Fue nodded. She kind of understood. She wasn't really good at any interactions with people she wasn't close to so she could sort of understand preferring to narrow it down to as few people as possible. But maybe it was all about upbringing. Fue hadn't grown up in a vacuum, she'd grown up in the world of fashion. Her parents worked either in front of the camera or on the designs to be displayed. They were generally surrounded by a large group of people. There was always something happening, be it an early planning meeting, a shoot, a party. But during all those events, Fue was just a kid and usually the only one there. Other models tended to not have kids, other designers tended to have kids of varying ages. Fue didn't feel comfortable around any of them. She just kind of...faded into the background where it was safe. Only to peek out when something came out that involved her.
Fue watched Moriko, she seemed so comfortable, so at ease here beneath the tree. Fue was a little envious of the other girl. Running was a work out, not a way to relax. Taking pictures of food was a way to relieve stress but making sure it was all perfect, fussing over ever detail, that wasn't stress relieving until the last moment when it all came together. Plus, it was usually homework and homework was never good for stress. Fue thought about her talk the other day, about new opportunities she had been offered. She looked down at her camera and ran her fingers along the case. Then she looked up to meet Moriko's aside gaze. There was something about her, something about how it all came together, the light, the leaves, the breeze. Something special.
Fue raised the camera. "Would you...I mean..." She was having trouble getting the words out. "Do you mind if I take a picture of you? I don't have much practice taking pictures of people, just stuff I want to eat but I uh...I think I'd like to take your picture so we could be friends." She blushed and looked down at her camera, breaking her gaze with the other girl. "It's...something my mama used to do in school. She has a whole album of the friends she made during school."

Fue raises her camera, her words and actions hesitant. Moriko stays silent, not wanting the other girl to feel pressured into saying what she wants to say. It comes as a bit of a surprise when she hears what Fue wants to do. Which, it really shouldn't have, considering her companion's chosen major.
Granted, Moriko doesn't have much experience with cameras. Her parents would snap pictures of her and her brother on occasion, but even that wasn't something that happened all that often at their house. Home videos were a bit more common, probably because her grandma loved using the small digital camera. Also it was easier to take a video of two very active children than it was to take their picture. More than a few of the family photos have a blurred Moriko in them because she just so happened to move right as the button was pressed.
"Friends..." she murmurs, her smile softening. My first friend... Eyes lighting up, she responds to Fue's question with an enthusiastic "Sure!" Her voice is much more cheerful than it's been so far. She twists her shoulders and head slightly, not breaking her current position, but just directing her gaze and attention more pointedly in Fue's direction. She knows she needs to stay still for the photo, she she settles into place, her contentment from the good weather and good company not diminishing in the least.
"Should I pose?" she asks, not sure exactly what the other girl wants her to do for the picture, but willing to give it a shot, whatever it may be.
Suddenly the wind picks up, a gust kicking up a bit of grass, leaves and dirt. It also tosses her hair about more aggressively. Without thinking, Moriko raises her left hand to rake her fingers through her hair in an attempt to keep the strands from whipping about her face. Her head tips downward slightly at the motion, her eyes falling into a half-open state. For a brief moment, with her eyes narrowed in the way they are, and at the angle of her head, it almost seems as if her gaze has become much more intense, even as she's distracted by the wind.

