It'd taken some work, but they'd done it, though not with the game they expected. Sophie and Keke had both been expecting the tabletop group they found at Fukui to be playing something along the lines of Dungeons and Dragons, or Vampire the Masquerade. At least she was in the ballpark, considering the game was Princess the Hopeful, a fan game set in the World of Darkness. Considering what she heard of the game, while the characters were Nobles, they could easily have a knight motif. It was, all things considered, the perfect game for them. Particularly since the source book was legitimately free.
Of course, the first session was more explaining the setting and getting acquainted with the rules, and sending them home to work on their character sheets. Ordinary high school students swept up with grand new powers. Well, grand in the making. They were starting with 'Inner Light 1'. Which means they were noob magical girls.
So, Sophie had made her sheet. It had taken her a while to hammer out exactly what kind of girl she had - predictably, of course, a Champion. Because a knight was a fighter, among other things. Her sheet was done, barring critique, but she'd invited Kekepania over to talk about the upcoming campaign, and maybe get a sneak peak at her best friend's character sheet.
So, laying her sheet on the table, she sat in the nearby chair, waiting for her friend's arrival.

All things considered, Kekepania was pretty excited, possibly far too excited as she'd stayed up way too late making plans and hanging out inside her virtual world imagining all the adventures she was going to be going on as a sort of real magical princess. It was one thing to play as one in a game, not that there were nearly enough where you could go around kicking butt, but this was a game with other people where she could show off even more. Making the character was hard though and, the more she looked at them, the less satisfied she was with their power level.
Not to mention all the awesome charms that would be really cool to use and try out, and all the ones that her character should have to be a powerful princess who could really fight against darkness. No matter how she shuffled and pushed, she was always cutting things down, never adding as much as she wanted. It was frustrating. In a way, it was good that Sophie invited her to come by and compare notes. Maybe Sophie would be able to guide her to a way where she could load up even more charms onto her character. So, after all the classes and dinner had ended, the pair met up.
Kekepania set her things down and smiled at Sophie. "Hey, how's it going?" She asked, her eyes were a little red and there were rings underneath. "I think I might have gotten too obsessed. " she dug through her bag and pulled out several pages that made up her character sheet. It was smudged to hell with eraser marks as she'd changed her mind so many times without settling and left streaks all over. "I wish we had more dots for charms and stuff. There are just so many options." She laughed slightly embarrassed. It was like losing yourself in a candy store and ending up covered in chocolate. But less likely to make you sick afterwards. "I've made a Mender of Swords I think it is, what have you made?"

"Hey, your highness. It's going well. I swear, I didn't think it would take this long to make, not that I didn't enjoy it." It was an interesting fantasy bit.
Honestly, it'd taken her a fair bit to figure out stuff. Apparently, some charms had synergy with others, and according to the Dreams rule set - apparently, there were two version of the game, you could even skip around the board a bit and use invocations as a 'pseudo-tree' of sorts.
Still, she was using a digital sheet on her laptop; it made it easier to edit. "I made a Champion of Hearts myself." she told her, turning her laptop so the faux-royal could see for herself, if she wished. She may have also spent a bit of money on the core book and Hurt Locker so she would have access to Style Merits and not. Though she realized starting with a style merit might be a bit odd, given the setting, but the character stood up against bullies, even before she blossomed.
"She'd spent a lot of time fighting bullies even before, so she knew how to fight a bit, even before blossoming." she explainged, before giggling, sitting up a bit straighter as she did, "She outright pinned the captain of the football team to the wall when she blossomed." Hey, nothing like people getting their commerupance, right?

