It was cloudy today, and throughout the day, Fue found herself looking out the school windows hoping that the wind would come and blow them all away. Her wish never came true and as classes let out, she stepped out of the main building and looked up into grey skies. There was so much that you could plan for. So many eventualities that you could control. The weather was not one of them. She clutched at her chest and took a deep breath.
After the picnic, Fue had spent a long time thinking. She was not, by nature, the sort to rush into a situation before she understood the stakes. She was methodical, it showed in her pictures. Dozens of pictures of each and every food item until she was satisfied. But a person can’t live every moment of their lives that way. Sometimes you could only set things up the best you can before taking the plunge. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone and scrolled through to Moriko’s number.
Fue had spoken to her parents, for what little good that did. They were supportive, but then they always were. If anything, they did help confirm that these feelings were real, that it was some level of love that drove her heart to beat fast in the presence of her friend. But her parents were of no help for confessing. They seemed to have fallen in love quite by accident. Hate turned to love, and they were roommates to begin with. Fue didn’t seem to have that short cut and there was no hate or rivalry to build on, however that was supposed to work.
Honestly, that seemed a lot easier. Fue didn’t want to wreck the friendship that she’d cultivated with Moriko, it felt so much more special than any of the others she had. But if she let these feelings fester, they could change. Or even boil over like a pot under pressure. If that were to happen, it could be at a terrible time. No, better to do it now when she had the self confidence to get it done. She typed the message on her phone.
‘Hey Moriko, please meet me underneath the trees opposite the outdoor gym court. I have something I need to talk to you about.’
She stared at the words for awhile. They looked scary, hitting send would be a dangerous plunge but it had to be done. Plus, this looked like it was going to lead into a lecture by her parents. The message needed to be perfect too. She started walking towards the meeting place as she deleted the message and started over.
‘Hi Moriko, hope your day was great. Meet me across from the gym court.’
She deleted that one quickly. It was absolutely no good. Way too informal for a moment like the one Fue wanted to have for her confession. She didn't want to scare Moriko away before she even had a chance to confess but she also didn’t want Moriko thinking that this was a casual meeting either. It would be bad if she took Moriko by surprise, she didn’t seem like she enjoyed such things.
‘Hey, please meet me under the trees by the tennis courts. I have something for you.’
That seemed ok. She’d prepared a back up plan in case she panicked and failed to confess at the last minute. In her bag was a very special confectionary. Even if she did back out, there would be at least one confession. But she couldn’t back out. Fue took a deep breath. She had to be strong. If she wasn’t, she might not get another chance and happiness would flutter out of her grasp.
She stopped and looked up at the tree above her. This was one of the several dozen rumored locations at the school. A confession under this tree guaranteed happiness. But then, so did six other trees around the school, and a statue, and a bunch of other places. Superstitions seemed to flutter about the school like flour thrown through the air. She looked at her phone one more time and hit send.

It's finally the end of the day! Shoving her notebook and pencil case into her bookbag, Moriko snatches it up and quickly slips out the door of the classroom. The first ringing of the bell hasn't even ended yet and she's already headed down the hallway, straight for one of the building's exits. She doesn't care if the teacher wants to continue her lecture, that bell means that she's done with classes for the day! The halls begin to fill with the sounds of many voices, the noise growing in volume as more and more girls begin to empty the classrooms and enter the halls. Lips pressing into a firm line of determination, Moriko picks up her pace. Not quite running, but almost, she moves quickly, dodging the oncoming students and avoiding any kind of contact with them. It's only a matter of moments before she's made it through the exit doors and outside of the school building. But, there's no time to relax. At least not just yet. She's still too close to the main school building. Picking up the pace, she falls into an easy jog and heads away from the common paths and places that most of the students use. She's been itching to be outside and away from all those people. All day she's been distracted and unable to focus. She's been this way, on and off, ever since the hiking trip with Fue. Thinking of the photographer, Moriko's lips tilt upwards into a fond smile. Slowing down to a walk, she sighs in relief when the sounds of the students leaving the school building is muted by distance. The tension that had built in her finally ebbs away.
Muscles relaxing, Moriko glances around. Somehow, she's found herself in a small copse of trees. The path she's on has narrowed and turned into a dirt track. It's one of many walking paths that wind around the school campus. Stepping off to the side, she sits down on a metal bench, another soft sigh escaping her. Throwing her arms up against the back of the bench, Moriko tilts her head back and stares up into the leaves of the tree she sits under. Through their gaps, she can see the sky above. It's a rather dreary looking day. Gray clouds, low and heavy, cover the sky completely. A fitful winds pushes the clouds along, as if hurrying them away from the school grounds. Yet even as they scud away, more clouds just seem to take their place. An endless blanket of ever shifting gray.
Even as she watches the leaves sway with the breezes, even as the scent of green and damp fills her senses, her mind once again wanders. Specifically, it returns to that wonderful day. To the lake and sunshine. To the hidden place beneath the stones. To the picnic. To the most wondrous girl who had made it all happen.
The image of Fue on that day rises to the forefront of her mind. Her fiery hair, glowing in the gloom of the hiking path. Her dark eyes shining, and a small smile on her lips, as she reveals her picnic surprise. Her bright smile and carefree laugh rings in her ears. She'd been so relaxed and open at that time. A side of the usually reserved girl that Moriko had only ever caught glimpses of before. A side of her that she can't seem to forget.
Giving a quiet growl of irritation, Moriko leans forward abruptly. Running her fingers through her hair, she lets loose another sigh. "What's wrong with me?", she questions, her frustration and confusion clear in her voice. She's never felt like this before, never had thoughts of another consume her quite like this before. And due to school being so busy, she's not had much chance to really fully think it through. But now it's the end of the week. She's got the whole weekend to do just that!
The problem is, she's not sure where to start. Maybe she's sick? Should she go to the school nurse? Before she gets any further, a loud noise disrupts her thoughts. Jumping in surprise, it takes Moriko a moment to realize that the sound is coming from her phone. Digging around her bookbag, she manages to find it. Fishing the phone out, she flips it open. There are very few numbers in her contacts list, and even fewer people who actually have her number. At first, she thinks it's her Aunt just checking up on her. But then she sees who the message is from.
"Fue?" she murmurs in surprise. It's not often that the other girl messages her. They see each other almost everyday, after all. If they need to tell each other anything, it's usually done in person.
Moriko opens the message and reads it.
‘Hey, please meet me under the trees by the tennis courts. I have something for you.’
Heart skipping a beat, she stares at those seemingly innocent words. What could Fue possibly have for her? And why not wait until their usual meeting time to give it to her? Something was off. Curiosity, and a sense of unease, rises in her.
Of course, she's going. It doesn't even cross her mind not to. Clumsily, Moriko sends her reply.
"Okay. On my way."
Snapping her phone closed, she pockets in. Rising from her seat on the bench, she orients herself. Once she's figured out where she is in relation to where Fue wants to meet her, she breaks out into a steady jog. It wouldn't do to make Fue wait too long, after all!