"I don't mean you have to or anything, just if you want." Fue added when Moriko seemed to react in surprise and possibly nervousness. Fue felt her heart starting to sink a little as the other girl's smile drooped. She didn't want to make the girl uncomfortable. They were kind of coming together really well, like friends, so she wanted to preserve that, she had just kind of thought that a photo would be neat, especially since this girl reminded her so much of mama. If Moriko objected at all, Fue would totally drop it in an instant. But then the joy seemed to come back, Moriko's eyes seemed to sparkle in the light.
"Yeah, friends." She grabbed at her camera, fumbling it as she tried to quickly adjust the focus to make up for the slightly different lighting. She didn't have much practice with pictures of people other than herself, almost none really. She preferred food, it was easier to have full control. Even now, she kind of wanted to make some adjustments to Moriko. Maybe a touch of blush, concealer, a dab of red, a bit of gloss. It was kind of a surprise how little experience she had with living subjects for somebody who grew up surrounded by them, but maybe part of it was that the photographers then had complete control of the models the same way she had control of food.
"Non, non." she said quickly, actually slipping into French. "I mean, no, you look great, just perfect." Fue lifted up the camera and looked through the lens. She was trying to capture a perfect shot with a person. The stress was high and her hands were shaking, not a lot but hopefully Moriko wouldn't notice. It was do or die, Fue lifted the camera to take the picture but the wind tore in. The shutter clicked and her camera caught several images.
"Oh shoot." Fue said, "The wind screwed it all up." She lowered her camera and switched to the viewing mode. If they were too bad, maybe they could take another. There were four pictures in total, the first had caught Moriko in a blink, the second was partially obscured by her hand coming up. But the third made Fue gasp. She crawle right next to Moriko, nearly cheek to cheek, certainly shoulder to shoulder, and leaned in, holding the camera up for Moriko to see. "You look amazing in this one. You could be a model."

That gust came our of nowhere! Raking her fingers through her hair, Moriko straightens up, her expression returning to normal. That is, until her eyes widen in horror as what she just did hits her. As seems to be the case far too often, she'd moved right as a picture is taken of her. Returning her full attention Fue's way, Moriko begins to blurt out an apology. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to..."
Before she can even finish her statement, Fue gives a sudden gasp and scoots closer to her. As in real close. Their shoulders press into each other, the other girl's body heat immediate and near. Nearly cheek to cheek, Fue leans in, holding up the camera for her to see what's on the screen.
It's a picture of her, but surprisingly, it's not blurred. In fact, it's a pretty darn good picture. Her teals gleam in a beam of sunlight that slants across her face, the pupils seemingly filled with an endless darkness. The rest of her face is thrown in varying shades of shadow. Her wind-tossed hair is pushed back by her hand, some of the brown strands glowing softly in the light that speckles the top of her head. The background it lightly blurred, the lines of her face standing out sharply in contrast. With the lighting and the pose she's in, it almost seems like she's staring very intently into the viewer's eyes. As if searching deeply into that person's soul.
"Is that me...?" she mutters, her voice filled with disbelief. This is by far one of the best pictures she's ever seen taken of her. And she says as much. "This is a good! Real good! No one's ever taken a picture of me like this before!" She's leaned in a bit closer to the camera, but Fue's words about being a model makes her draw back a little. Glancing sideways at the other girl, Moriko shakes her head.
"Oh, no. No... I couldn't be a model," she murmurs, her voice slightly apprehensive. A slight blush touches her cheeks at Fue's compliment, but her response it also touched with a bit of anxiety. Just thinking about all those people, touching her and trying to get her to pose. To do what they want her to do. All that attention.
It sounds like torture to the usually reclusive girl.

"Of course it's you, I mean, mostly you." Fue shrugged. "Like, the camera has a kind of magic to it when you take pictures, especially pictures of people. I don't really know the sciencey stuff behind it." It hadn't really occurred to her that this was an important thing and even if it had, they hadn't gone too deep into it. "But it's like how people see faces in toast or trees or they see shapes in clouds. Brains look for patterns and stuff." She looked at the picture and the intense gaze of Moriko. It was strong, but also you could see other things if you hunted for them.
"People's emotions are pointed back at them, like a mirror." She pointed at the half lidded eyes. "You could be tired, just disturbed from a nap on the grass. You could be intensely focused on asking a question or seeing something in the distance. You could be a lot of things, it's a really good picture." She noticed the other girl pull away at the mention of modeling. Remembering the conversation they just had about crowds and large groups, she tried to be reassuring. "My mama's a model, you remind me of her. Like, you have the same sort of carefree style, it suits you, I mean, it looks really good on you."
This was kind of awkward. She tried to shift tactics. "And models aren't always surrounded by crowds, especially if they are just models, some become stars of television and whatever, they get swarmed but a solo model can be a very personal experience. Just you and your partner if you work together. Mama has a big group but that's because she likes the crowds. All you really need is somebody skilled with a camera and make up and you." She looked down a bit less positive. "I couldn't do that kind of thing. That's why I work with food. Mama moves around and generally does a bunch of things and the photographer takes a bunch of pictures trying to find the one that's good enough. I like having full control." And while mama and mere were successful, she was failing her portfolio. It didn't make any sense.

