“ Without music, life would be a mistake. The notion of someone's life as being boring caused Mashiro to frown reflexively and tilt her head in worry. Hundreds and thousands of patrons passed through the Satou family store, where the pianist even through only a few short years still got to hear stories of people she thought was ordinary, and never did she find it boring. This wasn't the first time Kyoko had dismissed herself, and now Mashiro was starting to get more visibly worried. There was modesty, and then there was needless self-deprecation. After all, Kyoko made it to Fukui Academy. The pianist threw in her entire portfolio; Bandcamp site, NicoNico account, and binders upon binders of written sheet music. So Kyoko had to have something, right? Now that Mashiro thought of it, Kyoko never spoke much about herself and her family. Mashiro's head to the other side as she pondered an answer to the newest question given to her. "Ah...beyond assignments, there isn't anything I am working on in particular," Mashiro admitted, going back to her neutral expression of a frown. "Sometimes melodies come and go in my mind and I do try to write it down and perhaps refine it, but...I'm afraid there isn't much of a project to speak of. That said, I can go get my keyboard if you want me to play something?" Suddenly, an idea came to Mashiro's mind and she clapped her hands together in excitement. "Ah! I have an idea! I think I wanted to see Kitamura-san's paintings last time we met too. So! If I go get my keyboard, can Kitamura-san bring out one of her paintings?" It was a request of innocent curiosity, and it showed in how Mashiro's crimson eyes seemed to geam in anticipation. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Mashiro admitted she wasn't working on anything beyond school projects at the moment. Kyoko understood that. School was the priority at the moment and any inspiration you might have you would want to direct at your grades. Writing completely for herself could come later anyway, once she graduated. Kyoko was sure the quality wasn't any less for it though. And the random melodies that popped into her head would likely become become beautiful songs one day. Music certainly was a fantastic way to move people. Paintings tended to get over analyzed and critiqued more then someone simply enjoying it. At least, that was Kyoko's experience. Mashiro then offered to play a song and Kyoko was about to happily agree when Mashiro upped the stakes and made it a trade. A song for a painting.
"Um... I-I suppose we could do that..." Kyoko said hesitantly. Her face reddened and her eyes darted to her closet where she kept some of her previous work. It was a fair enough trade and Kyoko did want to hear more of Mashiro's music, but showing off her own work? That always made her nervous.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. "Ah...?" Mashiro smiled brightly and her crimson eyes seemed to gleam with excitement. "Ah, very well then! Please excuse me then, I shall be back soon!" At first, Mashiro carefully put aside her cup of tea, then started to walk quickly to the door with a rather obvious spring in her step. Once she made it to the hallway, the pale girl broke into a sprint, even though she was only a few doors down from her room. Not wishing to waste Kyoko's time, the musician decided to forego the carrying case, carrying just her instrument under one shoulder and the stand beneath the other. Mashiro was running on excitement and adrenaline, hefting the instrument three-fourths her size in an unweildy manner as she ran back to Kyoko's room. "Ah, sorry for taking so long, Kitamura-san!" Mashiro said, breathing a little faster than normal as she squeezed through the doorway, looking side to side for an area open enough for her to place her keyboard. In the rush to get things set up, she had forgotten, at least for the moment, that she also wanted to see Kyoko's paintings. "Ah...ah...here...?" Hastily, Mashiro unfolded the stand and set down her instrument, turning it on and running her fingers across the keys, producing a soft glissando to confirm that it was ready. Mashiro seemed excited by the idea and rushed off to get her stuff. Kyoko stared at the doorway a moment, before her eyes drifted to her closet. She sighed and headed over to the small storage. She opened the door and peered in at the paintings there. Looking them over, Kyoko wasn't particularly happy with any of it. Was she ever? But she hadn't really found her way of doing things yet, her own style, and everything just looked amateur to her. It didn't matter how well she painted the picture. Technique wasn't everything. Looking them over, she couldn't really decide and it wasn't long before Mashiro returned with her things. The girl apologized for taking so long.
She should apologize for not taking longer... Kyoko thought in a panic. Though the girl seemed to be so excited to play that she didn't even ask about the painting, just went about prepping the piano. Kyoko smiled. Mashiro was really into the piano, wasn't she. That was nice to see. Kyoko shifted from the closet and closed the door subtly, trying to prolong dealing with showing off a painting.