It doesn't take Moriko long to reach the meeting area. As she rounds the fenced corner of one of the tennis courts, she spots Fue standing underneath a tree. Breaking out into a hard sprint, she runs right up to her friend. Skidding to a halt, she leans forwards slightly. Panting just a little bit, her hair in disarray and school uniform slightly rumpled, she looks up at Fue, and smiles.
Straightening up from her slight stoop, Moriko adjusts her bookbag at her side, which had slid to an awkward angle during her run. Smile turning a bit sheepish, she runs her fingers nervously through her hair and says the first thing that comes to mind.
"Hey."

The reply didn't take any time at all but it was still long enough for a stream of panic and fear and a tiny bit of hope to flow through her mind. Mostly it was just pure emotions, not even real thoughts, but there was a nervous one in the back of her mind worried that Moriko might say she was busy, and that small part was a little hopeful as well. Fue's phone buzzed in her hand and it made her flinch. Better to know now than put it off, she looked at the screen. Moriko was on her way.
Rather than giving her relief, it opened the door for the anxiety to push in. It was the worst part of the roller coaster, the build up to the first drop. The part where you didn't know what was going to happen next and all you could do was imagine. And her imagination had a terrible habit of running to the dark. The panic button in her backpack was starting to seem a lot more enticing right now. She slipped her bag from her shoulders and set it down beside her. It was a sweet treat, something Moriko was sure to like, and it had a confession of its own, so it wasn't as if she wasn't revealing something.
Fue shook her head. Despite all the doubts, despite the nervousness that was making her hands shake, she had to be strong. Her parents had told her that they supported her, they were rooting for her. She couldn't let anyone down here, especially not herself. Fue clenched her hands into fists, digging the nails into her palms. Time to get a grip, no time to panic or worry, she'd just spotted Moriko turning the corner of the tennis courts. Fue smiled, she often did when she saw Moriko. Ma Mere had said that was because Fue made a space in her heart and Moriko filled it like cream in choux.
Moriko was in dissaray as usual. Her uniform was wrinkly, her hair had no style to it at all. It was probably because she kept running her hand through it all day. Fue's smile got wider as Moriko came to a stop in front of her and did precisely that. "Hey Moriko." Fue answered. Her mother must have been right about the hole in the heart because with Moriko standing right in front of her, Fue's heart felt a whole lot heavier and it was beating a lot harder. Fue relaxed her grip and hoped her hands weren't shaking too badly.
"So, I was doing a lot of thinking, you know, after the trip and stuff. I talked to my parents and...err." She trailed off. This wasn't according to script, this wasn't good. She was sounding like an idiot. "So I was thinking, maybe there was something we should talk about. I should talk about." This was going worse and worse. Her eyes darted to her backpack. The emergency button was looking so much more attractive.

When Fue smiles at her, Moriko can't help but to smile back. Despite the slight unease at the break in their usual routine, she can't help but feel her spirits rise. Just by being in the other girl's presence Moriko feels a curious warmth spread through her. Her smile is much gentler than her usual expression. Her eyes, often wary and watchful, soften into warm pools of sparkling teal. Body relaxing, Moriko stands before Fue. Her whole posture is one of trust and openness. She's not like this around anyone else. Only with Fue. Her breath has calmed down, her heartbeat falling into a strong and steady rhythm. With the wind tugging at her hair and clothing, she patiently waits as Fue returns her greeting. She doesn't need to ask the other why she'd called her out here, for Fue starts speaking right on the tail of her greeting. She speaks hesitantly, almost as if she's not sure what words she wishes to use. Tilting her head to the side, Moriko's smile slips into a small frown of worry as she notices that Fue's not acting like her usual self. Gaze drifting down to the other girl's hands, she can see the slight tremor in them. The other girl's voice sounds... strained? Unsure? It's definitely not Fue's normal tones, that's for sure. Alarm rises in her. Is she in trouble? Moriko wonders, concern gnawing at her. Fue always seems pretty collected to her. She may be quiet, but she's always so sure of the way she is and the way she wants things. Like how she knows exactly how she wants her food pictures to turn out, and works doggedly to bring that vision to light. But now, she seems at a loss. If she needs help, I will help her! Moriko thinks fiercely. If she's in trouble, we'll figure it out together!
Fue says they need to talk about something. Blinking in surprise, the unease of earlier rises in Moriko. Does the trouble have to do with her? A pang of guilt shoots through her. Is she causing Fue problems? She doesn't want that! She'll fix it, whatever it is!
Then Fue's words seem to fail her, and the other girl looks away. Following Fue's gaze, Moriko notices the backpack resting at Fue's feet. Not understanding, but wanting to, Moriko steps closer to the other girl. Slipping her own bookbag off, she reaches forward and lightly cups Fue's hands in her own. The trembling is much more obvious now. Drawing closer, Moriko tries to get Fue to look into her eyes.
"Talk?" she asks, her voice soft, her worry clear. "About what? Are you in trouble?" Pausing, she takes a soft breath in hesitation, then she asks the question that worries her the most.
"Is it me? Am I causing you trouble?"
Moriko's voice drops almost to a whisper at those words. A slight quiver gives away her emotion. It hurts to think that she may be causing the other girl any kind of grief.
Her grip around Fue's hands tighten slightly as she anxiously waits for Fue's answer.

Fue's heart beat faster and faster as Moriko just stood there. That was all it took. Moriko stood there, staring at her, Fue glanced into Moriko's eyes and her own darted away. God, they were so pretty. She'd lose all control if she stared into them so long. Her heart was beating harder, louder, she could have sworn that she could hear it echoing and feel it in her throat. Why was it being so difficult? Fue'd planned this. She was supposed to be good at planning. Everyone said so. That was the point of her photographs. Her plans weren't working now.
She could feel the stress building up inside her head, a growing pressure threatening to pop. She looked at her backpack again. It wasn't going to work, none of this was going to work. She had been stupid even considering this. Even the escape clause was going to fail. She was going to lose everything. Then, Moriko grabbed her hands. The other girl's hands weren't soft, like Fue's mothers. Moriko was too outdoorsy, she climbed trees, dug in the dirt, who knew what else, and there was the woodworking. Fue's own hands were soft. She played with food and took pictures. But Moriko's hands seemed to hold some kind of power, the moment they touched, Fue's panic faded.
It didn't go away, not entirely, but it was like the backpack when they had hiked. Moriko relieved some of the burden. But the light touch wasn't enough. Fue clasped Moriko's hands in hers and held on tight. Not only to keep Moriko close, but to stop herself from running away. "No, it's not trouble. Nothing like trouble. But it does have something to do with you. And me, the two of us." She tried to clarify. "I, umm, when we first met, it was kind of awkward, but I thought you were neat and we were friends." This wasn't on script at all. "I don't, you're umm...When we went on the camping trip together, I had a lot of fun." There, that was some more familiar ground.
"More fun than I've had in a long time. I don't really like doing a lot of outdoor stuff like hiking and stuff, but with you, I didn't mind. And making the picnic for you was amazing. I was, it was like, you know. It reminded me of why I take pictures, you know? The food is made for eating. To make people happy." Was she making sense? She was having trouble making full sentences and following through on an idea, her brain kept shifting gears as she spoke. "When I saw your face when you saw it, it was good." She could feel the blush coming, up through her collar and coloring her ears. "Like, it was worth the long hike, and the long train ride, and the blisters and everything. I wanted to see it more." Wait, no, it sounded like she was asking for more picnics.