As Moriko listens, she silently nods at what seems like appropriate places, even though she doesn't completely understand everything that Fue's talking about. Especially the emotions-mirror analogy. But it's still super interesting to her, since it's a subject she knows very little about. Despite the fact that she not very apt at reading people, she can still see how much Fue enjoys photography.
At the mention of Fue's "mama", Moriko's stiffens slightly. Pain flashes through her, though she hides it quickly. Taking in a deep breath, she lets it out slowly, trying her best to show that nothing is wrong. Her expression blanks out briefly as she tries to hide her emotions. Forcing her body to relax, she glances away and to the ground as Fue hastily tries to explain modeling in a bit more detail. She focuses on the other girl's words, shoving her emotions to the back of her mind. Where they belong.
People have mothers. They're going to talk about them. Don't get all worked up about it! She mentally chides herself.
Once she's back in control, she looks up from the ground and returns her gaze back to Fue. Shifting uncomfortably in place, Moriko gives a nervous smile. She hopes the other girl hadn't seen her sudden change in mood. Her smile tips downward into a frown of thought, though, when Fue mentions being unable to do what the other photographers could do. Shaking her head, Moriko can only think of how good that photo of her had turned out.
"I bet you could do it," she declares with confidence. "You've already got the camera skills. You just need more practice, is all." Her grin turns a bit sheepish. "And a willing model, of course," she adds after a slight pause. The comment about control surprises her, though.
"I don't know much about photography, but don't the best pictures come from natural events? Like this one?" She leans in and points at her image still sitting on the camera's screen. This positions her head to slightly below her companion's eye level. She peers up at Fue, her expression open and questioning. "Or like wild nature photos?"
Even when carving wood, specifically from a single piece, there's always the chance that the form you wish to bring out of it will morph into another. Sometimes, you just have to work with what the wood wants, instead of forcing it. Granted, that mindset could be from the fact that she's still learning the craft. But she does recall her mother saying something along those lines as well.
This time the sadness is expected and her facial features don't even twitch at the thought.

Fue didn't notice, not at first. The hesitance and sudden shift was more attributed to the idea of modeling and having people look at you as the center of attention and having a large number of people fuss over you like it had been previously. Perhaps she might make that connection at some point, but she didn't know enough about Moriko to make any kind of connection that way. Though it was likely to come up, Fue considered her parents a very comforting subject, she still wasn't entirely used to being apart from them and a large part of her goal in life was to for her them. Also, it was true, Moriko definitely reminded her of her mama.
"I don't think I agree." It was her perfectionist side coming out, the part of her that drove her to avoid people and work extensively with things that could be modeled and adjusted to the tiniest degree. "I mean, people say that and sometimes you can get a good picture by chance. It happens a lot, I mean, you look great in this one." She shook the camera a little rather than pointing at it. "But people tend to post pictures that look good. They show off their best work because that's what other people want to see." She bit her lip while she tried to come up with a good example. Fue's mind caught on to natural photography with animals that moved and twisted and were completely untrained.
"Like, for example, nature photographers might actually set their camera to take like one hundred pictures over just a couple seconds to capture a flock of birds taking off from a field. Then maybe only one picture is put in a magazine or loaded online to a gallery. That's kind of natural movement and a natural thing happening but it's forced. You do everything you can to reduce the weird variations that animals have so you can get a shot off maybe you even set off a loud bang to get all the birds to take off at the same time. Natural things do what they want and you can't have any active control over it. Maybe none of the birds cooperate and you get a messy set of pictures. Then you've lost your chance for a good picture of those birds forever." She shook her head. "Food is better, things that you can control is better. I don't want to rely on luck to have good photographs." Even if it meant that her pictures were too perfect. You couldn't be too perfect, nothing could be too perfect. The teacher was wrong.