"What will you play?" Kyoko asked. She was certainly excited to hear what Mashiro had been working on.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. "Ah...that's a good question." Mashiro said, almost giggling as she pulled the chair she was sitting on earlier up to the keyboard. "Ah...let's see...we had an assignment regarding the subject of 'cross rythms'...so I can play a few compositions I did for that asignment. Ah...so..." The pianist took her seat and closed her eyes. Pale fingers rested at the keyboard, touching the keys with the lightest of touches. It took another moment of silence before Mashiro had made up her mind, whispering, "Ah...how about..." From the ready position, the musician's hands pressed into the keys, kicking off what was at first a singular melody in a minor key. Slow, somber, and full of emotion, in contrast the the almost trance-like and sleepy expression on Mashiro's face. As the song went on, the melody seemed to split into two. In the left hand was sorrow, it's tempo slow, as if it was dragging its feet. In the right hand was melancholy, its rythm faster, as if walking at a worried pace. Two songs in one, playing off each other until one last crescendo, pettering out weakly as its coda. Songs that like seemed to come naturally to Mashiro, and she was faintly aware of that little habit. Still, she swiveled around in her chair to face Kyoko again, smiling proudly. For now, she had forgotten about Kyoko's painting and was content to be playing music for a friend, even if they haven't chatted so much before. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Kyoko happily took a seat as Mashiro set up to play. She felt as excited about it as Mashiro looked, remembering the lovely tune she had spun when they had met. Kyoko waited quietly as Mashiro went through her process of deciding which song to play. It took a bit and Kyoko wondered if the girl was going through the same panic she had when looking for a painting to show, just internally. She seemed pretty calm though, so perhaps she had a bit more confidence than Kyoko in her work. Eventually she made her choice and her fingers began to dance across the ivories, the melody springing to life. Kyoko didn't know enough about music to truly appreciate the complexity of the piece, but she did know it was beautiful. She closed her eyes and just listened to the song with a small smile on her face. When Mashiro was finished, Kyoko clapped.
"That was wonderful, Satou-san" Kyoko said, "It's amazing; the pieces you put together. You have so much talent." she added. Kyoko was almost jealous really. She had recieved some praise for her work before coming here, but once she arrived at this school she realized just what true talent really was. So many amazing artists like Mashiro went to this school. Kyoko didn't really feel like she belonged. Not that it mattered in the end anyway, given her future. She did enjoy the fact she got to experience the work of these future professionals though. Years from now, she might be sitting in audience of a concert watching Mashiro play on stage. And she could tell people 'I went to school with her'. That would be fun.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. "Ah...thank you, Kitamura-san..." Mashiro replied, her already whispery voice starting to trail off. Kyoko's praise and clapping made Mashiro feel surprisingly nervous. In the park, with nameless strangers for an audience, Mashiro was rather comfortable. Perhaps it was because regardless of what opinions they held, Mashiro knew she was unlikely to see them every again. As the pianist reached up to tug on the extra-long lock of white hair that ran down her right arm, she realized what was bothering her. It was just one word that Kyoko had said, one word that struck a cord: talent. Mashiro tried to keep smiling, but the smile was easily crumbling as she remembered the lunch she had with her cousin Yuki the week before she moved to Fukui, and the reassurances that Yuki tried to give her. That no matter what her biological father did to try and birth the 'perfect' daughter, his efforts wouldn't have made a musician. In the end, Mashiro's aptitute for music was due to her and her alone. Yet, the doubts, however tiny, still lingered in the back of the albino girl's mind. Crimson red eyes started to flit about in increasing panic until she looked directly into Kyoko's eyes, remembering the idea that had come up before Mashiro ran off to set up the piano. "Ah...! Well. Kitamura-san has to be really talented too, right? I mean, you wouldn't be attending Fukui otherwise," Mashiro said. She tilted her head slightly but the grip on her hair relaxed a bit. "Ah, so...can Kitamura-san show me some of her paintings too?" Mashiro phrased it as a question, remembering Kyoko's earlier hesitation. The painting themselves were likely pretty good, Mashiro reasoned, and it was only Kyoko, who like any other artist, would downplay their own skills. Still, Mashiro was loathe to give any sort of pressure. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

After Kyoko's words, Mashiro seemed to become sadder. Kyoko paused and stared a moment, wondering if she had said something wrong. She didn't know what within her words could be taken negatively though, so she was left confused by the other girl's reaction. She seemed suddenly down and then an increasing panic.
"Um-" started Kyoko, about to ask if something was wrong, but she was cut off by Mashiro suddenly changing the subject. Right back on to their earlier deal. Now it was Kyoko's turn to become a bit more panicked, "Erm, I-I don't know about that, but... well... I did say I'd show something... um, one second." Kyoko said, heading back off into her room and closet to grab a painting. She still hadn't decided which though. She flicked through what was there, and none of it was particularly good. Then she got to her even older work. She had brought a few pieces she had painted prior to being accepted, some were even part of her application for the school. She picked one up and stared at it a moment. She felt a bit awkward showing it off, people always started asking questions about it. Questions that were hard to answer. She had only painted it on a whim, after all. Oh well, it was one of the few pieces she had on hand that she didn't hate. If she was going to show something off, it might as well be that. With a sigh, she closed her closet and headed back to the other room and Mashiro. She held the painting toward herself and was turning red in the face as she returned.