"That's cool, I would have guessed you would play a champion of swords and stuff." She looked at the digital sheet. It was a heck of a lot cleaner than hers was. Probably made more sense to have a digital one that you could adjust and edit as you went without leaving so many smudges on the paper. Plus all the faded ghosts of numbers past that never seemed to erase right. She'd probably have to redo her sheet once everything was finalized. Maybe digital was the way to go. But there was one detail that threw her off.
"She did?" How did Sophie find that out? "Were you talking to the girl running the game about that?" She looked at her own sheet. Hers was a mess of shorthand and numbers but if Sophie looked, there wasn't a single thing that really detailed a personality or history as such. Even the concept was just 'Magical healer medic'. "I guess I should have asked her what our characters backgrounds were going to be." In her mind, she was still treating this like a video game. Her backstory would just be told to her as she played and she'd find out more details as the game went on, assuming it mattered at all. She would just spawn from the ether, fully formed, and be forced to start interacting with the world.

"It was tempting. Swords are definitely the girls traveling around and righting wrongs. But Andarta is a kingdom. Hearts are the ones leading the charge. Gallant and charismatic lady knights are definitely up my alley." she told her, having fantasized just a bit for a moment, a blush appearing on her face. She... might have been experimenting with certain content online. When nobody was looking, of course, "I might get her a dot of Fuoco or two later though. I guess it depends on how much experience we get, right?"
She smiled as Keke continued to ask her about her character, "We're apparently starting as ordinary high school students, like in most of the anime with magical girls. We then get stronger and stronger as we fight the Darkness. Apparently, we're going to start with some monster of the week type stuff, as she called it."
She tapped her foot, as she started trying to thing of how she might help Keke get her idea together, "Maybe try using the description of the Mender of Swords and what they do, then work your way back to an idea that fits it. That migth help you."

Kekepania stared at her sheet with a frown. It was hard enough sorting this out without the help of a computer giving her guidance and telling her what stats were the most important. There weren't walkthroughs online or cheat guides for making the most effective build. "Yeah but, when do I find out who my character is?" Most games had flashbacks or blurbs or something to let you know what sort of person you were playing, and then gave you amnesia when they didn't. Maybe she should just go that route. "Can I just have amnesia and start the adventure?"
She sighed. That probably wasn't going to work. A character in a game like this was supposed to be more than just their numbers. It really was different to a lot of the games that she had played on her computer. So she thought about what menders and swords were like.
It was doctory stuff, hippocratic oaths and all that. Do no harm, heal things, make them better. Menders were all about fixing anything that was wrong, it wasn't about standing up for the weak but giving the weak the strength to stand up for themselves. Swords were gung ho, they charged in to help, at their very core they knew that helping was the right thing to do. Helping others was the essence of love and having that love was what gave them access to all the really cool powers. Kekepania tapped the pencil against the desk. "I dunno, swords are all lovey dovey and I don't know the first thing about that. I've never even had a crush on anyone."

"I mean, it's not like D&D where you can run around the world. Your character is presumably a high school girl, so she's got a life already."
Though it was unlikely anyone would read it, Sophie started proofreading the character sheet, keeping her eyes on the screen, though not at the expense on listening to Kekepania. Once the faux-princess got to the part about not ever having had a crush, she blushed just lightly, and brought up the Princess: The Hopeful PDF she was using, and clicked to Heart Fire.
"Apparently, it can be friendship, familial, any kind of love between people, not just the romantic stuff." she explained, "I'm not sure what the conditions for the rainbow-colored 'as you wish' flames are though."
She paused, perhaps a few trace feelings scurrying up to her conscious just enough to make her curious. Just enough. She looked up from her computer, lightly pushing it away from her a few inches, "You know."
She she smiled, "What are you looking for in a lover?"