Ah good... Moriko gives a mental sigh of relief. Seems like her little slip up hadn't been noticed by the other girl. With Fue's disagreement, she just shrugs. To each their own, she supposes. She doesn't agree with the other's words, especially the ones regarding nature photos.
"I think that it's the lack of complete control that makes those kinds of photos even more interesting," she states, her expression thoughtful. "I like the idea that, out of all those different tries, that there's at least one thing that comes out 'just right'." She gives a slight smile, her eyes softening. "And 'just right' doesn't always have to mean perfect. It can mean: the best you can do, with the situation and resources you have at hand."
Again, she shrugs, her movements nonchalant. "After all, we're not always given the best tools and time to make something perfect. Sometimes, we gotta change what our definition of perfect is, according to the situation we're in." Adaptability, both her parents had told her, is a thing an aspiring artist needs to learn. Even when you've found your niche, it's always good to read the 'artistic climate', and try and adjust your own works accordingly. As a professional artist, it is most advised. Besides, you can still always create your preferred art on the side. And for the lucky few, there's always going to be buyers for their preferred style. But relying on such luck is not the best strategy.
Moriko isn't anywhere near the professional level, though. She's still got a long ways to go before she even needs to consider that kind of stuff. But she does keep her parents words in mind, even as she struggles to hone her own skills and find her own style.

Like, Fue could kind of see where Moriko was coming from with her advice, but it seemed wrong to her. Sure, perfection was hard to get but it wasn't like it couldn't be gotten on some things. "Well, yeah. Perfection is super difficult to get and not really possible with most animals and nature pictures." She shifted over and onto her knees so she was directly facing Moriko. "But if you can get perfection, you have to, right? Good is fine but perfection is better. Because it's perfect." There was the flicker of passion behind her eyes.
"Food is better than people." It was a thing she believed, it was easier, she could control it much more. "Ma Mère is pretty good at taking pictures of people but I'm not." It was a talent, or maybe she just had her head wired differently, whatever it was, it was a major difference in their styles. But they both shared a passion for making the subject of the photograph look good. "Food doesn't complain when you prod it, when you paint it, when you prop it up on sticks. I can make food look perfect so that makes my pictures perfect."
She looked at Moriko earnestly, "You said you liked my pictures. You do, right? They have to be perfect or else people won't want to eat them. If people don't want to eat the food I photograph, then I'm no good and I'm out of a job and I don't actually have any other things I'm good at." There she was, looking Moriko in the eye, leaning in closer with an intense hope, even longing in her eyes. Fue wanted, needed the validation, even if it was just from this girl she met today. At least this girl had told her that she was good once. That was something.

Moriko watches as Fue shifts to her knees and turns to look directly into her eyes. The passion in the other girl's expression takes her aback. It's clear to her that Fue cares deeply about her photography, especially with her brief bout of tears earlier. But this is a response on a whole other level. The intensity, more than anything else, is what catches her off guard.
She listens attentively to her companion's words. A feeling of guilt rises in her as Fue leans in close as she continues speaking, emphasizing her words with her proximity. Shock shoots through her at Fue's questions, her eyes widening with the emotion. I didn't mean to make her think her pictures aren't good! Distressed by the turn of events, she takes in a soft breath, not breaking eye contact. Holding up her hands she shakes her head emphatically.
"No no! Did not say your pictures are bad!" she stumbles over her words in her haste to dissuade such thoughts. "They are good. Very good! I like them a lot!" She licks her lips nervously, afraid of saying more. She doesn't want to do more damage than she's done already. She lowers had hands into her lap and clasps them together. Anxiously, she rubs her thumbs together, her worry clear. "Sorry. I didn't mean to make it seem like I didn't like them..." her voice lowers in volume as she finally breaks the eye contact and looks down. Her gaze falls to Fue's knees, firmly planted in the grass and soil beneath the tree.
And things had been going so well, too! In fact, this is the most she's spoken to anyone, in one sitting, in a long time. Contrary to her usual response when interacting with new people, she feels oddly comfortable around Fue.
And now, she's flubbed it up.