"Erm, well... here it is... um, it's a bit older, but it's one of the pieces that got me here. So, um... yeah." she introduced awkwardly. Then she just gathered her nerves and flipped the painting around. It was a watercolour painting of a vibrant pink lisianthus flower. At first glance it might just seem like a normal painting of a flower, but within the center of it's petals there was a keyhole. Kyoko didn't say anything, but just nervously held it up while looking off to the side as she awaited judgement and questioning.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. A cheerful hum escaped the pianist's lips as Kyoko set off to look for a painting to show off. Paintings were something Mashiro never saw much of nor did she understand what would make a painting 'good', but she was aware that painting, like any other art, still required a good amount of effort to really get 'right'. So more than anything else, Mashiro was more keen to see what kind of efforts Kyoko had put into her painting. "Ah...uwah...!" Crimson eyes went wide in awe as she looked upon the watercolour lisianthus, then narrowed slightly as Mashiro took it all in. Slowly, she swayed side to side in focus, not unlike the way she did when she was playing the piano. On the surface, it was indeed a very striking impression of the flower, but the way the image seemed faded and blurred gave off a wistful tone for the painter. And the keyholes in the petals. Curiously, Mashiro tilted her head. What meaning would those have? Did they have meaning at all? A thin smile spread across Mashiro's lips as she pondered further. If nothing else, the mysterious feature made her think, and that alone was enjoyable. "Ah...for Kitamura-san...for that to be an old one...no wonder you got accepted!" Mashiro said in praise, tilting her head upright again. It was only now that the musician noticed how nervous Kyoko seemed to be. It was nostalgic - was this how Miki-nee and her parents felt the first time she had revealed all the music she wrote? Her family encouraged her art, so Mashiro felt now it was her turn to do the same. "Ah...well. It is good then that Kitamura-san is here then. I am sure that you have only gotten better since, right?" Mashiro said with a soft giggle. "Ah, I look back on some of my compositions, and I am a bit embarrassed at how...bad I was. But seeing that only reminded me...how far I've gotten." MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Kyoko just continued to stand there awkwardly as Mashiro looked over her work. After taking it in, the girl sang it's praises. And even better - she hadn't asked any questions about it. Kyoko relaxed a little more, though she was still nervous about it coming up at some point. Mashiro's praise included her theory that if that painting was an older one, then her newer paintings would be even better. Unfortunately it was quite the opposite.
"Um, I guess so." Kyoko agreed, simply wanting to deflect talking about her current disasters. Thankfully Mashiro dropped a different conversation thread that Kyoko was happy to latch on to.
"I'm sure they weren't that bad." she said with a chuckle, "But I suppose most people do get better over time, and it would be nice to look over your progress over the years." she added with a smile. Kyoko returned to her room to put the painting back and then rejoined Mashiro at the table. She wondered if music was different than painting in that regard, that you could just get better and better at it. Timing, rhythm, or whatever else. Kyoko could get better at brush control maybe, but that was never a real issue for her. It was inspiration and subjects that eluded her. On the other hand, Mashiro probably was just in a better mindset for art.
"One day you could have a 'life of Satou Mashiro concert' that plays all of your songs from youth to present and shows your progress over the years." Kyoko suggested with a grin. That would be pretty interesting to hear. Did musicians do that? It wasn't uncommon with visual art like painting to have comparisons like that. You could always see the progress and changes in the artist through their work like a time line when they were all displayed together. She didn't know if she'd ever heard of a musician doing something like that before though.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. The way Kyoko stood didn't escape Mashiro's attention. It reminded the white-haired girl of customers at the family shop who became nervous when asked about, well, anything. Mashiro was aware of her own very closed up and distant nature, but it was seemingly more apparent that she had finally encountered someone even more distant than her. So, how was she going to bridge the gap? Was bridging the gap even the right move? Crimson eyes followed Kyoko as she pulled the painting away and rejoined Mashiro at the table. The subject changed, but the pianist didn't seem to mind; rather her train of though followed and she rested her chin on her hand in thought. "Ah...a 'best of' album?" Mashiro said. She had her resting expression, which was a slight frown, even though she was not upset at all. "Ah...Well, definitely there is that, but once you're doing that, it's like you're admitting your career is over, isn't it? Or maybe it'd be some successor of mine performing it as a tribute?" Mashiro tilted her head side to side as she chucked, but her attention remained in own trains of thought. Her eyes were unfocused, yet still looked forward towards Kyoko as she spoke. "Ah...That's a long ways away I think. Though, I do think some circles do have a 'compilation' album of the past popular songs, plus a few remixes and then an original or two. But at that point, it may as well be just another full album right? Well, just throwing together old things feels like cheating, but...never easy to make something new all the time, right?" "Ah! Actually...! I'm a little curious!" The composer blinked as an idea struck her. Eagerly, she leaned forwards slightly as she looked right into Kyoko's eyes. "Ah...how does Kitamura-san start a painting? Not in the 'inspiration' way, but, but...like the actual paiting way? I mean...prepare a canvas or..sketch or...how do you handle the paints?"
