Today marks the end of the fourth week since Yurika had went back attending classes again after she was bedridden about a month and half ago.
It was about a week prior to the seasonal autumn show audition day. She was aiming for the role of the protagonist Alice for the season’s Alice in Wonderland theatrical play. She was very determined to get the role to the point that she would not even bother having lunch on afternoon break, preferring to spend the precious time to practice. This goes on for days until she finally collapses. She was brought to the infirmary and was requested to take some rest. Even without the order, her body was too weak to do anything and she was bedridden for the next two weeks.
As Yurika lives by herself in the dormitory, some of her classmates would take turn in accompanying her during those two weeks. Sometimes the fever would get high and then they would call the school doctor for help. The doctor did once suggest Yurika to go to the hospital and inform her parents about the situation but she refuses as she didn’t want to bother her parents to come all the way to Fukui when they were all probably busy with their own lives.
Through medication and proper diet, her fever, headache and nausea had mostly subsided by the end of the second week. Yurika finally went back attending classes again. On the first day, her classmates were welcoming her with warm hugs, some even shed tears as they missed her presence in class. Yurika however hadn’t fully recover yet. The coughing hasn’t gone. During the first two week, her classmates would come to calm her down and offering to take her to the infirmary whenever she had a coughing fit during classes. She rejected their offer all the time. By the third and now the fourth week, most didn’t want to bother her anymore, what was left is just the occasional worried glances that some of her classmates would give whenever Yurika had her coughing fit, it’s seemed some of them had accepted that the Yurika that they used to know isn’t coming back and was replaced by another person who simply bear the same name and resemblance to her.
As to what happen to the audition. Yurika never really learn the truth about it. No one ever break the news to her since everyone knows that the audition is the reason why she had to go through all this, telling her would just be like rubbing a salt on a yet to heal wound. Though Yurika herself also didn’t bother to ask around about it.
The long black-haired girl was still sitting on her desk. It was second row from the back, right beside the window. Outside, the setting sun mixed its crimson color with the blue sky, turning it into a purple canvas with some dark patches of clouds. Class was over just some minutes ago and most of her classmates were already leaving the room. Save for her and Rokujo-san.
Despite being classmate, Yurika and Rokujo-san never really talk much with each other, then again, now that she thinks about it, she never really talks much with anyone else either. Most of the conversation she had with the other girls only ended up revolving around school and lessons. Yurika also doesn’t seem to know much about other girls, she doesn’t even remember some of her classmate’s names who rarely ever talk to her. As for Rokujo-san however, Yurika seems to have taken an interest with the girl.
Yurika believe that Rokujo-san is the total opposite of herself. She is a true natural. Rokujo-san not only shines on the stage; she’s also beaming with personality whenever she talks with other girls. Unlike Yurika herself who is like an empty husk that needs to be filled with another persona to even remotely comes as interesting.
Yurika’s jade-colored eyes occasionally glances over where Rokujo-san sits. She ponders, what was Rokujo-san had planned on doing by staying behind while most of her ‘clique’ already left either for home or the dorm.
She herself only had stayed behind because she didn’t want to get stuck on the crowded stairway going downstairs. She had put away all of her notes, text books and stationery inside her school bag which was still attached to the hook on the right side of her desk. The only thing that was left on her desk was a small paperback with a dark blue cover if seen from afar.
As Yurika was still able to hear a faint sound of conversation and giggling outside the classroom, she figures that she could wait for few more minutes.
Cold late autumn breeze gently blows the faint curtain before her, it’s seemed winter is fast approaching on the western side of Honshu, as if it was a sign that the General Winter’s army is already on its march from Siberia, ready to cover much of the northern hemisphere with blanket of white. Yurika shivers a little and readjust her beige cardigan over her uniform.
