She hadn't realized how lesbian the school was. She felt a bit encouraged, but also a bit intimidated. She was still functionally in the closet.
"Right before you snipe them, right?" she chimed in. A gamer of Keke's calibur probably smoked the competition. "I don't get why we're supposed to be attracted to them." Of course, she didn't add in that she wasn't in the first place.
Sophie got blushy again as Keke complimented her, resisting to urge to giggle awkwardly, "M-me, more? Nah, they'd want you. I mean, they'd probably just think I'm a drama nerd or something. You're a pretty island girl, a dreamer, and let's face it. You're going to make the next indie smash hit." she explained,
She winced along with her as she bit into the ice cream. That was the worst. Part of her wondered whether the animosity on the faux-princess's part was jealousy.
"Just frustrating to you?"

"If I was good at that kind of game, ugh." She had those kinds of daydreams though. Ideas that some jerk would come on the mic and talk down to her and then she suddenly went full tryhard and showed him that she was just messing around before. Of course, who didn't have that fantasy in whatever they were passionate about? At least she was pretty confident that her game would be amazing so that was the one she considered most obtainable. "I know, right? What's so great about boys, it's nothing but problems and then they leave you." She said that so casually, it wasn't as if she was parroting her mother, but the feeling was there.
"I am pretty fantastic though." She continued as normal and leaned back in her chair, straightening her shoulders and looking a bit more proud of herself. The effect of looking regal was slightly put off by her eating the ice cream which she could not make look dignified at all. "Super frustrating. Like, what's the point of it, anyway?" Love was a pain, and people just flaunted it around like it wasn't. Better to just leave it and stick to her computer.

"Yeah, that's fair. Hey, I bet you really got into Minecraft back when it was big." It was basically the closest that someone who wasn't really into programming to get to actual, honest worldbuilding. Well, at least making your own little kingdom or base.
She wondered where the part about being left came from.
"I mean, well. It's... supposed to make people happy, but..." she mentioned, looking at her, "I mean, when you really love someone, I guess you want to share it with the world." she told her, her gaze settled on Keke, a slight blush on her cheeks as unconsciously gazed with a bit of longing.
"I mean, your game is kinda like that to you, right?" she mentioned, sitting up a bit straighter, "I bet you can't wait for the day you feel it's polished up enough to show the world your beta, right?"

"Yeah, I did." Though that was almost exclusively on the school computers so it wasn't as if she had been able to really get deep into creation. It was all about exploring, seeing new worlds, with the general expectation that you'd never be able to come back to them even if you wanted to since they'd probably get deleted by some other kid who wanted to do whatever.
"They say it makes you happy." Keke said dismissively. "Like, ice cream makes me happy. I like this ice cream." She held it up. "But then if I suddenly became lactose intolerant I'd suffer later." That was love. Maybe it did seem nice at the start, but then it stopped being new and exciting and then it fell apart and caused a lot of pain and misery. But the comparison to her game brought Keke up short.
She looked down at the table and had to really think about that one. "I...guess." She really wanted to get to the point where her game was done, where people could see it and praise it. But then they might not praise it, it might not be good enough to take the world by storm, it might not be good enough for her to ever be satisfied enough to put out a beta. "If it was good, I would want people to see it."

"Hey, it's a one girl project, and you're taking your time to polish it." she told her, in a cheer up tone. The ice cream, its true, it made her happy too. But it seemed her majesty felt insecure about it. Not to mention her tone.
She leaned in just slightly, "Hey Keke, um." she told her, audibly concerned, "Did... something happen?" She slunk back in her chair slightly, in concerned sympathy.
"I mean... it's okay if you don't want a relationship." she mentioned, blushing slightly "With someone." she added.
"But... you're the only person I've seen that's so upset about it." she explained, "So... it's just, it makes me wonder... just a little. If that's alright with you." She didn't know how sensitive an issue this might have been for Kekepania, so she tread a little carefully when inquiring.

Did something happen, Kekepania had to think about that one. More accurately, she had to think about how to answer it because of course something had happened. It was a long time ago and she didn’t feel any real sting to it, but was it worth talking about? “Sorry, I guess I’m just, like, I don’t know.” She waved her hand vaguely before realizing that wasn’t very queenly and picked up her remaining ice cream and holding it cupped in both hands. “I didn’t have a dad growing up.”
She said it as matter of factly as she could. Like it wasn’t that important. And it wasn’t, right? He’d never been there so it didn’t matter. She’d never known what she was missing so why should she miss it? But there was an absence, there were hard times. “No big deal, but it was hard for mom.” Hard for the both of them, if he’d have been around, would that have made things easier? Would they have been homeless?
Kekepania stared down into her ice cream. “That’s nobody’s problem though.” She added, trying to blow it off. “I just gotta chill out sometimes.” People got together, people broke up. Sometimes it was mutual. Sometimes it wasn’t. At least if he had died, that’d be something, there’d be a reason for it.