There she went again. She had lost control, panicked and gotten super serious and way too upset. She was lucky she hadn't started crying all over Moriko again. Small blessings and all that. But it really did worry her. It was starting to sound like Moriko agreed with her teacher. Too perfect, that idea that was too strange, too complex, too antithetical to what Fue believed for her to really grasp what it meant. She was being too needy, too desperate, and was getting too close to the other girl.. She was ruining what seemed like a good friendship.
Why couldn't she just calm down? But Fue knew the reason, deep down. And she couldn't accept good enough or a C any easier than a river could flow uphill. She leaned in close, she wanted, no, she needed to hear Moriko to say it again. Her face was heating up, the desperation and passion coloring her cheeks. "Do you...Do they make you hungry?" She leaned in closer, as if their closeness would remove any ability to lie. She could feel the warmth of Moriko's breath. Her heart was starting to pound harder, faster as she tried to meet Moriko's eyes.
At this moment in time, nobody's opinion mattered quite as much as this random girl who had stumbled across her beneath the tree. This random girl who was so photogenic, who seemed to like food. Fue wanted so deeply to appeal to the girl that Fue's bod felt ready to explode. It was shameful how needy she was acting, like a puppy desperate for attention. But how could she help it? This was super important.

Head jerking up from looking at Fue's knees, her breath hitches at the sight before her.
"Ah... ah..." she starts and fails with her response, her shock and dismay stealing her words away. Fue's face is a mere inch away. Close enough that she can feel the hot air puffing against her face and smell the candy bar that still clings to the other girl's breath. Fue's face is red, her dark eyes glittering with an almost savage light. Moriko's own wide eyes stare directly into the other girl's, their teal depths filled with confusion and discomfort. She can't seem to look away.
Moriko swallows, intensely uncomfortable. This is a situation she's never been in before, and she really has no clue how to proceed from here. Her words are locked away, her reply dying before it even reaches her throat. A feeling of being trapped rises in her, as if she's been cornered and has nowhere to go.
She leans back, away from the overbearing presence of the the other girl. She doesn't do anything else, though, for she's frozen in place, her gaze glued to Fue's face. Her heartbeat picks up, her hands clasped so tight that her knuckles have turned white. Tension runs through all the lines of her body. Anxiety worms it's way into her mind and she's only able to focus on one thing.
What is she supposed to do??

She was distressing the poor girl, Fue knew it but she couldn't let it go, couldn't drop the subject, couldn't go back. She had to know. Her heart ached and every fiber of her being longed for the answer. A small taste of validation, a small compliment in a sea of tears and uncertainty was her lifeline and she was desperately clasping to grab hold of that lifeline again. She locked eyes, her plain, flat, brown eyes reflected against the shimmering teal. Their breath mingled candy tainted air between them, fear, desperation, sweat mingling.
Moriko pulled away, Fue leaned in closer. "Please?" she begs in a desperate whisper. "I have to know the truth." She had to know that she had real talent. That somebody believed in her, somebody who wasn't just speaking the platitudes of parenthood. Somebody who could almost understand. Fue needed to know. "Is it good? Am I worthless?" There was very little between the two in her mind. But Moriko didn't answer, she wasn't answering. Fue's hands clenched the dirt, her fingers clawed into the soft earth and tore furrows along the grass. Her hands were starting to slide but she caught herself before she could lose her balance.
That moment of imbalance seemed to wake her out of her trance. She pulled back, shuffling away on her knees and back sitting down. She drew her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them. "Sorry. I'm so sorry." She shook her head. "I didn't mean to. You don't like to be crowded. I shouldn't have." She mumbled. She was losing it again. Dealing with people was so hard. It was easier to just be part of the crowd, in the background. Blending in and not making waves. But her pictures were so important. She just couldn't help herself. What a mess.

