i am not interested in fulfilling borrowed dreams ❝ How much trouble did her siblings get into such that Valerie had to react like that? Komachi tilted her head in puzzlement, but then remembered all the injuries Yuki had gotten from their adventures. Yuko was always exasperated, but Yuki always bounced back. Now wasn't the time to ponder any further. Valerie suggested a change in venue. "Well, I have little clue what to look for, so we can browse on our way out," Komachi suggested, spinning around as she tried to regain her bearings. "Which should be...that way?" The tailor pointed down ne tight hallway, then turned a bit and pointed down another as she mentally reconstructed the path she had run and where it would be relative to the front. "No, hold on, I think it would be that way." Now more confident in her bearings, Komachi had struck a pose as she pointed down (what she thought was) the correct hallway before letting her hand fall at her side again. "Anyways. What did you have in mind?" she asked as she started to walk, spinning around to quickly glance at the bookshelves as they passed by. "I remember a Lawson's near the where the bus stop is, that's an option. I don't really know any other places for a s-" Walking backwards as she spoke to Valerie, Komachi did not notice the corner formed by the bookshelves and lightly bumped into it. Caught of guard, Komachi froze up in worry, but the bookshelf held. She glanced to Valerie with a smile, then looked to her side where she could see the light coming in from the front foyer. "...hey! I was right!"

i am a flower quickly fading Well, truth be told, she was pretty much open for anything. Her nose typically to the proverbial grindstone, Valerie had mostly concerned herself with the patches of land close to her job and her school. But Valerie could hardly be called a picky eater.
Unlike the more animated Komachi, Valerie briefly leaned against the wall, as she sorted through the handful of options she was aware of. Not among these was a 'Lawson's'. Whatever it was, it was clearly a branch of some American brand. Either that, or a Japanese company wanting to capitalize on an American name the same way a Japanese restaurant in America might use a Japanese name. Valerie took a half moment to straighten her posture, but before she could inquire about it, Komachi seemed to spy it. She shrugged, figuring that was where they were going to eat.Her heart skipped a beat, as Komachi bumped into the bookcase, but she had a better view that there was no harm, and no foul. She couldn't help but grin a bit wider at the sight of her good friend's exuberance getting the best of her.
"I'm not quite sure what they have at a Lawson's, but I'm sure it's fine." she told her, in her usual tone of voice. "Shall we head out then. I have a new barrette I need to show off." Her smile changed from one of mild schadenfreude to one of gratitude, as much towards their friendship as for the barrette itself.

i am not interested in fulfilling borrowed dreams ❝ No blood, no foul, all's well in the world. Komachi waited a bit for Valerie to keep walking and get closer before leading the way out. "Lawson's is the konbini- <the convenience store>," Komachi explained, switching to English to translate the loanword. "I guess people call it the konbini so much that people forget the name," the tailor laughed. "That said...you're right. We're not in the city center, so they may not have the usual stock of things. But...only one way to find out now right?" Komachi grinned and picked up the pace, eagerly stepping through the doorway where a crisp breeze greeted them. She held her arms out so that the sleeves of her jacket would rustle about in the wind, lowering her arms and taking a deep breath as the wind died down. "Ah...countryside," Komachi said wistfully, pocketing her hands to keep them warm and heading out to the front gates of the mansion. "Well. Not really. We may be halfway up in a mountain, away from large clusters of buildings...but we're still in city limits and we're still going to a konbini." Just past the gates, Komachi stopped, looking out towards the valley, where Fukui City sprawled out below and up along the other mountains. "Fukui is no Tokyo, but...still a city, right?" After a pensive moment, Komachi looked to Valie again. "Has Valerie-san been to the countryside before?" the brunette asked, walking slowly now down the road, towards the bus stop where the Lawson's was.

i am a flower quickly fading Valerie felt slightly embarrassed, but kept her composure, as Komachi had to explain to her that it was a convenience store. One she'd been to - admittedly, there was the thing that it had been called the konbini so often that it had blurred. "Right." she replied, as she exited the small shop to start walking.
As Komachi raised her arms like a sail to catch the breaze, Valerie couldn't help but give a bemused smirch, as she raised her arms to do the same, encouraged by her friends free spirit. In turn, when her friend lowered them, she did the same. It wasn't imitation if you were doing it and they weren't.
She listened as Komachi explained where they were going, and then moved on to asking about the countryside "Well, not the Japanese Countryside. America has quite a lot of land, so I suppose it loses a little of it's charm when it's so common." she mentioned, crossing her arms, as she casually looked at the smaller buildings. "Or maybe it's a city thing. My hometown was... I suppose it was somewhere in between city and country, so there wasn't as much to get wistful about the big city or country."
She pauses, raising her hand under her lip as she thought for a moment, "It sounds like you might have a fair few happy memories countryside thought." While Komachi wasn't a 'country girl' in the spirit of it, her family seemed to have a certain practicality, and Komachi seemed to be the sort who'd like a day and a place where she could just run free and get away from everything, if just for the day.

