That admittedly wasn't quite the spin she was expecting. Sophie had played a bit of Minecraft when it was at it's peak in popularity - it had piqued her artsy side's interest, and while the interest had been passing, it had stuck aroung long enough that she knew what Kekepania was talking about.
"Oh, that's interesting!" she told her, "I was getting more of an adventure or social game vibe from what you'd been telling me before." She guessed it was a work in progress in her mind then, though she hoped that Keke didn't overdo it.
"Well, it's still a work in progress." she mentioned. "So that's not a surprise. You can't always pre-plan art out." said the girl who's art relied on scripts as much as Kekepania.
She looked to her friend's phone as soon as her friend did, though she clearly couldn't read it from the angle and position she was sitting at, "Well, she'll probably be on in the next hour or two." she told her.

“Well it is adventure, you know, because you’re going around and exploring a new place. You’re a new goddess arriving on a new land. So you know, like minecraft when you start with nothing but the goal isn’t to grow strong and beat some monster at the end, it’s to make a perfect paradise for yourself and your people.” She stopped and frowned. “Maybe animals, I want to have wild stuff and pets possible but maybe animal followers and you can be more like a nature goddess.” It was something she hadn’t exactly considered. But why not, maybe some player wouldn’t want humans at all, they did tend to be kind of a pain sometimes.
Her fingers slid across the phone as she switched to a different app that seemed to have a lot of writing on it. She opened a new file, typed in the new concept, and then pinned it to a small area filled with other pins. Obviously this was her planning board for the game, separate from the game itself. “There’s not really anything social though. That’s a lot of work. Like maybe people could share their worlds but letting other goddess players on could let them ruin all your hard work. I’d hate that.”
Kekepania set the phone down and looked at her character sheet. “I hope she comes on soon, I’m really excited. I’m really excited to play her too. It’s gonna be so much fun.” She smiled broadly.

"Interesting. Any signature animal you have in mind? You know, something you don't see a lot in real life, but would be cool to have follow you around?" she mentioned. Monkeys, exotic birds, there were a lot of interesting animals out there that Keke could put into her game.
She definitely had a lot of ideas. But hey, ZUN, Toby Fox, there were a lot of people out there that made a really great little passion project out of just their own ideas. Sure, it would take time to get the skills, but that's what they were there for. And then, an idea struck the Sophie, and her eyes lit up.
"Oh! I just thought of something!" she mentioned, a big grin on her face,"You probably need a VA for the tutorial person, right? I'd be happy to help there!" If only because she loved the idea of actually doing a VA thing for someone else's project.
After the initial burst of excitement died down a little, she responded to Kekepania's other concern, "I'm looking forward to the game too! I'll do my best to make sure she can protect everyone, like a good knight should!"

"I'm not really sure. Probably just stuff from back home in Hawaii, but maybe I'll google some extinct animals too. And probably some old mythical creatures and stuff, since everyone is a goddess and stuff, why not like dragons or whatever too." She shrugged and looked at Sophia. "You know?" Why waste the opportunity of a game set in the ancient times of raw, turbulent creation. The ability to create animals or alter them somehow was tempting but that was about a million years off in development time. She just had to focus on making animals exist at all. Then Sophie brought up a whole new thing, a new aspect of the game.
"Maybe? Like, Minecraft didn't have a tutorial, but that was really annoying sometimes too." She hadn't really considered any voices for anybody since she hadn't thought to bother with characters. And on some level, she figured she would just do it. But here was Sophie, offering help. "I totally wouldn't say no to it, but that won't be for a long time, I think." Some new ideas fluttered through her head, spurred on not just by Sophie's talk of a tutorial person but by her talk of being a good knight. She turned to the desk.
The trouble with a tutorial or helpful character was that they could be a pain, especially if they never disappeared. And having characters could mean clipping and other issues. She placed her hands on the tables and seemed to be pretending that she was holding little models of a character. "So player character doesn't need to be seen because you are them in first person but a guide would be. A real tutorial should be optional but you shouldn't be able to walk away. So maybe a companion." She put both her pointer fingers down on the table and moved them around together as if they were tied with string.
"So they have to keep up with you, but some players will try and walk them into a wall or off a cliff, so maybe they can fly and avoid things." She moved her left finger more freely around the right, keeping the same distance. "Maybe it's an air spirit, a servant or loyal assistant. And then she changes depending on how you play the game." Kekepania's mind was racing. "Not a lot, but her outfits and stuff. Maybe four types that mix, what's that one from the one game we were looking at. Good, evil, lawful and criminal or something. So if you become a warlike goddess, she starts carrying a spear and wears armor, and, wait, no. How would criminal even work?"