Fue shook her head. "What I mean is, like, when I was there with you, by the river after we ate, I was happy. And it wasn't just because the food was nice or the lake was pretty. It was because of you. I like you, Moriko. You're smart and fun and you love food more than even I do. You make me laugh and you're so pretty. I want to be more than just friends. I don't know if you feel the same, and I understand that maybe you prefer boys. But I love you." She looked into Moriko's eyes. "And I want to be your girlfriend."

The trembling seems to lessen, but Fue's grip is strong and almost... desperate? It comes as a bit of a surprise, Fue grasping her hands back so tightly. But Moriko want's to know what is bothering her friend, so she gives an encouraging squeeze back. Fue speaks, and Moriko listens closely. Relief shoots through her when Fue says that there's no trouble. Though she remains slightly skeptical on that part. If there is nothing wrong, then why does Fue look like there is? Ah, it is about them, whatever is bothering her friend. Trying not to frown too much, Moriko nods her head at her the other girl's words. They echo her own experiences. She nods again at the mention of the camping trip.
She, too, greatly enjoyed the hike and picnic. And particularly, it was because Fue was there. She'd realized, since their return, that she would not have had nearly as much of a good time if she'd somehow managed to get to the lake on her own. Actually, she probably wouldn't have made it back to the school, she thinks wryly. But that's all besides the point. Fue had been there, and it had been wonderful. She'd found herself remembering the trip quite often since they got back. And almost without fail, her mind would always drift to Fue. How she'd looked in the shade of the forest, rusty hair burning in the gloom. Her smile, bright and carefree, a rarity when on school grounds. Her pale skin, glistening with water from the lake as the sunlight danced and winked from one droplet to the other. Her eyes...
Inexorably, Moriko finds herself gazing up into those dark eyes. Most of the time, they seem flat and apathetic to those that don't know Fue well. But the way they brighten when Fue is excited or happy is unforgettable. And how, when light hits them just right, it reveals their hidden depths. The red that laces through the brown, peeking shyly through the darkness. Cherries dipped in chocolate. There's nothing dull about them! Moriko finds herself unable to look away. Her heart quickens, it's beat pulsing in her ears, trying to drown out the other girl's words. She refuses to let that happen. Taking slow, calm breathes, she forces her ears to hear the other's words. Even if her hands have suddenly turned clammy in her nervousness. She will NOT miss what Fue is trying to tell her!
A smile tugs her lips when Fue says she'd been happy that day at the lake. She's glad she'd been able to evoke that feeling in Fue, since she feels the same around her. But then, in a rush of words, face and ears glowing red in an impressive blush, Fue says something that sends an electric current through her. It's so shocking, that Moriko finds her breath halted in her lungs. Teals wide and unblinking, she stares up into those irresistible eyes, her mouth slightly open.
"You love me?" she manages to squeeze out, before words fail her again.
What does she mean, by love? Is it like how her parents loved each other? Is it like how her grandmother speaks of her grandfather back when he was alive? Or does she mean something else by it? And girlfriend? She's heard that word before, spoken on the lips of other students and mentioned in literature she's read. But what exactly is the significance of that word, when shared between the two of them?
Confused, thoughts roaring and heart pounding, her hands had loosened their grip slightly on Fue's, but had not let go. A burning desire to have these questions answered rises in her. She suddenly tightens her grip, being careful not to cause pain. Leaning forward, she rises slightly in the balls of her feet, bringing her face closer to Fue's. Expression dead serious, she asks, her voice soft but insistent.
"What kind of love is the love for a girlfriend? What does it mean to be a girlfriend?"
She wants to know. No, she needs to know. Hopes and wishes with all her heart. That it's the same kind of emotions that she's feeling right now.
Please let it be so!
Belatedly, she recalls one other thing that Fue had said.
Did she call me pretty?

“I do, I think I do. I don’t really know what love feels like but I think it feels like this. I asked my parents and they told me a bunch of parent things like I should trust in my heart. I think my heart says I love you.” Fue said, the words rushing out of her mouth like a torrential flood. She didn’t have a roadmap any more. Every second was new and untested. None of her expectations were being met here, good or bad. None of her rehearsals had been for a reaction like this. Fue was flying by the seat of her pants now.
“I’ve never felt this feeling before for anybody. It’s like, I don’t know. It’s completely different than how I feel when I’m with anybody else. Not any of my friends, not my parents, nobody. I see you and my heart feels like it could stop but also like it’s going to pound out of my chest.” She stepped closer, pulling Moriko’s hand up against her chest to feel the thumping of my heart. “That’s what it feels like whenever I think about you.”
She leaned in and put her forehead against Moriko’s. “When I see you, when we get close, whenever you smile, this is how hot my face gets.” Fue stared into those beautiful eyes. “If this isn’t real love, I can’t even imagine what that feels like because what I feel like now is more than everything ever. Like I could explode at any time.” She tried to sound emphatic rather than desperate or deranged. Her explanations sounded stupid in her own head but she didn’t have the words to express the depth, the strength, and the overwhelming amount of emotion she was feeling for Moriko even at this very moment.
How could Moriko ask what kind of love this was? Could it be that she didn’t feel anything for Fue? That might be crushing, stifling, the most hurtful thing at all. “I want to be with you a lot. Like, a lot of the time. I want to show you my pictures first of anyone. I want to go on walks when you do. I want to share my food with you. I want to be next to you.” Her whole face was turning red. It was so hard to say without being embarassed about being so frank about it.
“I want to hold your hand all the time. M-maybe even k-k-kiss someday.” She turned her head away out of sheer panicked embarrassment. What a thing to say, even in an area as sparse as behind the tennis courts today, they were still in public and to be so abrupt as to say such a thing out loud in a public place rather than in the privacy of your own home or a dorm or whatever was mortifying. Sure there were kisses hello, and familial kisses, especially among the French, even close friends might do so. But this, this kind of kissing, between a boyfriend and girlfriend, or girlfriend and girlfriend in this case was almost indecent.

She's said it again! She thinks her heart says she loves me? Her own heart skipping a beat at those words, Moriko rocks back onto her heels, still in shock. She gulps, her nervousness rising. Fue keeps speaking, though, and the way she's describing how she's feeling seems awfully similar to her own experiences. But is what she's feeling really love? Are their emotions similar enough for her to say that she, too, is in love? Then Fue steps close, snagging Moriko's hand and bringing it to her chest! Freezing in place, Moriko feels her own heart leap into her throat. She's stiffened up at the unexpected action, her eyes wide and staring as Fue leans forward and gently places her forehead against her own. Her breath hitches in her throat, and suddenly she finds it difficult to breathe. She's never been in a situation like this before! She has no idea how to respond. Her eyes lock onto Fue's own, and she can't help but to stare into those warm depths. She can feel how hot Fue's face is. Her own cheeks begin to burn and she knows that soon they will match the other's heat. The hand that rests against Fue's soft bosom twitches slightly, for she can indeed feel the racing of Fue's heart throbbing through her fingertips. An echo to the her heart's own erratic beat.