"Never played that either." Kekepania muttered. Well, she was a high school girl so how much harder could it be to play one? So maybe she should think about what she would do with magic powers. Well the ideas that came to mind really depended on what sort of powers she got, but Kekepania was sure she'd just go out and fix the world. There were a lot of things that needed fixing nowadays and she didn't have the power to change them. But that was more character advancement, how she would level up her character to be most effective at getting things done. She had to come up with not fighting stuff now.
Kekepania didn't notice the coloring on Sophie's cheeks, she was still far too stuck on her own thoughts and nowhere near aware enough of other people to catch something that was less obvious than a bullhorn in the face. Kekepania put her elbow on the table and rested her chin on her palm. "I dunno." She said as she stared into the void that would maybe one day coalesce into her character. "I guess I should have a parent, or both." Yeah, two parents would have been nice to have. A nice change, and what was a role playing game for if not for experiencing the impossible?
"I don't know what I want." She flipped her character sheet over and stared writing in what little blank space was left. "Probably a strong guy, tall, good looking, able to take care of me, maybe he can help me with my coding sometimes." Yeah, a big family, with cousins and grandparents and maybe even a sibling or two. She'd have to name them all and come up with what they were like. "And he's got to be super loyal. No running off with some tramp, no cheating, no disappearing one night and never coming back." She was a girl with opinions about what she wanted. Though she hadn't really put much effort into finding that guy, but she definitely knew that no guy from back home made her heart beat faster. Still, what a weird way to ask if there was anyone you liked.
"What's your ideal lover, then?"

Well, it's not like she expected her to have played it before. Most of what she knew about D&D was from overhearing (mostly) boys at hobby shops talk about it. The actress-knight-wannabe nodded to Keke, "Good, that's a good start." Probably would want a stable background, maybe some resource dots or circle, "Well, maybe then her social situation."
She slumped a bit, even as she turned more to her friend. 'He' had been stated repeatedly, and she was given a laundry-list of qualities. Nothing
She continued to blush, "Well, they'd I mean. You know, I'd like to sort of flip the script and be their shining knight. So maybe someone sincere about their feelings, or at least that might be when they open up a bit more. I guess I'd like them to have kinda an adventurous spirit, and an imagination, And of course, an artsy side would be nice." She smiled, almost looking briefly dreamy, though the image of a lover in her head looked more like a cute red-head girl with glasses.
Pulling back her laptop, she looked over at her again, "You know, maybe your girl could be die-hard on bringing back the Kingdom like it used to be. Almost a little Terra in that Fuoco." Sounded like something that would appeal to Keke.

Kekepania kept writing on the page, but every few lines she had to stop. She brought the pencil to her mouth and chewed on the eraser. A normal family, but what did that look like. If you had what looked like an entire family tree like what was growing on the sheet, where would you keep them all? Like, they could all live in a mansion, and it would have to be to fit that many people in it. Or maybe an apartment building. Ooh, that sounded fun. She made a note off to one side and then started adding more details to that.
Sophie described her ideal crush and Kekepania listened but didn't exactly hear. Though Sophie gave no specific gender, and maybe even avoided it, Kekepania immediately just assumed a guy. Obviously that's what the girl wanted. "That sounds nice, but I know I wouldn't want to be like their mother or anything. But I totally agree with you about the imagination and artistic sides though. But, I don't know if I'd want them to be artsy in the same ways I am. Especially if they were better than me at it. Or worse. Actually, I'm not sure which would bother me more."
Being superior to others was neat but it wasn't exactly good for marriage probably. And Kekepania knew herself enough to be wary of her own temper and quickness to envy. "That's a good idea." She flipped the paper over and started erasing a different section of the sheet. Though with her eraser damaged and well used as it was, it smeared a bit which helped to explain why her sheet looked like the disaster it had become. Not to mention when she seemed unbothered and just wrote over the smudges. "Gotta keep people up and fighting the good fight if we ever want to save the world and make it all better, right?"

Kekepania did seem like the kind of girl who would be concerned about a proverbial rat race, but she could understand about wanting a different art, or at least not wanting to be the less able of the pair. She smiled, and said, "Right. So, anything else you'd like help with, or ideas or..." Which was a bit of a tricky point. She knew the faux-princess's sense of pride was strong, though this wasn't an issue she was prepared to chase her hard on.