"Oh! That's a good idea!" she mentioned, "And little demon horns or a halo would be a good way to depict basic good or evil." Maybe that was a bit uncreative, but classics were often classics for a good reason, "You know, maybe just have a bunch of bits that show up on it based on your rating, sort of a mix and match thing. And the criminal thing? You could have a little mobster fedora hat; that would be adorable."
She thought for a few moments on the tutorial thing again. She thought again, for a little bit. She tapped her foot, "Maybe there could be little dream sequences you could start up too, right? For the tutorial stuff, I mean. You can just browse them at your leisure." She continued to think of stuff.
She shook her head, she was getting way to sucked into this right now. "Well, you'll still have to show me what you've got so far some time." she mentioned, with an interested grin.

“That could be cute.” Kekepania said, thinking about the little hat, “But I mean more on a conceptual level too, like, if you’re the god setting the rules, what is criminal? If we keep the hat though, criminals wear suits and stuff so maybe it’s like less nature and animals and stuff and more business and industry.” She began to furiously type into her notes, “Oh, oh, oh I know. Good and evil get devil horns and halo but also good is more white in the costume and evil is more red. Then there’s science and nature, nature gets cute flowing robes and stuff, like in those movies with the angels or seers.”
She couldn’t think of the titles or any of them but they had the weird flowing clothes that were almost translucent and seemed to look as if they were underwater the whole time. “But the science types get a cute little labcoat and goggles.” She set her phone down and smiled at Sophie.
“You’ve given me a really good idea, I’m definitely going to have to credit you in my game. Thanks, and I would love to show it to you sometime. There’s not much ‘game’ to see unfortunately but I’d be happy to let you have a look at what I’ve done so far.” At best, she could generate a bit of an island for Sophie to walk around on, the very limit of what could even be called a walking simulator. At least it was something. “Actually, she still hasn’t gotten back to me, we could go back to my dorm now. I don’t think my roommate is around.”

Sophie had admittedly been caught up in a little of her friend's madness. While she did know that Keke was at least several years away from being able to implement many of the feature she wanted to, the programmer's excitement was more than a little contagious.
"I'd love to see some time." she told her, with a grin on her face. She was honestly looking forward to seeing it when she could. Sophie had a wide grin in her face. She knew how important her friend's game was to her, so she was a little psyched to see it. Even if part of her knew it was going to be a little less than her imagine would claim it would be.
She figured it would be some other time, but no sooner did her friend suggest taking a look at it, did Sophie stand up, "Well, that sounds great! I'd love to see!"
As she stood up, she looked to the door, excited to go take a look.

"Alright, let's go take a look. I can't wait to see what you think, like, it's super alpha right now but feedback is important." And she wasn't prepared to let anyone just online take the job of giving her the feedback, they were all jerks and would want more to be done before they did anything useful. And they couldn't be trusted anyway. This was going to be much better. She began to pack up her notebook and papers. As she did, the doubt started to grow. Kekepania pulled her phone out again, "Let me just tell my roommate I'm bringing somebody over. Wouldn't want to be rude." She began typing as they left the room.
Then, after that message was sent, she pulled up her design notes and began looking at what she was doing before, where things were, and frantically trying to find a spot where she could show off the best things and hide the worst flaws in her work so far. Still, she tried to force a positive expression on her face and to hide the growing panic inside. It didn't matter if Sophi didn't like the game, the game wasn't finished, and games were subjective. But what if she thought it was bad? What if it broke while she was playing it. Even polished games broke and this one was still in its infancy.
Or worse, what if she saw it as a waste of time. Kekepania had been working on this project for years. She'd poured so much time and energy into her baby and if Sophie looked at it all and thought it was bad, or shouldn't have taken that long, it would be crushing. Kekepania suddenly realized she wasn't saying anything and chimed up with "It's not really a game yet, it's just world stuff so far. You'll just be flying around basically, looking at the locations."