She want's to be with me all the time? To just be near me? Hearing Fue describe her desire's, Moriko realizes that this is what she's been thinking about, on and off, ever since the lake trip. No one in class really noticed, since no one really ever interacts with her, but she'd noticed how often she'd get lost in thought. And those thoughts were always inevitably focused on Fue. How she'd wish she could be with the other girl more. How she'd see something that reminds her of Fue. Or how she'd find something and immediately think of showing it to Fue. Sometimes, it'd just be the general feeling of wanting the other girl near her.
A slow dawning rises in Moriko, just as the sun's soft light colors the sky in the morning, revealing the details of a shadow shrouded land below. There's pockets of darkness still; an uncertainty about what exactly she's supposed to do, or how she's supposed to act. But, it's confidence that firms her understanding. For everything that Fue has described about her feelings towards Moriko is the same as her own towards the other girl. It's the same! So... maybe she's in love too?
Joy rising in her, Moriko opens her mouth, wanting to tell Fue her conclusion, when the other girl suddenly says she want's to kiss her! Now, Moriko may not be all that familiar with a great many things, but she definitely knows what kissing is! She's seen her parents do it often enough, and even had it explained to her when she asked. The red staining her cheeks spreads to her ears and down her neck. Her mouth hangs open, her words stolen once again by her embarrassment and surprise.
Fue's turned away from her, her own face glowing from her confession. Frozen momentarily, Moriko knows she's got to do something. She knows that inaction can just be as harmful as action, but feels the former would be worse than the latter in this case. Shaking herself out of her daze, she lifts her free hand to Fue's chin and gently turns the other girl's head to look back at her. Peering quietly into Fue's eyes, Moriko's smile is soft, her own teals warm and accepting.
"I'm not as good with words as you," she begins, her voice low but firm, "But all you've said is like how I feel." Leaning forward, she once again presses her forehead against Fue's. Dropping her hand from Fue's chin, she lets it fall to her side, her other hand still trapped in the other girl's grip, pressed firmly against her chest.
"Your words made me realize what I've been feeling ever since the lake," she continues, her eyes searching. "I don't know much about love. At least, not this kind of love. I've never felt this way before, so I didn't know what to do. Still don't, really." She gives a tremulous smile at this statement, but she doesn't want to lie. Especially to Fue.
"But, I think I feel the same as you do. And if you feel the same as me, and don't mind that it's with me..." she pauses, her breath fluttering in her nervousness, before she continues, " ...then I'd like to give it a try. Being your girlfriend. That is."
Even as she says the words, she bites her lip, not sure what else to do. This is all a complete deviation from her experience. In a rush, she adds, her awkwardness and poor timing on display.
"I don't know much about it, though! But I'll try my best!"
At least she's earnest!

Fue couldn't breathe. She had been so worried, more worried than even she had realized. So much weight on her tiny shoulders and this was the tipping point. Even just having admitted this, just saying it, was like shedding it off. But that wasn't enough. She wanted to know Moriko's answer, and she wanted that answer to be yes. That desperation, she tried to hide it. She couldn't meet Moriko's eyes in case it showed and pushed the other girl away. But Moriko's hand came up and Fue felt it against her skin. Her whole body shivered. Just that touch in such a charged moment threw her emotions for a loop.
Fue, now forced to stare directly into Moriko's eyes, now couldn't turn away, even when Moriko let go of her chin. Fue's eyes were starting to shimmer as tears started beading at the edges. Then Moriko spoke. Of new strange feelings. Feelings that had started at the lake. Fue knew those feelings well, maybe they'd been growing like an ember from earlier but it was the lake that caused them to turn into a roaring fire in her heart. Moriko didn't know about love, but neither did Fue, not really. This was all new to the both of them. And Moriko thought that Fue wouldn't be happy with her. That it would be settling for less.
"Of-Of course I don't mind." Fue stammered out. The first tear broke free from the damn and trailed down her cheek. "You-You're so g-great. I'm not g-good enough for you." She released Moriko's hand but only to instantly wrap both arms around the girl and squeeze deeply. She buried her face into Moriko's shoulder as she started sobbing. "I'm so happy." she wailed.
The weight was gone, maybe a new weight would come, life would certainly intrude again at some point, but this weight was gone and her whole body had relaxed. The tenseness was gone and the paranoia and fear that she felt was all rushing out, mostly in the form of tears as she lost a lot of the self-possessed nature she usually forced herself to present when she was out in public. Now she was looking an absolute mess, and probably making Moriko uncomfortable. But how could she stop? She really was so happy.
"I bro-brought something for you." She said, still choking out sobs. "It's from a st-tore and it's b-been in my bag all daaay." She still hadn't let go. It felt like she never would. "I h-h-hope you like it." She hiccuped which just set off the last of the control she had and she sobbed again. God, what must she look like? The happiest day she could remember and she was sobbing and hiccuping and looked an absolute wreck.

Gazing directly into Fue's eyes, it's impossible for Moriko to not notice the tears forming in them. They well up, the moisture adding a shimmering sheen and depth that only serves to intensify the emotions whirling within them. Fue suddenly blurts out that she doesn't mind! And that seems to burst the dam, for suddenly she's crying, quite heavily! The other girl babbles through her tears, her words a barrage of complements and self depreciation. Fue releases the hold on her hand, but just as quickly wraps both of her arms around her and gives her a fierce hug! The last words of how happy she is ends in a wail that doesn't sound happy at all. Stiffening up in surprise, Moriko has both of her hands out to the sides, hovering over the other girl's back. She's frozen, too shocked to respond immediately. Her face burns, for the complements, along with the unexpected hug, has let her embarrassment flare up to greater heights than previously. W-what do I do?? she wonders frantically. How is she supposed to react to such extreme emotion?? Gulping, she decides to go with her first instinct, and wraps her own arms around Fue's shoulders. She squeezes back firmly, and lightly rocks her. She can feel Fue's tears soaking her shoulder, but she doesn't mind. If she can bring comfort to her companion, if all she's able to do is hold her, then she will! So she returns the hug with one that is strong, but gentle. Leaning her cheek against the top of Fue's head, Moriko makes soft shushing noises, sometimes adding a quiet "It''s okay, it's okay" as she rocks her slightly. Even though the other girl is a bit taller than her, Moriko has no trouble holding onto her, for Fue has stooped over and fallen direclty into her arms.
Moriko simply listens as Fue begins to speak again. The other's words are broken up by her sobs, but Moriko is able to make out most of what she says. Something for me? she thinks curiously, though her focus is still firmly on making sure Fue is all right. Then Fue starts to hiccup, which sets off another bought of crying. Tightening her grip slightly, Moriko suddenly gives a soft chuckle as she's reminded on the first time they'd met. A scene quite similar to this one had played out back then.
Shifting her head slightly, so that her lips are close to Fue's ear, Moriko gives a soft sigh.
"I seem to make you cry a lot, don't I?" she asks, her voice soft and soothing and somewhat teasing.