She frowned. It wasn't super uncommon. But Sophie could hardly imagine living without a complete family. It was just what was normal for her. She knew it happened, it was just... something she didn't talk about with people. But no doubt Kekepania had seen her Mom's stress. Maybe that was why.
"It's... well... it seems like it hurt a bit. W-well, what about..." she mentioned, with a slight blush, thinking for a moment. Keke was cute... but there was no way she way she was into girls, right?
"What about... Steam? We're just dragging ourselves down now, right? You're looking forward to the Summer Sale, right?" she said, with a slightly nervous blushy smile. It was the first thing she thought of to change the subject to.
She hoped she'd not been insensitive.

"Steam?" That seemed like a sudden swerve into an entirely new subject, but Kekepania was a certainly ok with that. Her face relaxed some, this was definitely a subject she was more familiar with. "I hope they have a fun game to play for the sale but the whole thing is a trap. You have to plan ahead. Only get games you know you would buy at full price or your whole bag is filled with things you will never play and then you wasted more money than you ever would have said." She said and wagged her finger warningly.
"Being frugal is important but if you spend money trying to save it, the best bet is you come out even." It was a very dangerous line to walk. She'd made that mistake both in cheap games and when buying bargain clothing. The fixes, stitches, and repairs didn't always just cost materials, they could cost time too. "Fortunately, most of the games that catch my eye I can just watch people play online when I work. The early access stuff just makes me want to work on my own game harder."

Kekepania's advice seemed pretty sound. Her computer might not have exactly been a gaming rig - she ran more demanding games on the lowest graphics setting. But she played enough games. She giggled, "Hah. I still haven't played Cthulhu Saves the World since I got it last Summer. I think I just got it because I had a bit of Lovecraft on the brain, since we read Call of Cthulhu in English class that year." she told her, "Hey, maybe we should friend each other on Steam."
She relaxed a bit more, "I think I heard it, penny wise, pound foolish. That, and you get what you pay for." And now she was going to stop quoting figures of speech before they got out of hand, "
She smiled, "Hey, any you've gotten recently you really like?"

“Don’t know that one.” Kekepania said. Her interest lay more with creation and management type games over RPGs. “I still have my old copy of Sim City 4 on a disc I got at a garage sale when I was seven. It’s for Mac so I can’t play that any more.” She smiled. She had digital copies of most of the sim city games. Actually, quite a lot of her favorite games weren’t even on steam, you had to go to other sites for old collectors or pirates to get access to them and run them in weird software that simulated an older computer. It was amazing that a PC could be too powerful to run a game.
“Yeah, that sounds great. It’d be an easier way to talk to me when I’m working than just texting me.” Kekepania liked being immersed in the game while working on it. Even if she didn’t need to be, she liked to wear the helmet and see only the screen in front of her.
“Not recently. I got a game called Tethered not too long ago. I think you don’t have to have vr to play it any more. You go around a little floating island in the sky and order villagers to go around and do things. You don’t have as much control as, like, you know, I want in my game. You don’t design the island or anything or build the whole world. But you have a closer connection to the villagers and help them out.”

Her awkward flusteredness now 100% faded, she hapilly replied, "Yeah, I thought that would be right up your alley!" she told her, her ice cream now finished.
She nodded. It was an interesting concept, and she made a mental note to check it out herself. No customizing the island, apparently, so it wasn't Minecraft-like, as she would have thought it to be by the description alone.
"I'll have to check it out." she mentioned, piqued by her description of the game. She'd admittedly started playing a bit more games since she'd met Kekepania. A lot of the ones she'd gotten were on her recommendations, simply because the islander was the expert on them.
"Well, I'm about done." she told her, "We'll have to come here again some time."

Kekepania hadn’t eaten all of her ice cream but she was done with it all the same. There had been quite a lot of it, at least for her. She cleaned herself up with a knapkin and then stood up. “If you do, let me know what you think.” She tried not to let other games influence her too much but seeing people review similar games to hers helped her decide what the people wanted. But there were elements Kekepania would not budge on ever.
“Yeah, I’d like that. “I’ve never gone out with anyone before. This was really fun, thank you.” She had, of course meant it in a platonic sort of way. Kekepania hadn’t had many friends and she hadn’t had much money to go out with. Doing this, going places in the real world, it was nice to share that with somebody else. “Would you, umm.” It was hard to do the asking here though. Before she had been able to couch it as if she was repaying a favor. But this would be asking Sophie to come out with her again just casually for no reason. “Nevermind.” She looked away, trying to hide the start of the blush that crept up her neck and face.
