“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Room 105 wasn't that far from Room 101. The rooms were generous for what a dorm usually was, but it was still only four door down. Still, it seemed like such a huge distance for Mashiro to walk, and now she found herself standing outside the dorm room of the first friend she had made. It was a spur of the moment thing. A Saturday afternoon where Mashiro found herself with nothing really to do. It was too early to start making dinner for her family, too late to go into town and wander the shops, music had already saturated her mind, the rest of family in Tokyo weren't chatting on Skype, and she was not in the mood for her usual time killing activites. And so the idea of visiting Kyoko popped into the pianist's mind. Being a Saturday, Mashiro was incredibly casually dressed, wearing a dark blue jumperskirt over a faded white blouse. In her hands was a ornate wooden box containing her tea set and a few bags of rice crackers, sour gummy candies, chocolates, and strawberry chews. A setup for a welcoming party, in a way, even though they had been in the doorms for a while already, but it was the best idea that Mashiro could come up with instead of just suddenly showing up empty-handed. Still, there was the issue that Mashiro still was outside of Kyoko's door without giving her any advance warning. Not that she could have given the painter advance warning since she had no contact information and no classes in common. Plus, if Mashiro remembered things correctly, there was an open invitation to visit. What would be the worst outcome, anyways? At first, Mashiro thought that it would be a polite rejection, if Kyoko was even there at all, but doubts soon crept into her mind. Then Mashiro shook her head to push away her fears and raised one hand to knock at Kyoko's door, softly calling out, "Ah...K-kitamura-san? It's Ma- Satou Mashiro. I'm just here...to chat a bit." There was a bit of an awkward pause before the composer added. "Ah, and I...ah...I brought tea and snacks too." MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Kyoko sat at her desk, pondering her project. The surface was littered with a bunch of sketches she had begun and then abandoned. The blue haired girl sighed at her current blank piece of paper. Nothing good was coming to her. She'd seemed to have hit a painting block. Or maybe she only performed well when her father was breathing down her neck. It was possible. The thought made her question if she even liked painting if she couldn't do it when she was on her own. And if that was the case, then what did she even have for herself? What was hers? Sometimes she felt like a soulless automaton, performing as needed with no passions of her own. She thought she had things she liked, even if she did keep them hidden from her parents... but now she was full of even more doubt. Perhaps her father had finally crushed everything she was and Kyoko was truly becoming the tool she was suppose to be. Maybe that was what her mother had meant all those years ago, when she had told Kyoko that she would understand her happiness one day. Once there was nothing left in her, simply doing what she was meant to would likely make her content, in a sense. Kyoko closed her eyes and lowered her head into her hand, arm propped on the desk. Even when she was alone, she couldn't just be herself. Why couldn't she just be Kyoko? Though, who even was that? She was no longer sure...
There was a knock at the door. Kyoko lifted her head and looked at it. It clearly wasn't her roommate, she would just walk in. Her roommate was out currently. She was out a lot, actually. Perhaps someone to see her? Then a soft voice came muffled through the door. So it was Satou-san? Kyoko remembered the silver haired girl from the park. She had said the girl could visit whenever she liked, and here she was. Frankly, Kyoko was happy for the distraction. Getting lost in her own thoughts was never good in the end. Kyoko would be so much happier speaking to someone else right now. She wasn't a big Kyoko fan at the moment. The girl got up from her desk and walked over to the door. She opened it and peered out side, finding the unusual looking girl waiting there. Kyoko stood a few inches taller and looked down on the girl. Kyoko was likewise dressed casually, at least for her. She wore a dark grey skirt and a light pink t-shirt that fit loose around the shoulders, currently shifted to the right. Her hair was not done up currently, and long blue strands hung down in a cascade. She smiled at her guest, a pretty and sincere smile that showed nothing of her earlier thoughts.
"Satou-san, konnichiwa." Kyoko greeted with a bow. She stepped back and opened the door wider for the girl to enter with ease, "Please, come in." she said. Assuming Satou-san entered, Kyoko would close the door behind her. Then she moved to the little table to clear it of it's clutter. She then turned the lamp on her desk off and turned the main room light on. Kyoko liked working in low light. She picked up a hair tie and started messing about with her hair.