"But you know what?" she adds, the emotion behind her words giving them a slight tremble.
Not giving the other girl a chance to respond to her question, she continues in a swift, breathy murmur,
"I'm happy too."

"I-I'm sorry". She said with a hiccup. "I don't mean to b-be a leaky faucet." She tried taking a deep breath and hiccuped again. "I promise I don't usually c-c-cry so much." She was not doing well at the attempt to regain control of herself. She let go of Moriko, but only with one arm. She didn't want to let go completely just yet in case she woke up and this was all a dream or something. With a bit of awkward shuffling, she managed to bend down and reach her bag, all without letting go of Moriko.
She lay her head against Moriko's shoulder and slid the bag over her shoulder so she could keep it up while digging through it. "I'm so 'hic' glad you said yes. I was worried all day." She finally found the target and pulled out a small white box with a fancy rose crest design printed on top of it, the sign of a relatively popular bakery not far into the city. "I got 'hic' this in case I couldn't say anything." She sniffed and blinked away the remnants of tears. "But I said it, and you 'hic' said yes and I'm just so hap-py." Her voice broke on the last word but she managed to keep it together.
"But there's something I've 'hic' got to tell you. My name is kind of weird and I hope you don't think I'm weird. My first name is Miyu, but I prefer to go by Fue, It's 'hic' just a lot simpler. But together my name is close to umm." She took a deep breath, hiccuped again, and this time there was more of a prominent French accent. "Mille-feuille." There, she'd admitted it to somebody in full seriousness. "It means thousand leaf or thousand sheets." She held the box for Moriko to open. "So this is what I'm named after."
Inside the box, was a pastry, three layers of puff pastry with thick layers of cream and roasted almond crumbs between them. The top was glazed with white icing streaked by chocolate that left a leafy pattern, and garnishing it were two paper thin slices of candied lemon. It had gotten a little mussed up being in the bag all day but it was still very pretty. "I just thought I should tell you, no keeping any secrets or anything. I want you to have it and I hope you like me as much as you'll like it."

With the image of a leaky faucet with Fue's face still strong in her mind, it takes Moriko by surprise when the other girl unwraps one arm from around her. Shaking her head slightly, to dislodge the image, she returns her full attention to Fue, who has bent down to retrieve her bag. The arm still around her waist tugs at her, the other's motion throwing Moriko off balance. Shifting about, she takes a more steady stance, bracing against Fue's pull in so as not to let them both fall. Luckily, Fue rises from her stoop, bag in hand. Keeping steady, Moriko listens quietly as Fue continues talking. She was worried all day? she thinks guiltily. She really doesn't like being the cause of other's unhappiness. And all the crying seems to indicate that Fue was feeling that way for a while. But she says she's happy! Moriko reminds herself. And indeed, Fue's head resets comfortably on her shoulder, her free hand pulling out the object she's been searching for. Again, Fue says she's happy and Moriko finds her guilt easing, for why would she keep saying if she doesn't really mean it? In fact, she feels her own happiness rising within her at the repeated words.
Glancing curiously down at the little white box, she notices the intricately drawn rose printed on top of it. But at Fue's words, Moriko returns her gaze to the other's face. A slight frown tilts her lisps down at Fue asking her not to think of her as weird. About to protest, she stops herself when Fue rushes on, her words tumbling out quickly. A tickle of delight pings through her at the French accent when Fue says her full name. And a thousand leaves! How pretty! Then the box is presented to her, Fue holding it out and saying it's what she's named after. Her tone and expression are serious, and Moriko nods solemnly in reply. She doesn't quite understand why Fue seems so serious, but she can at least tell that this is something very important to her.
Reaching forward, Moriko gently lifts the lid, taking care not to jostle the box too much so as not to knock it out of Fue's hands. Inside the box is one of the most beautiful and delicious pastries she's ever seen. The sweet scent, mixed with the slightest tang of lemon, wafts up from the box and sets her nose a twitching. Blinking, for this is not at all what she expected, Moriko gazes into Fue's eyes, her own teals shining brightly.
Grinning excitedly, she leans in over the pastry, her eyes locked onto Fue's. "You got this for me?" she asks, her voice surprised but cheerful. "A dessert you're named after, for me to eat?" she adds, her grin widening. "Then you bet I'll like it! As much as I like you, though..." she pauses in thought, her expression turning serious. "Well, we'll see," she says, her tone contemplative, but her eyes still shining. Straightening back up, she nods. "But, I want to share it," she says, firmly. "Food is always best when shared with people you care about."
Even as the words leave her lips, the wind picks up and a low roll of thunder rumbles in the distance. Looking up at the gray clouds, Moriko makes note of how low they seems to sit in the sky. "Looks like it's gonna rain soon," she murmurs, her gaze falling to rest on Fue's face once more. Smiling softly, she carefully closes the box lid.
"Let's find someplace to eat this," she says, a warm smile tugging her lips up and slightly crinkling the corners of her eyes. "Together."

Fue watched MOriko with a nervous intensity. This whole exchange was so very important and even though things seemed to be going well, they could maybe still go wrong. She had no idea how, but this was her first time having a girlfriend and she didn't want to make the first misstep. Moriko was moving slowly and Fue's eyes flickered between the cake and the girl. Had it been damaged, it didn't look like it. She'd tried to be careful today so that had worked out. And Moriko looked excited at the idea of eating it. It had been expensive so that was really good.
Fur started to speak again. "Back home, there were some kids who made fun of me for that." It did seem a bit odd, to be named after a pastry, she hadn't been as self conscious about her name before then, she thought. "So when I came to this school, I thought I'd just call myself Fue and nobody needed to know. But I want you to know. Like, I'm not embarrassed. It's ok because it's you." She squeezed Moriko tightly.
She had fallen in love, if she could be sure it was love, with such a great person. And Fue was glad of that, and then Moriko offered to share. "Really? YOu want to share it?" She glanced around. "I got it for you though." But MOriko was insistent. Fue looked at the pastry, normally she only had it on her birthday as kind of a tradition. But there wasn't some law against having it some other time, and it's not like it would make birthdays worse if she had a bit of one now. But that thought was interrupted too as it turned out Moriko was far more aware of where they were and the coming rain. Fue looked up at the sky and felt a droplet of rain hit her, admittedly previously wet, face.
"Ok, together." she said and nodded.
~~~~
They shut the door of the sports shed as the first sprinkles of rain began turning into a full downpour. It had been luck to find one of the sheds unlocked and there was no way they'd make it to one of the buildings in time to avoid being soaked. Fue leaned over, setting her bag down, and took some deep breaths. It had been a sudden run, turning into a sprint as the rain actually started falling. She had not been prepared and remained a poor runner in general. The lights were off but a quick flick of the switch revealed shelves and rows upon rows of equipment hastily stored and not all that well organized. But there was room to move around and a few mats from the track team stacked up that would be soft enough to sit on.
