“ Without music, life would be a mistake. "America?" Mashiro echoed in perfect English, followed by a slower "Co-lo-ra-do...". She wanted to make sure she was pronoucing it correctly. Normally she wouldn't mix her l's and r's but in this case, she seemed unusually conscious about it. Another foreign student. That was unexpected, and the pleasant surprise was evident in how the musician's crimson eyes seemed to cleam in excitement and a soft gasp escaped her lips. Due to Mashiro's familiarity with English, the fact that Moriko had an English surname completely passed the composer's mind. Unfortunately, her knowledge of American geography was far lacking, knowing only the state of California where she had family there. Still she figured it was another prefecture, or 'state', and it couldn't be too much different, right? Of course, since she asked the question it was only polite to answer in return too. But... "Ah..." Mashiro opened her mouth but then froze. Niigata was the correct answer, and was what she was about to blurt out. For that one moment, she pondered how to describe her situation, but then realized...there really wasn't much needing to not say what she was uncomfortable with. "Ah...well...I was born in Niigata. But when I was really young, my parents moved to Tokyo so that they could start their shop." That was it. No need to go into detail about birth parents and mixed up family ties. With a smile, Mashiro added, "Ah, if you are ever in Hachiouji City, please, feel free to stop by our shop, it's across the Hachiouji station, the Satou Confectionery and..." Mashiro blinked in realization of her habit, but continued with, "Ah...more business is fine, but...well I don't mind having friends visit too? A-anyways..." MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

At some point in their conversation, they'd switched back to Japanese. Moriko hadn't even noticed, at least, not until Mashiro slowly speaks out her home state's name. She's briefly distracted with wondering at which point the switch had happened, but then her attention is once again captured by the other girl when she answers her question.
"Niigata and Tokyo..." she murmurs softly, a quiet nod and direct stare showing that she's paying attention. In her previous musings, Moriko had completely missed Mashiro's hesitation.
The sudden smile directed her way surprises Moriko. But it's a pleasant surprise, and she finds herself returning the smile with a small one of her own. The memory of her mother is firmly locked away, the emotion that it had brought up already muted into the past. At this moment, she feels a slight happiness rise within her. After all, Mashiro is still speaking to her. She's even smiling at her!
Leaning forward at the mention of the confectionery shop, Moriko asks, her voice soft but enthusiastic, "Your family runs a sweet shop? That's amazing!" Her dark teals shine with her enthusiasm. Any mention of food generally immediately peaks her interest. It's also a topic that can draw her out of her usually reserved shell.
"Do they make cakes and stuff?" she asks, her face lit up in childish curiosity. "Or do they make more than cakes. Like candy? Or ice cream?"
Her questions tumble out of her quickly. Not quite rapid fire, but definitely much faster than she'd been speaking previously.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Mashiro nodded in confirmation as Moriko echoed the names of the cities Mashiro mentioned, only noticing now that that she had switched back to Japanese after trying to pronounce the state where Moriko had come from. But if Moriko was comfortable talking in Japanese, Mashiro wasn't in any rush to switch back to English. After all the gloom that seemed to hover over the carver, it was a relief to see her in better spirits, and Mashiro had to chuckle softly as she realized it was over the subject of food. "Ah...My family is the one who makes candies, both traditional ones as well as a few European ones. Ah, also, and a lot of chocolats too, my brother is really good at that." Mashiro said. She was relaxed enough with the conversation that she was starting to sway side to side as she talked. "Ah, it is my aunt and uncle's shop, the Shirayama Bakery, that is well...the bakery side of the family. Ah, and even then...they do more breads and pastries? But they do take orders for custome cakes." From Mashiro's skirt pocket, the sound of chimes in the wind echoed, fulling the room with an almost ethereal sound. Mashiro wasn't surprised by it. I was late after all, and the only reason why she hadn't headed to dinner yet was because she wanted to talk to Moriko more. "Ah...of course, as soon as I speak of the Shirayama's, Misha-nee sends me a message. I'm sorry...just a moment please..." the pianist asked, taking out her phone from her pocket wrapped up in its case of sky blue cloth strips. "Ah...looks like Misha-nee had some extras from class that she brought home for us. Sadly...that means I do need to head home now..." Mashiro said, smiling a little as she looked back to Moriko to explain. "Ah...Misha-nee...Shirayama Misha, she's my cousin, and she'll be running the bakery soon too." With one hand reaching behind her, Mashiro pulled down the lid of the piano. As she tried to pocket her phone again, an idea came to mind. "Ah...that's right, you're not part of the Music or Theatre department...you won't be around a lot even with your one class here..." The pianist mused, her slender fingers tapping her phone's case. "Still...let's talk again? If you're still interested about my family's shops, we can talk about that too. Erm...if it's okay...do you mind if I get your contact information?" Moriko is so enthralled with all of the images of the food dancing in her mind, that she's honestly startled when Mashiro's phone goes off. Drawing back from her forward lean, she quickly wipes away the slight build-up of saliva from the corners of her lips. Nodding her head at the other's request for her to wait a moment, she glances around the room. It's not a very large room, and it doesn't seem to be used all that regularly, if the dust on some of the counters is any indicator. Her attention returns to Mashiro, though, when the other girl once again begins speaking to her. Nodding at the other's words, Moriko's confusion about the sudden mention of a 'Misha-nee' is luckily cleared up pretty quickly. Which she's grateful for, since she'd been thinking about asking who that is, but didn't know how to insert it into the conversation.