"I apologize for the mess." she said, though aside from the current state of the desk, the room was immaculate, "How have you been, Satou-san?" she asked pleasantly.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. There was a bit of silence before Mashiro could hear footsteps coming towards her. Seeing Kyoko in the doorway was a relief, and hearing that it was okay to enter even more so, but seeing Kyoko's outfit made Mashiro feel like she was a tad overdressed. Still, a happy smile spread across the albino's face. "Ah, Konnichiwa, Kitamura-san! T-thank you for letting me hang out with you today. Please pardon the intrusion," Mashiro replied, a little nervous as she bowed in return before carefully walking into Kyoko's room. The dimly-lit room was a bit of a surprise, though she had seen a setup before from a workaholic cousin. Of course, Kyoko was as modest, or perhaps more so, as the time Mashiro had first met her in the park, but in Mashiro's eyes her room was more or less in a tidy state. "Ah, I've had a lot of school work recently, and any longer and I would be seeing music notes even as I closed my eyes. Thankfully it is all done now, and I can relax a bit. And Kitamura-san keeps her room rather neat, or at least far neater than myself." Mashiro looked for a place to set down the box and decided the little space that Kyoko had cleared would do. As she unpacked the box, placing the various snacks along the table and starting to set up the water heater, Mashiro noticed the piles of sketches at the end of the desk. "Ah, Kitamura-san was busy? I hope I am not interrupting," A nervous smile spread across Mashiro's face as she turned on the water heater. "Ah...well...would you like a green tea or a black tea?" Mashiro had plenty of manners. It was nice to know the girl could probably survive a visit at Kyoko's family home, though she likely would never end up going there. It was better she didn't for her own sake, Mashiro didn't need that stress. Kyoko went to her desk and bunched the papers there into a pile, left them for a moment, then picked up the pile and dropped them into the waste bucket beside the desk. Nothing good there anyway. She turned and joined Mashiro at the little table, sitting on the opposite side.
"Oh, thank you." Kyoko replied to the compliment of the rooms tidiness, "I do my best, but I am never sure if it is enough." she added. Mostly it was due to her home life. Everything had to be perfect or she'd be lectured and made to feel inadequate. 'How was she suppose to be a good wife if she couldn't keep a perfectly tidy home?' her father would say. Thus, she was always trying to keep everything neat. At this point it had become habit and even when she wasn't at home she was still acting that way. Couldn't be helped, she guessed.
"At least your music is going well, that is good to hear." Kyoko said. Mashiro was a very talented pianist. Kyoko would certainly love to hear more of what she had worked on, "Oh, you did not interrupt anything important. I was trying to come up with a painting, but nothing was coming to me. I could use the break, so your timing was perfect." she said with a smile. The tea offer was made and Kyoko thought a moment.
"Green, please." she said. That sounded better to her at the moment, "So, have you written a bunch of new songs then?" she asked the girl. Kyoko sat with a perfectly straight back, prim and proper as always, her hands resting gently in her lap as she allowed Mashiro to do her work and provide her answer in her own time. Kyoko felt she was a poor host as Mashiro was her guest but was providing the tea and snacks and doing the work. Kyoko allowed the girl to continue without a word, not wishing to sound rude or ungrateful, but she made a mental note to return the favor at some point.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. And so green tea it would be. Both of the teas that Mashiro had brought with her were ones she liked, so either choice would have been the right one. Slender white fingers worked swiftly to set up the tea pot, completely oblivious to Kyoko's inner turmoil, letting the hot water cool to the proper temperature first before starting to steep the leaves. Mashiro didn't mind at all that she was doing all the work at the moment. Having someone to hang out with was more important, someone who wasn't close family or another family friend. And in Fukui, the number of people who Mashiro could call a friend fit easily on a single hand. "Ah, I've written far too much that I think my hand might end up writing notes instead of kanji at this point," Mashiro replied with a soft and airy laugh, her back still turned to Kyoko as she removed the tea leaves and started pouring the tea into cups. "Ah, a lot of what score I wrote ended up I throw out. Not that it was bad, but, it just lead to nowhere. Ideas that were interesting at the time, but ended up being either a rehash of past works or things that were not very..." A frustrated frown spread across Mashiro's face as she turned around with the tea tray in hand. "Well, it just didn't end up working out in the end. Such is the nature of art, as my sister tells me, I suppose. Here you are, Kitamura-san. Please enjoy." The frown quickly turned into a bright smile as Mashiro handed Kyoko her cup, but it faded back to her usual neutral worried expression as the musician turned around to load up the tray with snacks. One of each type was transferred to the tray before the tray was brought over to Kyoko. "Ah, that said, I think we're both rather worn out from talking about work, aren't we?" Mashiro took a seat near Kyoko and sipped from her cup of tea. "So, beyond school, what has Kitamura-san been up to?" MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