"Oh man, I didn't know it was gonna do that." Fue said. "I should have invited you to somewhere indoors, like the music rooms or something." There would probably have been a few empty ones that she could have taken cover inside so it didn't feel as in public when she did the confession. "Sorry Moriko." She knelt down by her bag and started digging around to pull out her handkerchiefs. The first one she held out to Moriko and then she got a second one to start cleaning off her own face. Even before the rain hit, she'd been a bit of a mess. She then started to pat dry her hair, feeling a bit lucky that she kept it short.
"I hope it doesn't last all night, I wouldn't want to stay the night in a place like this." She looked up at the roof. It wouldn't be very comfortable." She didn't mind the sound of the gentle patter of rain against the bedroom window when it happened, but there was a big difference between soothing rain and the sound of rain against the metal shed roof. It sounded like a a million maracas all at once.
At the first heavy drops of rain, Moriko snatches up her bookbag and hastily slips the strap over her shoulder. Seeing Fue struggling with her own bag and the dessert, Moriko takes the box from her. As the drops of water begin to fall more frequently, Moriko throws an excited grin Fue's way. "C'mon!" she says, jerking her head towards the tennis courts. She's explored this school quite a bit by now, and knows of a few areas they could take shelter. They're too far from any of the school buildings to make it in time. Starting off at a light jog, she's careful about making sure that the box isn't jostled too much. She's trying to remember what's the closest place when the rain suddenly picks up. Increasing her stride to a run, she dashes in the direction of where she recalls a small sports shed is located. She tosses a few quick glances back, making sure that Fue's right behind her.
Running is something she takes great joy in. Especially in storms. The rush of the wind in her ears, random gusts pushing against her small frame, pulling at her hair and clothes with demanding, plucking fingers. The rumble of thunder, breaking the sky above and vibrating in her bones as her heart races in time to the pounding if her feet. The flicker of lightning, filling the dimness with brilliant light; each flash seeming to freeze the world in just that moment. Raindrops, tap tapping against her skin, sometimes stinging, sometimes soothing. The exhilaration!
They make it to the shed just as the clouds decide to release their full load. Snagging the door handle, she turns it and is rewarded with the door swinging open. Stumbling inside, she stands still, trying to make out what's what in the deep gloom. Her senses still tingle with the after effects from the storm. Suddenly, the lights jump on and she finds herself blinded. Blinking her eyes rapidly, she turns at the sounds of movement behind her and to her right. It's Fue, the door closed behind her, her backpack placed on the floor and her digging through it. Hair dripping wet, she glances down at the box in her hands. Her body had shielded it for the most part, but it's still a bit damp. And her dripping water on it probably doesn't help! Looking around, she places it on a nearby shelf and slides her own bag off of her shoulder to the floor. She turns around just in time to catch Fue handing a handkerchief out to her. Accepting it with a quiet "Thank you" she roughly dries her hair and face. Her hair sticks up all over the place, still a bit damp but dry enough to no longer drip.
Following Fue's gaze to the tin roof, she smiles at the drumming of the rain against it. A sound she's heard many times before, and one she enjoys. "I wouldn't mind if it lasted all night." Eyes dropping to Fue's face, her grin widens slightly. "Worst case scenario, we gotta make a run for it. But then we can take a hot bath, and it'll be all good."
Gesturing to the box holding the dessert, she adds, "I was mostly worried about the food. Would be a shame if it got all soggy before we could share it." Then she gestures at Fue, who's clothes are wetter than hers and which cling to her thin frame. Seems the sudden downpour had caught the other girl right before she managed to make it all the way into the shed. "Though, I wouldn't want you to get cold either. Hold on a moment."
Going to her bag, she crouches down and digs through it. "Ah ha! I do!" Rising up, she turns back around, a triumphant smile on her face. In her hands is a small pale blue towel, one she sometimes carries around if she thinks she's going to be active after class. Stepping close to Fue, she drapes the towel over the other girl's shoulders.
"There, now you can dry off even better."
Head tilted slightly back, bright teals gaze up into soft browns.
Fue frowns at the idea of spending all night, obviously Fue and Moriko shared a few different tolerances of such a thing. But it wasn't as if Fue ever wanted to go camping before. Moriko had probably roughed it harder than this lots of times, and in worse weather. Fue glanced back at the mats, they seemed like they were soft but they also weren't anything like a nice warm bed. "I guess a hot bath wouldn't be too bad after getting all wet in the rain. But I'd rather skip that part and just get right in the comfy water. It's weird how a shower is nice but getting rained on can be such a pain, I wonder why that is?"
Fue hadn't really thought about the dessert, in her mind, she could get another one. It was a distraction that hadn't been needed and would probably taste fine even if it was a little wet or messy. It stood as a bit of a difference to how they saw the world and food in general. Fue's attention was more on how it looked before, and Moriko focused on getting to eat it. But once Moriko had agreed to be her girlfriend, once the confession had been confessed, Fue lost nearly all interest in that little pastry and had wanted to hold Moriko and stay in that moment forever. Also to stop crying, that would probably be the thing she remembered most, the hiccuping sobs, how embarrassing.
"Thank you, Moriko." Fue stared back into Moriko's eyes and smiles. Her hand came up and brushed against the soft fabric as she accepted the towel. Fue leaned down to put her handkerchief away before she began patting down her shoulders. Why did Moriko have a towel though, that was an odd thing to be carrying around casually. "But, why do you even have this? Was there supposed to be swimming today?" But the school should have provided swimming towels for that ad this one was kind of small for a body towel. Moriko could be weird but there was almost always a reason, just like Fue, so there was probably a perfectly logical reason for it that Fue just didn't think about.
Fue sat down on the mat and wrung the towel out to one side before shaking it to get out the wrinkles. "Here, sit down." She said, patting the mat right beside her. We need to do something about your hair, if you let it dry that way it'll get super tangled and that would be a problem." She leaned over and started digging through her bag and pulled out a box. It wasn't too much different than a makeup kit, but instead of a person, it was mostly used for food. In fact, the reason it looked so much like a make up kit was because it had been one, before she repurposed it. From amongst all the other bits and bobs that were used to clean up her subjects, Fue pulled out a short half comb with extra wide tines. "Let me take care of it for you."
Returning Fue's smile with a grin of her own, Moriko steps back to give the other girl more room to move around. Glancing around the shed, she makes note of the shelves stuffed full of sports equipment. Now that the lights are on, it's easy to see how small the shed really is. All the objects on the shelves don't seem to be in any particular order, or all that well stored. But at least they're out of the way (mostly). There's enough clear space between the shelves for a few people to stand inside, but it would be rather cramped. Good thing there's only two of them!
Luckily, it seems that there's some mats stacked at the back of the shed. So at least they won't have to sit on the hard, cold floor. Done with her survey of the shed, Moriko wrings out the rather soggy handkerchief. Unraveling it, she snaps it a few times, trying to get as much water out of it as she possibly can. There's still a bit of room on the shelf next to where she placed the dessert. So she lays it out over the metal shelf, smoothing it down the best she can, so that it can dry out. As she does so, Fue asks her a question. Turning back to face her, Moriko shrugs and replies.