Sophie wasn't psychic, but knowing the sheer amount of importance that Kekepania put into her thing made the silence (and page turning) deafening. The island wasn't her magnum opus, but it was her pride and joy. Not only that, but Sophie suspected it was her also a reflection of her own dreams. And what if she didn't like her dreams, even in an unpolished state as it was.
"Hey, I mean, that's a good start. Besides, who doesn't like flying?" she asked. A VR setting where you could fly around was more than she was used to. The truth was she really hadn't done any VR stuff before, so she had two things she could look forward to.
"Don't worry, I'm not expecting it to be perfect right off the bat. I'm sure it'll be just fine."

"Yeah, flying can be fun." Oh no, had she given the wrong idea, it wasn't flying, flying really seemed to imply some kind of intent or real control rather than thee flying Kekepania had meant. It all felt so hard to describe, but maybe Sophie did no what Kekepania had meant by flying. After all, she played some games, she probably knew what clipping was and noclipping as an extension of it. "Well, I hope you like what I have done." Her phone barked and she looked at the notification. "Ah, that's my roommate, she's in the library so I guess there's no problem there."
She didn't seem to act as if her phone barking was all that unusual. Certainly she hadn't mentioned any love of dogs to Sophie in the past. "We can probably set it all up in the main room, rather than us both cramped up in my bedroom, well, I'll have to be in there since I only have the one computer. But in the main room, we won't have to worry so much about banging your shin or arm into a bedpost or something."

Sophie hadn't often heard the sound of barking dogs for a while now, outside TV and Youtube. She quickly narrowed it down to the source - not that as she looked in that direction, she would find it hard. "I didn't know you were a dog person." she mentioned. Not that, aside from a blind student, one would be allowed to keep one here.
It made sense enough, though she envisioned Keke's roommate would find it humorous to find both her and Kekepania lying around in the main room. "That sounds like a good idea. Trying to stick too close together like that would ruin the experience." Of course,at least for that activity. She and Kekepania were pretty good friends at this point, but she wasn't close to her like that.

"I don't think I'd call myself a dog person exactly." Kekepania said. "I just happen to like them a lot, just as much as cats, gerbils, and any other animal you might like to name. Your text alert sound happens to be a kitten." A particularly cute calico she had found online and had hoped to use for somebody that she talked to ofte. Until Sophie, she hadn't had the opportunity to hear it much at all. "Someday I'd like to own some animals. Right now they make me puff up like a balloon and I can't breath though." Her allergies had always been severe and were the biggest obstacle in her dream of having a pet.
"Here we go, nearly there." Finally they were coming up on her room. Kekepania began to dig in her bag for her keys. This was going perhaps too quick, she'd show Sophie something but it wasn't like there was some huge amazing moment or cutscene that Kekepania could just pull up. No tech demos or anything. And besides, none of that stuff would really help, would it? Sophie was like a beta tester, no, a beta audience. So it was only proper that she saw how things were so the opinions were honest. But Kekepania wanted the feedback to be positive so badly. "Oh, umm, my room isn't the cleanest, so sorry about that, ok?"

Sophie cringed as she imagined her good friend puffed up and unable to breath. She took a breathe, "Well, you know, there's breeds out there that are specifically meant to be hypoallergenic." Chances were Keke knew that, and that was her plan, but she figured she might as well not know.
"Back home, I had a friend who's parents bred Labradoodles."
She smiled at her, when she was told that her room wasn't the cleanest. "That's okay, as long as there's not Legos scattered everywhere." Sophie was pretty sure that was a hazard that would close down the school until it was cleaned up.
She smiled, trying to temper her anticipation, looking at the door and waiting for it to swing open, once Kekepania did.