"I would actually like to see that." Kyoko said, as she chuckled at Mashiro's joke about writing notes instead of kanji. Imagine speaking an entire language with musical notes! Wouldn't that be something? The girl then explained her process, which to Kyoko sounded much like her own. Sketching a bunch of ideas that just never really pan out. Her waste bin was full of that right now. Nothing that popped out at her, that screamed 'I need to be painted, I'll look amazing!'. It really was rather frustrating. And being frustrated didn't help with creativity. All one big ball of hindrance that just got bigger and bigger the more you went on. Maybe she should paint that. The ball of hindrance, blocking a bunch of artists from reaching their potential masterpieces. Amusing, but not really what she was looking for. She might add the concept to her notebook though...
"Thank you." Kyoko said as she accepted her tea with a slight bowing of the head. She took a sip and let the flavor fill her mouth, "Very well prepared, Satou-san." Kyoko said with a smile. The girl mentioned her sister, the twin she had mentioned when they had first met perhaps? She had said her family was large and cobbled together, so maybe there were other sisters. Kyoko didn't know. Mashiro's family seemed very close and more what Kyoko would imagine a family would look like. Her own was more about rules then about connections, about tradition than about relationships. How easily would her father disown her if he didn't approve of something about her? It was a scary thought. The snacks were handed out next and Kyoko returned the smile as she accepted the tray from Mashiro.
"Itadakimasu." Kyoko said. Mashiro had brought quite the variety with her too. Just the rice the rice crackers as something to snack on would have been more than acceptable and yet she also brought several other items. Letting her sweet tooth take over, she tried the chocolate first, "Mmm, that is delicious." Kyoko said. Mashiro then brought up a good point about them both being tired of talking about work. Too true. Kyoko should have realized Mashiro coming over was as much about getting away from music as she wanted to get away from painting. A break for the both of them. Then the other girl asked her about things outside of school.
"Erm..." Kyoko said, not really sure how to answer, "Well, I do my daily jogging, but not much else. I guess I have put a little too much time into trying to come up with a new painting." she admitted. She hadn't even met anyone else besides Mashiro. Her roommate too, but she hadn't really talked to her beyond the initial greeting. She met a senpai once while in the art room for practice, but that was about it.
"What about you, Satou-san?" she asked.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Compliments over the tea and an eager consumption of the chocolate made by her brother put Mashiro at ease, and a thin smile returned to the pianists face. The chocolate was a surefire win, it was one of the things her family's shop was best at, but tea was something that Mashiro's confidence had been a little shaky on. Hearing that Kyoko seemed to be stymied in terms of creativity worried Mashiro a bit, though she did not show it in her expression as she took a few strawberry chews for herself. The pianist wasn't sure if Kyoko had other hobbies beyond jogging, but Mashiro thought it would be a good idea to suggest a few things, though answering the question that was reflected back took the musician's attention first. "Well, I don't know if I can call myself busy. Whenever I'm lacking inspiration, I end up heading to the park or a really nice cafe my cousin told me about, or just trying to catch my family on Skype. That said...even going outside can get stale and right now no one is chatting in the family chat room." Mashiro laughed a little nervously. She didn't want to make Kyoko think the painter was a sort of last resort for social interaction. "Ah, that said, last weekend, the two cousins that are also students here and I went home to Tokyo, though Yumeko-chan stayed with Auntie Haru. It was just a short weekend visit, but it was good to see most of everyone there. I did get to meet Yuki-nee's girlfriend for the first time, too." Mashiro decided to take a sip of tea and refill Kyoko's tea cup before returning to the topic that Mashiro had earlier in mind. "Ah, if Kitamura-san is feeling like she's lacking a bit of muse, maybe Kitamura-san could join me or maybe even my cousins whenever we go wander about in town. I think Misha-nee would get along with you well, you both have that very prim and proper and refined feel to both of you." MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Mashiro had some interesting methods of regaining her inspiration. A cafe, maybe, but talking to her family? That was an odd sounding one to Kyoko. Her family was more the cause of her lack of inspiration, though she wouldn't admit it. She blamed herself instead, feeling there was something wrong with her that was the real issue. Her father was just trying to do what was best for her and he was older and more experienced, so surely he knew what he was talking about. So why did it bother Kyoko so much? There had to be some other reason. Some other cause within herself. And her art wasn't the only thing off about her. There were other aspects of herself that didn't fit. Her bother told her that her that Takahiro-san, her future betrothed, was a very good looking boy. Kyoko didn't see it. She supposed he was, but he just looked like some guy to her. On the other hand, she far more vividly remembered how beautiful her old classmate Mariko was. That was certainly something she didn't feel she could share with her mother. What would she think?
