion, but it's not something she tries to hide. A rueful smile tilts her lips up, and she leans back a bit in her chair.
"<I'm okay in most classes. The teachers know I need a bit more time to work on my readin' and writin'. And most of them are pretty accommodatin'.>" A soft sigh escapes her and she shakes her head. "<Unfortunately, any classes that require me to take lottsa notes, or ones that are heavy in Japanese written assignments, well...>" Another frown takes hold of her and she glances down at her food once again, before quickly returning her embarrassed attention back to Mashiro.
"<Let's just say I ain't doin' too good in those classes.>"
She doesn't like to admit that she's struggling, but she's usually not one to lie. Especially when it comes her own shortcomings. Giving a small shrug, she adds, "<But, I've been makin' due, so far. Might need to get a tutor later on, though. We'll see.>"
Returning her attention back to her food, she picks up the spoon and dips it into the broth. Scooping up a large amount, she pops the whole thing into her mouth. Right as Mashiro asks her second question. Blinking in surprise, she returns her gaze back to her table-mate and gives her a lopsided grin. Chewing her food slowly, Ellie savors the rich flavor of meat, onion, vegetables and various spices that fills her mouth. A soft sound of contentment escapes her, before she swallows.
"<This is real good!>", she exclaims, her eyes sparkling with her enthusiasm and smile wide.
Recalling that a question had been asked of her, she quickly puts her spoon down and once again directs her attention to Mashiro.
"<But, to answer your question, Harumi's family was only in the States for a few years. Her dad's company was transferrin' him back home to Japan, so of course, she went back with him>." Which was true enough. Granted, he'd requested to be sent home early, due to his daughter's illness, but that's a detail she feels doesn't need to be mentioned. No need to make a new acquaintance feel bad in their first meeting.
"<We're still friends, though. Parted on good terms.>". She nods and smiles at this. Her eyes are warm, though wistfulness once again enters her expression. She's very glad that she met Harumi. Very glad indeed.
Gaze dropping to Mashiro's meal, she asks, her tone teasing, "<So, how's your food taste? Is it good?>"
She raises an eyebrow, her lips quirked up ever so slightly, for she knows for a fact that Mashiro hasn't even taken a bite yet.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. The small grimace Ellie gave did not go unnoticed, and Mashiro tilted her head and frowned, blinking as if she was not understanding what she was seeing. Was it the cold? They were out for a while, but perhaps it was a linger effect. Was it pain? Yes, Kiri-nii would wince that like when the wounds on his throat and shoulder worked up, but as far as the pianist could tell, there was no other signs that pointed towards an injury. But Mashiro knew better than to bring it up, stowing the event in the back of her mind. That Ellie was struggling with her classes only served to deepen Mashiro's worry, and a sense of deja vu seemed to creep in. Who was it, long ago, that Mashiro offered to help with English, albeit through her cousin Misha's help. Regardless, she was ready to make the offer again, but was finding it a little difficult to sneak the offer into the conversation, especially since it moved to the subject of her friend from Osaka, now having a name: Harumi. So, this Harumi-san was only in the United States for a short time, moving because of her father's business. That must have been harsh, and once more Mashiro felt a little crushed by the notion. Now that Ellie was in Japan, it would have been easier for the two to talk to each other, or rather, they are talking to each other, if Ellie said that they were still friends. Yet a creeping fear told her that she should probably offer another cousin's services, this time Yuki's. "<Hm? Ah...right...>" Once more, the topic turned back to food, and Mashiro realized that the entire time she was stirring her soup with her spoon. "<Ah, well, if they haven't changed how they make the soup, I am sure it is still the same wonderful soup from before,>" Mashiro replied with a smile before taking a spoonful of soup. "<Ah...ah. It still is the same good soup from before. I think Misha-nee has asked for the recipe for it before. Ah!>" That little tangent was just the right opportunity that she needed. "<Ah...speaking of Misha-nee, if you still need help with the Japanese language, I'd be happy to help you, though...I think Misha-nee is a little more skilled at teaching than I am...>" Mashiro said before an easy-to-notice blush spread across her pale skin and she started to tug on the extra long strands of hair on her left side. When Mashiro starts to eat her food, Ellie returns to own. She reaches forward and tears off a chunk of her bread as she listens to the other girl speak. She's glad that the food is still as good as Mashiro remembers. It's always nice when a good restaurant remains consistent in it's quality. And so far, this restaurant has been excellent! Both in the service and the food. Dipping her bread in the soup, she leans forward in her seat and quickly scoops it up and into her mouth. A little of the soup drips off the bread and back into the bowl, but she's able to get most of it into her mouth. Chewing quickly, she straightens in her seat and returns her attention back to Mashiro when the other girl gives a soft exclamation. The bread is soft and fluffy and mixes quite well with the soup. She swallows her mouthful and grabs a napkin to wipe away any soup that may have been around her lips. Setting the napkin next to her plate, she contemplates the offer. She really isn't doing all that well in the classes that were Japanese intensive. Especially history and the humanities. It would be nice to have someone to help her out. It doesn't take long for her to come to a decision. In her thought, Ellie had raised her right hand and started to absently twirl some hair around her index finger. With her decision made, she stops the twirling and raises her eyes, which had dropped down to her soup bowl. Raising her gaze, she returns her pale greens to Mashiro. Amusement shoots through her when she sees the other girl also messing with her hair. A light chuckle escapes her and she drops her hand away from her own hair. "<Seems like we have similar habits,>" she says, her voice soft and playful. She's noticed the blush, but isn't quite sure why the other girl seems embarrassed. So, she's trying to lighten the mood with a bit of humor. Hopefully it puts the other girl at ease. "<But yes, I'd actually love it if someone could help me out. I'm strugglin' a fair bit more than I'd anticipated."> "<And I don't mind if it's you who helps me out,>" she adds, a warm smile taking hold of her. Her pale eyes peer kindly into Mashiro's crimson own.
"<Ah, but if you think this... Misha-nee?">, she questions, interrupting herself as she tries to figure out if that's the other person's name or title. But then she shrugs and continues, since it's the only name she's been given to work with. "<Well, if you feel that she'd be a better fit, then I'll gladly take it. I do need the help.>" Tilting her head just the slightest bit to the right, she asks, her voice hopeful, "<You think she'd be up for it, though? I wouldn't want to impose.>"