Kekepania wrote quickly in her messy scrawl and made just a whole twisted tree of half cousins and brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles, but a lot of them were just written as half uncle, or Diane's cousin's mother. The trouble was, she couldn't think of names for all these people. She brought the pencil to her mouth and bit into her eraser again. "Maybe with some names. I don't know what to call all these people." She frowned at the sheet. How did all these people even manage to exist in one family. There were big families back on the island but keeping everyone in order, knowing who was who, did they have spreadsheets or something whenever they had dinner?
"Actually, umm." She turned and looked at Sophie. "Do you have any brothers or sisters or cousins or something?" She really didn't like talking about her own home life. A run down apartment or sharing an old house with a family friend was not the kind of glamorous lifestyle that a princess ought to have. But maybe this much revelation was ok. Still, her face colored and she couldn't look Sophie directly in the eye as she forced herself to admit her life wasn't amazingly perfect in every way. "I only knew my mom so I don't really have much experience with that kind of thing."

From a glance, it looked like Keke was going a bit overboard. She had scrawled a bunch of names and titles at the start, but it didn't look like she was doing more than writing names (if not less). She waited for a moment, "The extended family probably isn't going to show up much. Just pick a more random-ish name for them,
Sophie paused as she listened to Keke. She shook her head when she was asked if she had any siblings, "Nah, I'm an only child." she explained. Honestly, she'd been a handful at times; she wondered how parents with two kids or more managed to keep their sanity intact

Kekepania bit her pencil again. Random names, her face fell at the idea that they wouldn't all be showing up. But then, Kekepania would know they were there and that was most important. This girl had a big family and lots of people to support her and that was super important. She looked down at the sheet and decided to just leave a few names blank right now. Maybe she could find a name guide online to do the rest of the work for her.
"I think it would have been nice, sometimes, to have a sister, like an older one sometimes." Somebody who could be a bit more reliable occasionally, somebody to help cook or clean when mom was out of her head. Somebody to share stories with, to play with, to talk to. Somebody real. She put her pencil down across the character sheet. "So that's family stuff done, but how do I blossom?" It was more rhetorical than a real question. "So you did it by taking down a bully sports guy. That doesn't really work for a Mender."
She pulled out her phone and pulled up the descriptions she had saved for both swords and meanders. The working at a foreign hospital really wasn't her style, and an oil rig in the middle of nowhere, that didn't sound nearly as exciting as working on the front lines and saving people as they fought giant monsters and stuff. Love, though, some event related to love that would lead to blossoming. What if she used it as a way to get her girl into the adventure. "Ok," Kekepania turned in her chair and leaned towards Sophie, "so maybe she had a friend who was a magical girl already, and my girl was like the best friend supporter. And then her friend gets super hurt and that gets her to blossom and stuff."

As a fellow only child, Sophie could hear the desire to have a sibling in her friend's voice. Sophie could sympathize. While it seemed her old best friend, Satsuki, had envied Sophie's only child status when she was fighting with her sister, she seemed pretty happy the rest of the time. Heck, when Satsuki could be at her cutest when she was getting along and laughing with her older sister... something she was more capable of admitting to herself recently.
"That definately sounds good," she tells her, "Let's see. I guess it depends what you want to heal. If it's body, then maybe someone was hurt, and you couldn't find a First Aid kit. Though you could also heal minds or hearts instead." Or possibly things, though that seemed much like a Court of Diamonds thing. And then for Diamonds again, there was their research finding a cure for cancer, the common cold, though finding a cure for Ligma seemed more a Court of Spades thing, she smiled as she thought.
She snapped her fingers, as Kekepania stated her idea, "Great idea! And you could take the older magical girl as the Mentor merit, or maybe even her Nakama as Allies." Not to mention that would be a great way to get the starting characters filled in on what was going on, which was probably a luxury otherwise.

The character sheet she had written was a mess of erasing marks and faint shadows of previously written stuff. And part of that was when she started, Kekepania had written basically every power that sounded cool, or could fit the character, or seemed interesting, or sounded like it could eventually be useful. This despite the fact that she was limited, some powers she wouldn't be allowed to have, and some of them were just completely unrelated to anything. Eventually she'd erased things down to a more manageable set, but it wasn't focused, not yet. She could drop a little more machine healing options and go completely all in to just healing people.
Her idea to be the sidekick at the start was met with approval from Sophie. Kekepania smiled at the sort of praise. And it could open up a new opportunity, even if it meant the girl she was making wasn't a main character, now she was since she had power. "Yeah, ok. She flipped the pages of the pdf to find the mentor merit and then paused. "Oh wait, I should ask the Storyteller if I'm allowed to do that first." She switched apps and started typing out a message.
"I hope she says yes. It'd be a good way to get us all in the game together and to have somebody to help us if something goes wrong." Since she hadn't been thinking about the mentor merit it wasn't something she had written down and having some npc as important as another magical girl involved with the story definitely meant getting the Storyteller's involvement and permission. It was like a mod for a game, if you just plopped a character right in, steps had to be taken to make sure it fit in and didn't seem too out of place, and didn't break the whole game.