Then Mashiro continued on with her story about her cousins, who apparently go to this same school, and herself visiting home. And she mentioned "Yuki-nee's girlfriend". Kyoko almost spit out the tea she was sipping. Her mind raced. Yuki-nee, that sounded like a sister. Her sister had a girlfriend!? Was that even a thing!? To sheltered Kyoko, it was not. She had heard of such things before, but never from someone who had seen it as far as she knew. It was the kind of thing her parents considered wrong and not something they would even think of exposing her too. Kyoko put her tea cup down gently and acted as casually as she could as Mashiro continued on with an offer of visiting town with Mashiro and her cousins.
"That could be fun." Kyoko said. She didn't know many people here so meeting a few more would be nice. She had said her cousins were at school, but she had also used the '-nee' honorific to describe one of them. So she used that for cousins? Was Yuki a cousin or a sister? Did it matter at this point, because that was not what Kyoko had her focus on. However, she also didn't think it overly polite to ask outright about it either. Yes, it would be impolite. That was why she was trying to be subtle about it.
"Erm... Is Yuki-san the other cousin? Or someone else?" Kyoko asked as innocently as she could. Her face was starting to go a bit red.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. The strawberry gummy candy, one that was from the nearby candy store Mashiro had grown fond of, was the pianist's current victim as Kyoko asked about Yuki. At first, Mashiro had a look of confusion on her face as she tried to processing the question, but once she understood she swallowed the gummy candy and shook her head with a smile. "Ah, sorry to confuse you, Kitamura-san. Yuki-nee is one of my cousins, yes, but not one of the two that attend Fukui with me. That would be Misha-nee who is in the culinary arts department and Yumeko-chan in the writing department. Though Yumeko-chan is a second cousin to me, she's a first cousin to Yuki-nee," Mashiro explained, a little embarrassed over causing confusion and twirling the extra long lock of hair on the right side of her head. "Like I said before, my end of the family is a little cobbled together. My mom and her two remaining sisters live nearby, so me and my cousins and siblings would often hang out together. In a way, our use of honorifics between each one of us has been rather jumbled up. There's Yuko-nee, Yuki-nee, but Yuka-chan, even through there all triplets. And then Chiri-nee and I use '-nee' for each other, even though we aren't sure which one of us is older despite being biological sisters." Mashiro laughed nervously. The 'Kitamura branch family', as her mother and aunt called it, was not meant to be a secret, but it was somehow embarrassing for Mashiro to talk about it. She loved her family, and she took pride in who they were and were grateful for every bit they did for her. Slowly, the pianist calmed down and smiled, but the smile was short-lived. A-ah! Sorry if that doesn't make so much sense!" Mashiro said, twirling her hair with increased intensity as she tried to think of something else to say, finally blurting out, "Ah, anyways, er...Kitamura-san has a big family too?" Kyoko nodded along slowly as Mashiro told her how all the names she mentioned were connected. So Yuki was also a second cousin? Yumeko was a second cousin, the daughter of one of Mashiro's parent's cousins. If Yuki was a first cousin of Yumeko, then she was the daughter of Mashiro's parent's cousin's sibling, also Mashiro's parents cousin. Thus a second cousin to Mashiro. Unless Kyoko was missing something completely. Ah, well, it was all kind of beside the point anyway. Kyoko had been asking for clarity on the other point about Yuki. So Yuki was a girl with a girlfriend. That was... The concept was wrong, disgraceful, and.... intriguing. Kyoko couldn't help the odd fluttery feeling in her chest upon thinking about it. Part of her wanted to start bombarding Mashiro with questions about the whole thing. She wanted to know every detail. She was so curious... and jealous. Kyoko tried to suppress the feelings and ignore them. Luckily, Mashiro continued on with her explanation and Kyoko managed to hold her tongue.
