Operation get from cafeteria to the roof in the shortest amount of time possible: begin!
Paper bag full of food tucked under one arm and backpack tucked under the other, Pip broke into a mad-dash down the hall. As she neared the end, she dropped to her knees, skidding a good few feet. Miscalculating how far she had to go, though, she wound up slamming into the wall.
Oops. That was going to bruise later.
But she didn't let that stop her--she scrambled to her feet and kept running. She'd slow to a brisk walk every time she passed someone, of course, but the minute she was out of their sight, she would kick back into a sprint. She had to get to her destination with enough time left to actually eat, after all.
A few more failed skids down the hallway and nearly KOing one of the janitors, Pip had finally reached the stairs. She took them two, sometimes three at a time, almost falling more than once. But she didn't slow down--only picked up the pace, because she was almost there!
Taking the last four steps all in one leap, Pip slammed shoulder-first into the door...
...Which was lighter than expected.
She practically flew onto the roof, lunch and backpack both falling out of her hands and hitting the ground some feet away. Pip herself did a pretty good job of clearing the doorway, winding up lying on the concrete a good ways away from the door.
Another oops.
But hey, she'd made it! Grinning triumphantly, she sat up quickly, reaching into her pocket to pull out the stopwatch an--oh.
18 seconds too late.
She scowled at the little device, stopping it, clearing the time, and then shoving it back into her pocket. The scowl was only on for as long as she was sitting down, though; the minute Pip stood up was the minute she was smiling again. There was always tomorrow to beat her record, after all.