Watching as Mashiro closes the piano and begins to put her phone away, Moriko realizes it's gotten rather late. She's been in the music building much longer than she'd expected! And, with all the talk about sweets, she's starting to feel hungry. Granted, it doesn't take much for her to start to feel hungry. But talking about food really doesn't help.
Slipping off of her stool, she tugs at her clothes, trying to straighten them out a bit before she takes her leave. They've become even more wrinkly due to her shuffling about on the stool. Mashiro speaks again, and then asks for her contact info. Looking up from her wrinkled pants, she stares in surprise the pale pianist.
"You want... my contact information?" she asks, disbelief coloring her words. She wants to ask if the other girl is certain, since no one's ever asked for her contact information before, but she stops herself. She asked, so she does want it! Don't ruin this chance!, she silently chides herself.
Blinking, she suddenly gives a small, though somewhat embarrassed smile.
"Okay!" she says as she reaches into a pocket and pulls out a simple gray and black flip phone.
A light blush rising to her cheeks, she murmurs, her eyes suddenly dropping to her phone.
"I'm new to cell phones. Never really had one until this one." Raising her eyes, her embarrassment obvious, her smile turns nervous. She's been at this school long enough to know that her lack of knowledge in this department is unusual. Swallowing down her nervousness, she flips the phone open.
"I don't have my number memorized yet," she murmurs as she begins to try and navigate her phone to find her number. She only has two contact numbers in her phone, placed in there by her Aunt. One's her Aunt's number, and the other is her Grandma's. And that's it.
"I'll find it. Just give me a moment," she says, determination shining in her eyes.
Frowning in concentration, her tongue sticks out slightly as she clumsily clicks the arrow buttons, trying to find her own number to give to Mashiro.
Managing to navigate through the phone's menu, she finds what she's looking for.
"Okay, got it. You ready?" she asks, looking up briefly to confirm if Mashiro is indeed ready to receive her number.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Visibily confused, Mashiro tilted her head as Moriko replied. At first it seemed like the pianist's gamble failed and she had upset Moriko, but a smile dispelled the confusion. But the tilted head remained, and even tilted further in surprise. Flip phones like that were rare for the girl who grew up in a rather wealthy background, and it was the first time she had seen one outside the movies her older cousins had. And if her head could tilt even more, it would, as Moriko admitted to not using phones at all. Still, she was able to get Moriko's number in the end, tucked away in the section of her contact list labeled 'Classmates'. Seeing such a list brought up complicated feelings for the musician. Sure, she had classmates who were friends in Tokyo, but they were through her brother Miki. The list, though tiny, were made through her own efforts. And it felt good, yet terrifying. "Ah...thank you so much...Byrne-san..." Mashiro said, bowing and then putting her phone away. "Ah...Well...let's chat again soon?" Awkwardly, Mashiro started to walk backwards. Farewells were difficult, and most of the time when she had to bid someone goodbye, she was the one standing in place as the customer walked away. At the doorway, the pianist bowed again, but with a slight, albeit embarrassed smile before skittering down the hallway, whispering once more to the empty halls, "Ah...It was nice to meet you..."