The girl further explained about how her family's honorifics were a little unusual. That was what caused Kyoko's confusion. She was used to using only proper honorifics for a person. To not do so was a great insult to her family. Was that why Mashiro seemed so close to her cousins? Her family was all over the place it seemed, yet still kind of close. Kyoko could be in the same room with her cousins and feel miles away. They were all kind of the same. So formal and acting around etiquette, it was more like a dance than a family gathering. And beware if you miss a step. Mashiro inquired about her own family next, but she had no stories to tell that would be over interesting.
"Um, yes I do. I don't see them all that often though." Kyoko replied with an embarrassed smile. She wondered if that would be as strange to Mashiro as Kyoko found her family. Kyoko didn't like talking about her family either, and quickly attempted to redirect the conversation, "It's nice that you're so close with yours though. Do you have plenty of social events and see them all for holidays and all that kind of thing?" she asked.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. With curious red eyes, Mashiro watched Kyoko's reaction, but was having a hard time parsing anything meaningful. Was it confusion, was it shock? The pianist lamented that she was never able to acheive that almost psychic empathy that her twin had managed to acheive. The only thing that Mashiro did seem to be able to parse was that embarrassed smile Kyoko had when she admitted that she didn't get to see her family often enough. There was a wide variety of reasons that came to the muscian's mind. By the way Kyoko spoke, Mashiro assumed that her family, or at least most of it, was still alive, meaning it wasn't like Hikari, Sierra, or Tanya who lost their families to tragedy. Was it like Cyrus, who just was far away phsyically? Was it like Misha, who had to hide her old family out of safety? Was it like Yukari, whose parents were so busy at work? Was it like Ageha, whose parents were in jail? Was it like Mashiro herself, who was erased from her father's side of the family? Mashiro's smile still remained on her face, but her red eyes seemed to cloud up with sadness for only a moment when Kyoko asked her question. "Ah, yes we do a lot of things together!" Mashiro replied, cheer returning to her crimson eyes. "So, for the usual festivals, like Tanabata, we head back to Tokyo. And even just on the weekends, we take a train up to Kanazawa, then the Hokuriku Shinkansen back to Tokyo. It's only a two-and-a-half hour trip on the Kagayaki train, though, you do need to reserve a ticket for it. But it's really worth it just to be around them again. And we also get to visit some of my old friends from middle school too." Mashiro clearly had very fond memories of home, smiling as she took another sip from her tea before continuing. "Ah, and when it's Christmas, we try to get everyone together. Well, when we say everyone, it's the families of the four Kitamura sisters, that being my mom, her two surviving sisters, and Cyrus-nii and his family representing Auntie Aki's side. Usually it's at Auntie Fuyu's place, since my house and Auntie Haru's house is a little small, since it's the living space above our respective shops, and then Cyrus is all the way in America too," Mashiro explained. Notably, her pronunciation of 'Cyrus' and 'America' was different, speaking in almost perfect English. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Mashiro excitedly began talking about her holiday events, and Kyoko was more than happy to listen to them. She smiled, and nodded along at the different travel locations. She tried one of the chews that Mashiro had eaten earlier and found it to be tasty. Honestly, she'd never had a candy like that before. Her family tended to stick to a very regal and posh menu. Candies were not on the shopping list. Though she did get desserts, and delicious ones at that, so she didn't complain. Mashiro's holiday stories seemed like it involved a lot of complicated schedule workings. Imagine trying to get so many people together for one event! Kyoko's family visited other family members too, but it was more one at a time and there was nothing particularly interesting about the visits. Kyoko was having more fun talking to Mashiro here than she ever did at those get togethers. Then she dropped a rather foreign sounding name and Kyoko blinked at it.