"Mmhm, but those ones tend to be more expensive and we couldn't afford-I mean, my mom wouldn't let me have a pet back home." Had Sophie caught that? Of course she had, Kekepania desperately hoped she wouldn't say anything about it. As much as she put on the airs of living fancy and how she was the descendant of a god, she really, really hated the idea that somebody might find out she and her mother were poor and basically she'd grown up homeless. It would be too much to bear. "And the school probably wouldn't let me keep a real cat either."
Kekepania opened the door and stepped inside, though she moved to one side and held the door for Sophie. "Aww, labradoodles are so cute." Once the other girl stepped in, Kekepania let the door slide shut. "My room is the one on the left." She said and then spoke loudly, "I'm home." and clapped her hands twice. From underneath the side table, there was an electronic barking sound and a small roomba painted white with black spots and what looked to be dog ears on a headband screwed to the top of it. It buzzed past them slowly. There was a muffled meowing and a thump came from the room that she'd announced was hers. "Sophie, meet Freddie the dalmatian."
Kekepania walked past as if this was not odd in the least and opened the door to her room. The roomba in there had already done the circle and was just disappearing under her bed. "And this is Ginger." this one had cat ears done in the same fashion and was painted orange with a few black patches along the side. As for Kekepania's room, it was messy. The bed wasn't made, the little desk was covered in papers and programming books. Wires hung everywhere and seemed to be strung up all through the room, but none of them touched the floor. The floor was spotless and completely clear of obstacles.

Sophie heard the 'afford' part, but chose to pretend she didn't, considering how Keke quickly tried to switch tracks. She'd seen through the Princess stuff long ago, and while Sophie might not have truly understood why she did it, she like Kekepania, and wanted to make sure she was happy. She turned towards the room, as Keke announced its presence, and was surprised that the barking she heard was electronic. She giggled a bit, "Now it makes sense." she mentioned, as she entered, "I didn't think they'd let you keep a normal dog here, at least if it wasn't a service dog." She had to admit, it was pretty cute, bending down slightly and playfully greeting it, "Hi Freddie~!" she greeted the 'dog' even scratching it behind what passed for ears. She followed the faux-princess, as she entered her room, seeing a second roomba, "Cute~" she mentioned, as she saw it, still smiling, "That's one way to get around school policies."

The dog roomba bumped into Sophie's foot and then bumbled off in another direction continuing its cleaning. "I keep them in different rooms because they don't always get along. It's a weird programming thing or maybe an issue with the sensors crossing but I like to think it's because they know that cats and dogs fight sometimes." She walked over to her computer and turned it on. The tower was big and one of the side panels had been bent off to make more room inside, it seemed that this was where a lot of the wires came from.
"I found Ginger in a trash bin instead of recycling, so I thought I might be able to fix it up, you know, another cleaner to help at home. Took some time but I figured out how to make it run better. Freddie was at a garage sale since he didn't have a charging dock I got him for a real cheap deal. He gets the main room because Ginger's sucker thing doesn't work so well even after I fixed her, so anything more than dust can cause her to get jammed and break. But she's a good girl."
While she talked and the computer booted up, Kekepania went to the closet and opened the doors, revealing where a lot of the wires were going to. Next to a small shoe shelf and beneath the mass of fanciful frilled clothes was a helmet visor combo and two stick controllers. The helmet looked a bit old and dinged up, and there were a lot off scratches on all three pieces of the VR set. She began disentangling the wires and pulled the equipment out of the closet. "Here we go. Sorry I don't have one of the new wireless models, haven't had the chance to go down to the city and buy one with how busy classes and homework are keeping me, you know." She put on a smile. "Oh, I should get some wipes, usually I'm the only one who ever wears this thing so I should clean it up before you wear it."