"Sometimes, I like to go exploring or running after class. I'll often get sweaty or dirty, depending on what I'm doing." Her eyes follow Fue as the other girl moves over to the mats and sits down on a small stack of them. "So, I bring a small towel with me to class sometimes, if I don't wanna to go to the dorms right after." She shifts her weight from foot to foot, her gaze drifting towards a small window. The rain still falls heavily, with the occasional rumble of thunder growling over the sound of the tin roof. She really doesn't like to go to her dorm room until she absolutely needs to. She's been scolded multiple times already by the dorm mother for not making curfew.
Suddenly, Fue shakes the towel out, drawing her out of her thoughts. Returning her attention back to Fue, she tilts her head confusedly when her companion pats the mat next to her and tells her to sit down. Luckily, her confusion doesn't last long as Fue continues with what she has in mind. Eyes lighting up at the prospect of having her hair combed, she plops down next to Fue with a cheerful "Okay!"
It's been ages since she's had her hair combed by someone else! Usually, she'll drag a comb through it once or twice in the morning and then just let it do it's own thing the rest of the day. One of the reasons she keeps her hair short is for the simplicity in taking care of it. And for the most part, it's worked out. But now, Fue's offered to comb it for her! Squirming slightly in excitement, she glances up at Fue, her teals shining brightly.
"You don't mind?" she asks, a little worried about imposing on her new girlfriend.
Is having her hair combed a part of being a girlfriend? Is it strange? She's not sure, but she does know that she really hopes it's not!
Fue was pleased that Moriko was so quick to agree. She shifted sideways so one leg was cross-legged and the other hung down over the mat. “Of course I don’t mind, I wanted to.” She frowned at the other girl’s mess of hair. Her own probably didn’t look all that much better, honestly. Neither of them kept it particularly long, though Fue kept her hair on the shorter side because that was the way her mama had hers cut. And Fue had wanted to stay as similar to her mama as possible.
“Now keep still, don’t go fidgeting, this comb wasn’t made for hair and I don’t wanna poke your head.” She wiped the comb against her skirt mostly out of reflex, it wasn’t as if it was dirty, she was careful to wash all her kit after use. “I mostly use it for long pasta noodles. But it’s something.” She started on Moriko’s left side. Very gently, she brought the comb back, several times since the tines were so far apart. She was trying very carefully not to hurt Moriko.
“Your hair is so pretty, I wouldn’t mind going a bit darker one of these days.” She said as she continued the careful combing. “Although, ma mere has red hair, like super red. Redder than you can believe. So maybe that would be fun, matching her for a little while.” She mostly tried to emulate her mama so maybe Alice would appreciate a little imitation too. “Do you think I would look good as a redhead?”
The act of combing Moriko’s hair was calming, in a way. She hadn’t really sat and combed anyone’s hair before. She’d played with dolls with she was younger and obviously her hair had been combed a lot like this with her parents. But she hadn’t been the one combing then. The rain kept drumming on the roof and filling the small shed with its echoes. What a change from this morning though, she had been terrified and scared of what Moriko might say. Almost terrified of the other girl’s reaction and now, well, now they were sharing a mat and she was combing Moriko’s hair. And they were going to share a dessert.
They were girlfriends now, that meant something. It meant no more feeling alone, right? It meant that they could comfort each other. It didn’t feel real, not exactly. She wanted it to feel real, to have something she could hold on to. Fue leaned forward and reached out with her left hand. Gently she touched Moriko’s wrist. “Is it ok if we hold hands? Just a little?”
With her other hand, she continued the slow task of combing, the inappropriate tool making what ought to have been a quick combing of short hair into a rather longer task. But eventually she did finish. “There, that’s good enough. Until you can get back to your dorm and do it properly.” She nodded and turned so both legs could stretch out. “Alright, let’s have some dessert now.”
Moriko shifts about a bit more, before settling into a fairly comfortable position. She can feel Fue's body heat at her back, close but not quite touching. A small shiver of anticipation worms it's way through her. She really does love it when she gets her hair combed by someone else! Stilling herself when Fue tells her not to fidget, Moriko tries her best to not to move too much. But, outside of when she's hunting, she's always had a difficult time of staying completely still. She still wiggles her toes inside her shoes and taps her fingers against her legs, but she makes sure to at least keep her head from moving.
Her curiosity is peeked, though, when Fue tells her what the comb is actually used for. So she asks, "You comb noodles?" Instantly an image of a person with pasta hair comes to her mind. Fue keeps trying to comb it, but the noodles are wet and floppy and they just keep slipping all over the place. Every time Fue tries to comb it out of the way, the noodles keep falling in front of the noodle person's face. The scene is so ridiculous that Moriko has to stifle her laughter. She can't help the slight tremor in her shoulders.
But then the sensation of the comb reaches her, and she finds herself calming down. The feel of the tines as they move through her hair is soothing. Especially when the tips drag against her skin, gentle but firm. Moriko feels herself relaxing, the tension she generally carries in her shoulders loosening at each stroke of the comb. She listens quietly as Fue speaks. The sound of the rain on the roof is much softer than before, the rumble of thunder completely gone. It seems the the storm was one of the quick mountain ones. Fast and fierce, all blow and bluster, but gone after only a few minuets. Now all that's left are the heavy gray clouds and the persistent pattering of the gentle rain.
Eyelids drooping, Moriko finds herself in a position she's not been in a long while. She's at complete ease with someone else. Someone she's come to trust and enjoy being around. Someone she cares about. Sighing in delight as the comb continues it's course, she feels a touch at her wrist and hears Fue ask if they could hold hands. Opening her eyes, which had fallen closed without her notice, she moves her arm back and slips her hand underneath Fue's own. Their palms touch, hers rougher and smaller than Fue's. Twining her fingers around the other girl's, Moriko leans against Fue. Tilting her head back and slightly to the side, she peers up at Fue, the teals of her eyes shadowed by half closed lids. "Of course," she murmurs, her voice low and drowsy. She squeezes Fue's hand reassuringly, taking comfort in the warmth that seems to engulf her entire being. She can't help the content smile that tugs at her lips. Wriggling her body a little, to get more comfortable, she facees to the front again, still leaning against Fue. "I think you'd look good in any color. But I really like the color of your hair. It reminds me of a fox. Like cinnamon and shadows and sunshine..." Eyes fluttering closed again, her voice drifts off sleepily. She realizes that her words don't quite make sense. But it's all right, because she's with Fue. Falling silent, she slips into the moment. The feel of the comb tugging gently at her hair, teasing out her usual knots. The rain, like tiny tap dancers, tip-tapping lightly across the tin roof. The heat of their combined hands. The gentle rise and fall of Fue's breathes. How could this moment get any better? Then Fue is saying she's done and starts to move. Reluctantly sitting up, Moriko blearily blinks her eyes a few times. She'd been so comfortable she'd almost fallen asleep! A huge yawn overtakes her, but it's not big enough to drown out what Fue says next. “Alright, let’s have some dessert now."
It just got better!
Snapping fully awake, she immediately sits up straighter. Moriko turns towards Fue, her eyes big and grin wide.