"Sai-roos." Kyoko shook her head, "What an odd name." she said with a good-natured chuckle. She had never met someone from America herself, though her father had many times through his work, she knew. She most definitely didn't have any family members there that she knew of.
"Tell me, what is Christmas like when your family gets together, Satou-san?" Kyoko asked curiously. Mashiro's family seemed so different from her own. She wanted to know more about what they did together. It all sounded so fun!

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Mashiro giggled softly as Kyoko tried to pronounce her cousin's name. "Ah, yes! Cyrus-nii's father is Russian. His mom, Auntie Aki, traveled the world. Auntie Haru said that on her 18th birthday, Auntie Aki had to sneak out of the Kitamura house so she could travel. She ended up in America...where she passed away." A soft sigh passed through Mashiro's lips. She never got to meet Aki or Ivan, since they passed away shortly after Mashiro was born. But the pianist shook her head and smiled again. "Ah, right. Christmas! Well, the food is really good! At least all the candies and the cake is, since that's what mom and Auntie Haru do for a living with our family's shops." Mashrio seemed to be beaming with pride at her family's culinary skills. "Ah, so, we get together at Auntie Fuyu's house, and...basically have dinner together...though it's more like a giant buffet and we eat wherever there's space." A nervous 'ehe' escaped from Mashrio as she started to twirl her extra-long right-side bangs again. "Then we have the gift exchange! Usually we know what each other is giving. It makes things so much easier than guessing. Though...Cyrus-nii and his family have to mail the gifts first, and we have to mail our gifts back too, but...I think it's worth it." "Ah...Then after the gift exchange we just..." Mashiro trailed off, frowning as she tried her best to remember. "Ah...we just hang out and chat. We're all in different schools now, so we don't get to chat as much. So we make the best we can out of that. Then we go home, we're not too far. Though in the past, all the kids will just sleep over." MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Mashiro spoke more of Cyrus and his parentage. Once again there was a story of escaping the Kitamura family, this one ending sadly with the eventual death of the Aki Kitamura. Once again the connection Mashiro had with this Kitamura family came up, and once again Kyoko found herself wondering. Every time it was mentioned, it was about how her family had gotten away from it, ran away to do something or another. Kyoko had never heard of any of these people, but her family wouldn't have talked about them to her. They wouldn't talk about them at all. Even poor Aki, who's ultimate fate would have earned only a 'it's her own fault' from her family if it was them. Kyoko was getting a little uncomfortable with the connection. It all just seemed to fit her family so well.
Could it actually be her family? Were Kyoko and Mashiro really related through a distant connection? Kyoko couldn't even begin to imagine how distant. And if it were true, how did these people just leave like that? How did they abandon their family and dishonor them? What could have possibly lead them to a choice like that? It was disgraceful really. Kyoko had her issues, but she was still a child, if she was being honest. What did she really know about the world and how things worked. Her father was looking out for her, he wanted what was best for her. If he said Takahiro-sama was going to take care of her, then what right did she have to argue? He had to be right, he was older, wiser, and her father. Her mother agreed to. How could she logically challenge the things they told her when she didn't know anything herself? She shouldn't even have connected Mashiro's Kitamura family members to her own. That was an insult to her family in and of itself. There was no real evidence for that conclusion. She had to believe her family was in the right.
She had to.
Mashiro thankfully answered Kyoko's question about Christmas, allowing Kyoko to shift her focus to happier subject matter. Kyoko listened intently, taking in the details and trying to picture it all in her mind. It seemed like a fantasy world. Like something you would read in a Christmas book. There was just something so... intimate about it all. It was difficult to describe. Some close connection that spoke of the bonds between them. Not so much in the words, but something in Mashiro's voice implying levels of emotion Kyoko had never experienced before. Her own holiday celebrations felt all the more... sterile for hearing it. Like something was missing. Something Kyoko couldn't put her finger on.