It… actually was pretty genuinely impressive. She hadn’t pegged Kekepania for handy with… well, she wasn’t sure what kind of tools that girl was good with. But a roomba was a relatively elaborate piece of tech, and it took some skill to repair it. Not that she was aware of the intricate details of electronic repair, but that’s how it struck Sophie.
Honestly, it was a cute story too, “Rescue pets are the best!” she responded. Honestly, it was all definitely cute. And technically true. She’d had a rescue cat once when she was little, and she’d loved it to death, “They’re definitely pretty clever too.”
She watched as Keke got the admittedly dingy looking (relatively speaking) VI things ready. She was admittedly sort of excited, since she’d never used something like that. “Oh, that’s perfectly fine. Honestly, I’m kind of excited.” She was looking forward to seeing it.
She looked at the frilled clothing, “Did you customize those, yourself?” she asked. Honestly, Keke seemed incredibly well rounded. Sophie herself was something of a jack of all hobbies, but not as practical, beyond her own swordplay and acting. tagged: x || word count: x || notes: x

"Mhmm." Kekepania responded as she went to her desk and dug around through the drawers for some cleaning wipes. She found them in the bottom drawer under a layer of dust. She shook them a little bit before pulling them out and opening the package for what was, apparently, the first time. The smell of artificial lemon seemed to erupt from the plastic and she made a face. Still, this was what she had and she needed them right now.
Taking out the first wipe, she began cleaning the fo read strap and anywhere else the mask might come in contact with the body. "It's all artificial intelligence, but it's like, really dumb too. So you have to come up with tricks to make the dumbness look smart." She was starting to feel a bit self conscious about the amount of grime or oil or whatever it was coming off the head set. Was that really all from her face? Gross. With her attention focused on the helmet and still thinking a bit about her animals, Sophie's question didn't immediately register to Kekepania. "Oh, I've always found computers and electric stuff to come naturally to me, wires and all that." She paused as she realized her mistake and her face started going pink again. "Some of it I bought, when I see something cute or that would match my status as Princess, I can't help myself. I must have it." She spoke as regally as she could muster.
"But, sometimes they need to be patched up or a little flair must be added so I do that myself. My mother taught me how to fix clothes when I was quite small." Obviously what wasn't seen were te multiple failed attempts that were thrown out or destroyed when they didn't come out as good as she so desperately wanted. But of course they wouldn't be seen, Kekepania had an image of perfection that she tried so hard to put up and maintain.

Fortunately, Sophie wasn't paying to a little lemon scented rag. "Well, if programming doesn't work out for you, 'make the dumbness look smart' is a valuable skill for politics." she giggled. Which of course, Kekepania could either interpret in royal or democratic context.
Sophie smiled a bit wider when she saw Kekepania puff herself up slightly as a princess. Honestly, it was one of her cuter traits. She leaned slightly against the wall as she continued to wait on her friend to finish cleaning. She noticed her friend blushing, though, as she thought back for a moment, and momentarily looked quizical.
"Hardware and software then. I thought most people specialized in one or the other." she mentioned. "Honestly, it sounds like you've learned quite a few skills." she mentioned, before deciding to play knight again, "I take it your house believes in learning a little of everything."

"Yeah, it's important to know what the common people go through on a daily basis. A princess can't become a good ruler if she can't connect with her subjects, and I'm going to be a great ruler." Kekepania nodded to herself sagely. What other kind of ruler could she be but a perfect one? She finished wiping out the helmet held it out to Sophie.
"Some people do, I figured out that I'd have to be able to work on both." The hardware parts of it came easy to her, like a children's jigsaw puzzle, it seemed so obvious how the pieces all fit together and how each piece ought to work. The software did not come so easy but it wasn't difficult in a way that annoyed her or made her upset. She enjoyed that part of the learning process. So she kept at it, learning and pushing forward.
"Alright, if you could step out into the main room and put that on. I'll get the program fired up and you can see what my world looks like so far." She sat down in her chair and then jumped right back up. "Oh, controls." She generally just used her keyboard so she'd forgotten. Kekepania dipped into her desk again and pulled out two dusty plastic grips. She turned them on and saw the red glow of a low battery. "Umm, shoot." She pulled out a black cord from the drawer. "This plugs into the uhh, the ears of the helmet, like, earrings, at the bottom part. And then the bottom of the grips. They'll sense movement so they'll match your arms and if you walk in place, they should be able to sense that."