Despite leaning back, a clear indicator that she's not comfortable with how near the other girl is, Fue just follows her movement and leans in closer still. Moriko finds that she can't draw in another breath, so she holds it. Her heartbeat rises in her ears, the noise so loud to her it starts to drown out Fue's words. She hears the "please" and the "worthless", but the in between parts are filled only with her thumping heart.
Suddenly, Fue seems to slip, but manages to catch her balance. Her eyes finally break from their intense lock onto Moriko's own. Blinking, Moriko finds that she can breathe again. She sucks in a quick gulp of air, her heart still beating a mile a minute. Luckily, Fue has drawn back away from her. She now has space!
Scooting back a bit herself, she feels one of the tree's roots bump up against her leg. Yet she doesn't look down at it. In fact, her gaze never leaves Fue, her expression wary. Now that she's been released from the other girl's gaze, she realizes that she could have just run away. Yet, she'd stayed frozen in place. Immobile. Why? It disconcerts her. She could have left at any time, but she didn't...
Her thoughts are interrupted when Fue starts speaking again. It's an apology. Shifting uncomfortably, Moriko watches silently as the other girl's mumbles fade away. Fue has brought her knees up to her chest and hugs them, effectively making herself smaller. She seems to withdraw into herself, her attention to the outside world fading.
Struggling to figure out what she should say, Moriko licks her lips. Before any clear thoughts can form, though, her cell phone rings. It's a loud and unexpected sound. That, coupled with the vibrate, completely takes Moriko by surprise. She jolts in place, a small squeak escaping her. Standing up abruptly, she fumbles at the pockets of her cargo shorts until she's able to extract the phone.
Flipping it open, she stares down at it hesitantly. Glancing nervously Fue's way, she hits the answer call button. "H-hai...?" she asks weakly. It's her aunt, letting her know that the roommate matter has been resolved, and that she needs to come back to the dorms to finish setting up her room. At the end of her aunt's words, Moriko gives another soft "Hai." and hangs up. Closing her phone a bit awkwardly, she places it back into her pocket.
Gaze returning to Fue, she lets out a soft puff of air. "I... I need to go," she says softly, her voice filled with uncertainty. She turns to walk away, but pauses next to the tree. Placing her hand on it, she takes solace in the roughness of the bark. Looking behind her, she adds, her voice still quiet, though loud enough to carry to Fue. "I do like your pictures. I think they're good."
She gives a small smile, her eyes still filled with her hesitation. It's an attempt at reassurance, but of course, that's something she's never been all that good at.

They were apart now. Separated by a distance grander and far harder to cross than the few feet that it appeared to be. Fue's heart felt small, weak, the light seemed dimmer and the day far bleaker than when she had set off this morning. A hard thing to do considering why she had gone on her run in the first place. She held herself tighter, fighting off the shivering that was threatening to break out. She looked at Moriko, struggling to meet the girl's eyes. Then the phone rings and the gulf is split further. What is there to say now? Moriko has to go, even if she had time, Fue has no idea what to say, what she could say. So she remains silent.
Moriko's voice was hesitant, Fue could hear it in the stammer. She'd screwed up, as usual. This was why it was better to have a lot of friends. To fade into the background where nobody really needed you to interact. Or to be behind the camera, to work with things that didn't have feelings. That was easier. "Yeah." she replied quietly. It was a good time to go, to get away. Before something more unpleasant happened. Fue watched Moriko start to go from the corner of her eye. Watches as the other girl turns to speak. They are kind words, kind but not enough to bridge the gap that Fue put between them. "Thanks." she answered and burried her face in her knees. One person liked her work, and she'd gone and acted like a weirdo to her. She waited until the coast was clear and sniffed. No crying, not yet. What was the point?

Moriko hears the thanks, spoken in a voice that seems to have lost all the enthusiasm and passion that had been previously present. She watches as Fue drops her head to her knees and hears the muffled sniffles that come from the other girl.
She feels terrible. She's made this girl cry twice now. Just by talking to her. I'm bad at this, she thinks dejectedly. She's not had much interaction with all that many people throughout her life. At least, not ones that weren't a part of her core family. And for roughly the past year, she's had even less exposure. Her social capabilities, always a bit lacking, have taken quite the nose dive due to her most recent lack of regular human contact.
Unfortunately, this leaves Moriko completely unprepared for dealing with a situation like this. Her fingers grip the tree's bark a bit harder, the roughness biting uncomfortably into her palm. She's said all that she can think of. She's done all she feels she can do.
Her aunt's waiting for her.
Biting back a sigh, she swallow her disappointment and turns away fully. I bet that was the shortest friendship ever, she thinks unhappily. Without saying another word, she walks away, her hands shoved into her pockets and shoulders slightly slumped.