"It all sounds wonderful." Kyoko admitted, "Are all holidays like this with your family?" she asked.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Mashiro twirled her hair at such a furious pace it could have created a breeze. "Ah...hm...I'd say so. In the way that so much of it so...I don't want to say it's a mess, but...maybe spontaneous?" A nervous laugh escaped Mashiro's lips. "Ah, Auntie Fuyu likes to plan everything, and we have to, even with just three families, there's... ah, 8 children? And then Mom and Auntie Haru always like to do things their way too. Yet somehow in sync. But I suppose, with just three families, three sisters, to coordinate with, it must be much easier?" A look of pondering took over Mashiro's face, as she thought about it a little longer. Then, a feeling of realization it hit the pianist. That looming question that was at the back of her mind. The entire time, the composer was picking up unconciously by the way Kyoko was acting, but wasn't able to connect the dots until now. "Ah...is Kitamura-san's family very different?" Mashiro asked, tacking on. "Ah! I-I mean, your Kitamura family?" Mashiro's voice was a bit shakey and stuttery. A slight blush, one easily seen on her pale skin, quickly streaked across her face as she put her hands up in front of her, "A-ah! Sorry... Ah...I asked since...well, I never found my family strange, even though a lot of us were brought in, like me. I guess I say that because I grew up with them. I think I s-said that before, sorry..." There was a soft, frustrated and embarrassed groan that Mashiro tried to hide behind the chewing of a strawberry fruit snack. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

It all sounded so chaotic, and yet it all seemed to work out in the end. The concept was so foreign to Kyoko, her family was quite the opposite. It was almost like fiction to try and picture it. But even as a fantasy, she could still imagine it clearly in her mind. The chatting, the laughing, the relaxed atmosphere. Kyoko was never relaxed at home, even during a holiday celebration. Actually, those could be more stressful as her father demanded perfection when hosting. In those times Kyoko was more a waitress than a member of the family. And if she slipped up she knew she wouldn't hear the end of it from her father. Mashiro more or less returned the question. Kyoko smiled as she stumbled over the name coincidence. She knew what the other girl had meant though.
"Um, my father is head of the family, so he makes the schedules and plans. We follow those, so it doesn't get too chaotic for us." she said with a smile, making it sound all matter-of-fact, that he was just the lead taker and not like he was some kind of dictator. Kyoko then realized what else Mashiro had said and took the cue to push the subject off of her own family again. She remembered Mashiro mentioning her family was cobbled together, but must have missed it if she said she was one of the ones brought in.
"You did mention something, as I recall. So, you are adopted?" she asked as lightly as she could, not really sure of how Mashiro felt about the subject. She was the one who brought it up though, so Kyoko felt she could ask about it, but still - you never knew. Sometimes people wanted others to know, but not to talk about it.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Mashiro couldn't help but chuckle as Kyoko said that her family was far less chaotic, starting to relax again. Perhaps it was just because things were smaller, or that the people involved were far less inclined to try and do things their own way. Or maybe her father was a really good taskmaster, able to manuever and work around anything that'd pop up. It wasn't as if Mashiro's family didn't try to follow plans...it's that the plans changed. But the subject moved back to Mashiro's family, or more specifically, Mashiro herself. "Ah? Yes, I'm one of the adopted ones. I'm still blood-related, though, if that makes sense?" Mashiro tilted her head slightly as as responded. Her voice was almost as if she was restating what was supposed to be a well-known fact, even though outside of her family, very few friends knew the full scope of her situation. "Ah, as mom's story goes, she was wandering around the forest as dad was attending to some other business when she found me and Chiri, just...hidden beneath a tree." By how relaxed Mashiro was, it was rather clear that the pianist had little shame in her story. With a slight smile, she poured some more tea for herself and topped off Kyoko's cup as well. She took another sip of tea before continuing. "Ah, as mom found out, my uncle...sorry, my biological father...ended up ordering some of the maids to hide us in the forest. Being part of a prominent family, it was just too much of a shame to give birth to...well." The musician shrugged, having a hard time explaining. "Ah, well, the best way to put is that, Chiri and I had the utmost pleasure of being able to meet him once." Though rare, Mashiro's voice was incredibly sarcastic, though it seemed like she was having fun. "All he said was 'get these freaks away from me'" MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Kyoko listened to Mashiro's story and while the girl seemed to have gotten over things by now, hearing it for the first time was horrible to Kyoko's ears. How could someone act like that toward their own children? There was nothing wrong with Mashiro either, she just looked a bit different. Nothing wrong with that. And blood relation? Did that mean they were talking about this Kitamura family again? The subject was starting to make Kyoko feel uncomfortable. She didn't want to think about it anymore, about the possibility it was a member of her family that acted that way. She blocked that train of thought from pushing forward.