"You'll probably get it, It'll probably give them some sort of out if we get in too much trouble, sort of like a deus ex machina." It wasn't' the best from a literary standpoint, but it definitely was better than getting a character she worked hard on killed, "It definitely looks like your character's starting to really shape up."
But they probably needed to wait a minute or two for a good response, "So, aside from the game, how's thing's been going, your highness?" she asked. That little thing was still going on, not that she wasn't having fun with it. She relaxed in her chair just a little. She smiled pleasantly. It was nice having someone from the States around; it soothed her chronic homesickness.

Kekepania set her phone down face down and nodded. It would buzz when the message came through. "Yep, I'm pretty happy about that." She smiled a bit sheepishly, "If I'm honest, I had some, I don't know, like, nervousness? About the whole thing. It's a lot different than what I'm used to. Most of the stuff I've always done tells you what you're playing and then there are guides on the internet if your character sucks."
Kekepania's smile grew less sheepish and more set. "It's going pretty good. I think I'm starting to get the hang of history, it's really wild seeing how Japan looks at stuff that happened and the US, like, it's crazy different on what they think matters and what doesn't so much. And my game is coming along great too. I think I've got to the point where I can have like a guide assistant thing for a tutorial."
It didn't have any kind of model at all, and it clipped through anything, but that was probably ok if she made it some kind of guiding spirit. With the exception of a few animations, she could have it hover at a set point, buzzing in and out of a defined area to give it more life. Maybe it could be like a hummingbird model or something. THough that could be distracting. But she'd only just started thinking about it.

"It really is, isn't it?" she said back. It was a bit wild, honestly, and it took some getting used to. Though she wondered how different it would have been without World War II. She studied that just enough in middle school to know that the US had a big role in rebuilding a post-World War II Japan, so they probably had some influence there.
Sophie perked up a bit more, as her curiosity was suddenly piqued. "So has that influenced your game world at all? I mean, like have you worked on the..." she took a few moments, trying to figure out the right words.
"Lore. Have you developed your lore for your civilization's culture? I could see a combination of American and Japanese values being mixed up into there." Though Sophie could also see Kekepania making something wholy of her own design.Still, artists often drew inspiration from their environment, and Keke had more than a couple of interesting environments to draw from.

Kekepania looked at Sophie, head tilted slightly as she listened to her question about the game. Lore, it was a difficult thing to define when it came to her game. Certainly there was a national element to it, though that wasn't specifically Japanese or American, well, maybe a little American. "Not really, no." Kekepania scratched at her chin as she tried to think of a way to explain stuff. "Like, I don't know if you played minecraft, but there isn't a culture or history or whatever exactly."
Maybe minecraft wasn't the right game. "Like, I'm working sort of with the Hawaiian creation myth, you know? But also, the player is the spirit in charge of creating the land and the sea and making the world look how they want. Facing the monsters and spirits to make the world and maybe getting worshipers and stuff." She sighed, it seemed neither of them were exactly able to express their thoughts as succinctly as they wanted. "It's hard to explain right now."
Kekepania glanced at her phone, no message yet, the girl wasn't even online. It could be awhile, but hopefully not too long. "So maybe you decide there should be a mountain, just right there, that could anger the sea spirit and you'd have to tough it out against it's massive waves and stuff while it tears it down. But you beat it down and there you go, or maybe the land spirit there was happy being close to the sea and gets angry, so now it's a volcano and you need to figure out a way to save your village from the lava flow."
