Fue held Morko's hand tightly, relishing at the reassuring squeeze her girlfriend gave her as tehy spoke. She didn't want this contact to end, she didn't want to let go, for them to split up, to possibly say goodbye and not see each other for months. It was going to be awful. And more awful was the news that Moriko was giving her right now. No phone signal? And the only phone didn't take texts? She knew that Moriko lived out in the wilderness somewhere but that wasn't the wilderness, that was like some sort of isolation chamber. How did anyone manage to survive like that?
She had grown up in a city and spent a lot of time growing up being taken into bigger cities. Her Russian mother had grown up in a more forested area but Fue herself didn't have any clear memories of being there. Her mothers had mostly kept her in Europe for mostly obvious reasons. For Fue, living somewhere without tall buildings was already out in the boonies. The school, with its open areas and the city being so spread out, was already basically a small town in her mind.
Obviously, calling was better than nothing, but it wasn't as personal. And it wasn't as quiet as texting. Anybody could be listening in and if her moms heard her that would be super embarrassing. And she had no idea what to do about Moriko's family. But then there was a glimmer of hope. They would have the internet out there. "Oh, yeah, we can use chatting on there. Your phone could connect to it." She paused and reconsidered. "Well, maybe not your phone. But if you could use the computer sometimes. I could probably walk you through how it works so we can still see each other. And you can send messages like texts too. Or just emails and if they're with the school address, nobody is going to get into them and read them. It's like our own secret diary we can share."
It was like a whole new world could open up. If she could show Moriko how to use it, she could share photos. Maybe they wouldn't be together but Fue could go around and send pictures of the area around her hometown so that it would be like Moriko was right there with her. Fue looked at the camera and held it with her free hand. She always had a camera on her, usually it was her phone, but now maybe this too. And if Moriko could see the Fue's world, even if only after the fact and through a lens, maybe that was like Moriko could be with her all the time too. "I'm going to show you my pictures. I want to see where you live and your home too but I don't think I can teach you how to do that over the phone. But I want to show you France. Maybe one day you can come see it with me. We have hiking trails too, the beauty of my home is stunning. And I really want you there to see it with me."
Moriko might not like the city, but they could go further afield, to the vineyards, the coasts, or just the rolling countrysides of the boonies. She wasn't exactly desperate to go to the forests but Moriko would probably like that and Fue wanted to do things with Moriko that she liked. She wanted her girlfriend's face to light up. To smile, to hear the laugh. Fue wanted to revel in every moment of joy that they could share. But for now, she just held Moriko's hand and enjoyed being very nearly cheek to cheek here on the couch.