"That's horrible, but it sounds like you are better off now." Kyoko said, "Growing up with people who care about you, who nurtured you, and now you're here writing music. When did you decide that was what you wanted to do?" she asked with a smile. She shifted subjects with a delicate grace, not rushing her words and keeping her tones sad, and then happy. Natural sounding, but moving on to something else - perhaps because it was a dark subject and she didn't want to make Mashiro uncomfortable when really it was her own feelings she was trying to protect. Mashiro seemed passed it, after all. It was Kyoko who wanted to dodge the subject.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. A bright smile lit up on Mashiro's face as Kyoko handily changed the subject. Usually she would be the one asking that question, so this turnabout was rather refreshing and the muscian was more than happy to talk about music. However, she now was completely oblivious to the storm in a teacup in front of her. "Ah, well, it started a bit as something that I would do when my brother Miki wasn't around?" Slender white fingers tapped Mashiro's chin as she tried to recall some distant memories, then held up a lock of her ghostly white hair for Kyoko. "Ah, maybe I should start with this. Elementary school kids are not...the most mature, not that we are pinnacles of maturity either, but...well. I didn't exactly get along with my classmates, so I listened to music to comfort me when I was alone." Forgetting where she was, the pianist looked around for her piano until she remembered she was in Kyoko's room, sighing and shaking her head in embarrassment. "Ah, well...from there...my brother Miki tried to cheer me up by showing me a lot of music, though admittedly a lot of it came from my cousin Yuki. There was one song in particular that did catch my attention." She held her hands out in front of her as if it was resting on the keys of a piano. "It started with a slow and somber piano melody, then got more jovial as a violin joined it with a counter-melody." Mashiro started, her fingers moving as if she was playing the song itself. "Then as they sped up...a drum set, like the one you hear in a pop music band, provided constrasting beat...and it was that mix of...old and new that surprised me." Mashiro put her hands down, then moved it to her teacup. "Well...I wanted to hear more and more until...I felt like I should make more." There was a tired smile on the musician's face. "Anyways...I recall that Kitamura-san just...somehow found her skills too?" MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Thankfully, Mashiro easily followed along with the change of subject which let Kyoko start relaxing again. Her attention turned completely to Mashiro as she told the story of her musical origins, Kyoko's own mind pushing the dark thoughts away and ignoring them in favor of the lighter subject. It was very clear that Mashiro had a passion for playing music, so much so that her hands instinctively moved to play the notes as she thought them. Kyoko could picture Mashiro's mind and heart being filled with the song as her fingers twitched to the notes. Not being musically inclined herself, Kyoko couldn't picture the music as described too well. But she smiled all the same at Mashiro's own passion for the music and how her love for it was written on her face.
"Yes, though my story is far more boring, I'm afraid." Kyoko replied, "Just some well received art class projects. I do have fun painting, but that's about the extent of the story." she said with an apologetic smile. She didn't have an intense life story like Mashiro did. Born different and being subjected to persecution by the other kids only to have that lead to a love of music. Almost like destiny. Mashiro was the kind of person who had books written about them later in life because of all the struggles she went through. A book about Kyoko would be rather boring, she felt. Normal girl from a rich family that painted a few good pictures in class. Not very interesting. Not to mention her future was rather boring too, where Mashiro would probably go on to play concerts and such. Kyoko hoped she'd get to attend a Mashiro concert one day. That would probably be fun.
"Are you working on anything special at the moment?" Kyoko asked, intrigued to learn more about Mashiro's musical progress. She recalled the playing in the park when she had met Mashiro for the first time and was keen for more, even if it was just talking about it.