"Yeah! I'll get it!" Giving Fue's hand another squeeze, she releases her grip. Rising up from the stack of mats, she moves over to the rack where she'd left the box and picks it up. Pausing, she snags the now mostly dry handkerchief as well. Padding back over to the mats, she sits back down. Placing the box between them, she lifts the lid, revealing the dessert and filling the air with it's sweet scent. Moriko glances up at Fue, her teals bright with excitement.
"What was the name of this dessert again?" she asks, her eyes sparkling and anticipation clear. She actually remembers it, but really she just wants to hear Fue say it again. She really likes how she pronounces it.
"Ah. And how are we going to eat it?" she tacks on belatedly, for she's come the realization that they don't have any silverware.
The combing was nice, of course, but Moriko asked Fue about her passion. Sure it was int the context of combing noodles which sounded a bit silly, but a lot of what she did was silly. Making fake ice cream out of mashed potatoes seemed normal when compared to gluing sesame seeds to buns, painting chocolate, and using wet napkins to make burgers steam. "Of course," she echoed, "haven't you ever thought about the noodles in the photographs? When you have something like um," the first thing that came to her mind was pissaladière but how common would that be for Moriko who wasn't french and probably called it something more rustic?
What did americans have for simple long pasta? "Spaghetti bolognese. When you have spaghetti bolognese, it's normally just scooped up onto a plate, right? But you see it in pictures at restaurants or whatever and the noodles are curled in groups of loops or twisted so it looks like you can just twirl a bite with your fork with ease. Pasta doesn't do that on its own, it just plops together and tangles up like headphones." She'd had a lot of experience with that too. "So there are different methods we use to get it to look nice for photos. Sometimes people take forkfuls from the plot and put them on the plate like that, maybe untwist them a little, I like combing them out on the plate, maybe getting a nice swirling pattern, and then taking a smaller one, like a fork but bigger, to bunch up certain areas. Then you add the sauce over top to hide the parts that didn't come out so well."
The combing was nice, and it was nice to talk about her work. Especially with somebody who listened like Moriko did, and she was sure Moriko listened to this since it involved food. None of her other friends shared the passion for food, but Moriko did, even if it was in a different way. But the shared passion was just another reason Fue found herself drawn to the other girl. And hearing Moriko compliment her hair that way, something she'd only heard from her parents who didn't count, it made Fue happy, and colored her cheeks. Not with embarrassment, but with a bashful pride. They were holding hands and Moriko liked her hair too.
Moriko yawned and Fue couldn't stifle one of her own in response, just one of those things. But seeing Moriko shoot up at the mention of food makes her laugh through it. Even as the gentle squeeze before letting go of Fue's hand sends a pleasant tingles up her arm and right to her heart. While Moriko got that, Fue picked up her bag and set it on her lap as she pulled out a small bag for dirty tools and put the comb inside. When she'd gotten the treat, the expectation was to give it to Moriko, not to share, so she hadn't thought utensils were needed, but now that they were sharing, they probably should have a fork at least. Sharing a fork was...it was too soon to be sharing forks.
"A thousand sheets, mille-feuille." She said the name again as she pulled out two very fancy looking forks. They looked metal and they seemed hard and durable, but they were just plastic. "Try not to bite the fork, they're more for decorations and tooth marks would mean I have to order new ones." She said as she held the pair out for Moriko to take one. Her product bag was full of food supplies, her other hand emerged holding what looked to be a scalpel with a little plastic safety sheet over the edge. "And this is how we can split it without crushing the whole thing."
She smiled at Moriko. "When it comes to preparing food, I'm always prepared." She looked down at her bag. "Well, almost. We'll have to just eat it out of the box, I don't really have plates or anything in here but I have basically everything else." She set her fork and the knife down and put her bag down to one side.
Fue picked the scalpel back up and slid the plastic piece off it. She leaned over the dessert and carefully cut the pastry in as close to perfect halves as she could without measuring it. She really wanted to measure it. She was careful to make sure both of them got a slice of lemon and a bit of the almond topping. "There we go, all split." Fue nodded with satisfaction. "Let's eat."
At her question, Fue says the name of the dessert again and Moriko can't help the soft smile that curls her lips upwards. That accent! It's one she's not heard all that often in her life, but whenever Fue speaks in it, well. It sends a thrill through her! She's not sure why. Perhaps it's the slight shift in the other girl's tone of voice. How it seems to deepen slightly when pronouncing the words. Or maybe the way the movement of her mouth changes, her lips forming shapes that the Japanese she normally speaks does not make. Inexplicably Moriko finds her eyes drawn to Fue's lips, watching the shapes of the words she speaks, mesmerized.
Up to this point, Moriko has rarely heard Fue say anything in French that wasn't in absent passing. And never was it spoken so clearly and distinctly, directed right at her. Whatever the reason for her fascination, she's going to have to ask Fue to speak more in it! Maybe even teach her?
Moriko blinks out of her dreamy musings when Fue turns away from her and begins rifling through her bag. A slight blush rises to her cheeks when she realizes that she'd been staring at the other girl's lips for so long. But her embarrassment fades as her curiosity rises at Fue's actions. In moments, the other girl produces two rather fancy looking forks. Nodding in puzzlement at the other girl's comments about not biting the fork too hard, Moriko reaches out and takes one of them. Her confusion is lifted immediately when she actually touches the fork. It's plastic! She'd been thoroughly convinced that the forks were metal! Now Fue pulls out what looks like an exacto knife. Moriko returns Fue's smile with a reassuring one of her own. "Don't worry about not having a plate. I don't mind. I've eaten without plates so many times, I've lost count." Leaning forward a bit, she peers down at the bag. "You really are prepared!" she exclaims, a bit surprised. "It's like a magic bag filled with supplies just for food!" She flashes another smile Fue's way, eyes dancing. "Do you carry this bag with you wherever you go?" she asks, genuinely curious. She wonders if Fue's got her camera in that bag as well, but she's distracted from asking when Fue picks up the knife and removes the plastic off if it.
Bemusedly, Moriko watches as the other girl carefully cuts the pastry neatly in two, and then just as carefully distributes the toppings. It's this attention to detail, and the conscientious consideration of those around her, that Moriko admires in Fue. Finally, Fue draws back and proclaims the pastry all split.
Excitement shooting through her, Moriko raises her fork, anticipation making her scoot forward just a bit.
At the words "Let's eat", it begins!
Hovering over the piece closest to her, she slips the fork into the dessert, sliding it along one corner all the way down to the bottom of the box. Flakes of the pastry break away as she lifts the fork to her mouth. She holds her hand out under the fork, just in case more fall. Mindful of Fue's words of earlier, she slips the entire forkful into her mouth. Carefully, she slides the fork against her top teeth, making sure not to bite down, and removes the fork. A few flakes and a bit of the cream smears the fork's surface, but the rest of the bite has vanished.
The dessert now rests fully in her mouth. It's lighter than she'd expected. So airy and crispy! The mixture of the pastry with the cream is in perfect tandem with the sweetness that suffuses her senses. Chewing slowly and thoroughly, Moriko closes her eyes, to better appreciate the texture and flavor of the food. She can't help the soft hum of delight that escapes her. This is, by and far, one the of the best desserts she's ever had!
The expression on her face is one of pure contentment.