i am not interested in fulfilling borrowed dreams ❝ Komachi shook her head and laughed softly, but then sighed in open frustration. "Not really. I'd still call myself a city girl," the tailor said, looking to the side again and into the valley. "I mean...I've visited some of the farms that my family owns. Back before dad was able to make them...super successful. Then again after he made it big. But I can't bring myself to say that I've 'been' there." A scowl escaped Komachi's lips in time for her view to be blocked by a building, the very first that marked the edge of the neighborhood. Komachi looked ahead to confirm that indeed the Lawson's was just a block away, and nearby was the same bus stop as before. "I guess it's just my pride that stings," Komachi continued, looking over her shoulder to Valerie and stopping to let her catch up. "Acting like I know all that and done all that when really I'm just another dumb kid. A dumb city kid who...I don't know." She shook her head and resumed walking, keeping pace with Valerie. "It just feels...unfair. Like I accidentally entered a cheat code or something." Komachi laughed wryly as she reached out to the handle of the convenience store's glass door, but remained still. "You know, I'm rather jealous of you, Valerie-san." There was no bitterness, but rather a sense of earnest respect in Komachi's voice. She looked over to the green-haired girl with a small, almost tired smile. "You taken care of a lot more things than I've ever had to, with your siblings and your other job and all, while still managing all the stuffs at school." There was a pause before Komachi finally opened the door. "Anyways. Let's find something to eat?" Komachi stepped forward awkwardly, unsure whether to go in first or just open the door, eventually settling on the latter and gesturing to Valerie.

i am a flower quickly fading "At the same time, I've never gotten the feeling once that you're coasting on family money." she mentioned, picking up the pace and closing in on the heiress a bit. Sure, it wasn't like she tried to pretend it wasn't there. But Komachi almost seemed like the kid of a run-of-the-mill doctor or lawyer in some ways. The sort who didn't hide she had a little extra money, but didn't really flaunt it. "There's a bit of willpower in that."
In a bit of a fanciful mood, she hoped a short wall, rather than walk around it - that almost counter as fanciful for someone straight-laced like Valerie.. It was only moments later that they reached a shop, and Komachi said a few words.
Valerie immediately stopped in her tracks, as she felt a proverbial twist in her stomach. Jealous... of her. She felt a tinge of indignation, and she looked in another direction as she entered wordlessly, trying to hide her frustration from her friend. Trying to pretend it was okay. Jealous of her though? It wasn't like Val had gotten much of a childhood - it had been pretty darn miserable and stressful. Why did Komachi, who had everything h- no... she was not going down that line of thought. She took a deep breath. Komachi didn't know. She hadn't told her. "Sorry about that." she told her, "Anything here you particularly like?" Despite her rapid regaining of composure, there was more than a small hint in Valerie's voice that she was quite eager to change the subject.

i am not interested in fulfilling borrowed dreams ❝ Coasting...that almost was the feeling that Komachi was feeling was it? Yet, the tailor smiled in return - it was a relief that Valerie seemed to understand her so well. Komachi turned her head in time to see Valerie jump over the low wall along the side of the road, and that smile turned into a soft chuckle. So, Valerie too had that sort of relaxed and playful side. Of course, she had shown that before right? Behind the smile, there was a creeping fear in Komachi's mind, the realization that for all the time she had been around the green-haired girl, she really knew very little. Or just not enough. Did Komachi not remember, she wondered. Or was she so focused on something else that she didn't notice it? The dark-haired girl was painfully aware that she wasn't the most sociable, that she mainly tagged along in the past. And... -Sorry about...?-A look of confusion washed over Komachi's face as she followed Valerie into the store. The tailor noticed how Valerie walked in, wordlessly and looking elsewhere, but before Komachi could ask the reason for the apology, Valerie steered the subject back to the reason why they were at a Lawson's in the first place. "So, it generally depends on whether I'm willing to stand around and eat or I have to be on the run," Komachi replied, picking up on the hint and heading over to the bento and pre-packed foods were, her usual wild grin on her face. "If it's the former, I tend to go for the small packs of yakisoba with whatever meat I'm in the mood for. I actually...don't ask for it to be warmed up." A nervous chuckled escaped Komachi's lips as they arrived in front of the shelves of the pre-made foods. "Otherwise...I grab a yakisoba bread and run." Putting her hands on her hips, Komachi looked to Valerie and asked, "What about you?"

i am a flower quickly fading Valerie felt no small amount of relief that her friend didn't pursue that line of thought. Though she knew there'd be a reckoning of sorts eventually - the subject was bound to be broached again at some point. For now though, she could hide from her past.
While it looked much like any American convenience store at first glance, save for a relative lack of English language, she knew the selection was different. She followed Komachi through the store to the bento section. Which... she wasn't super surprised. "Yakisoba Bread?" she thought, as a bunch of hot dog buns caught her eye. She grinned, and giggled a bit.
"And I suppose that's the Japanese version of the little hotdog cookers you see in American convenience stores." she explained, "Still, rather surprising. I would have taken it that noodles would have made the bread soggy."
She smiled, as she looked over the selection. It all looked so good, though she suspected it would be convenience store quality too. "Back home, they usually had pizza for sale in these places. You could order ahead and get a whole one, rather than a few slices. It's not as good as Pizza Hut, but it's cheaper."
"I've heard they call Okonomiyaki 'Japanese Pizza', though from what I've heard of it, it almost sounds halfway to being an omelette."

i am not interested in fulfilling borrowed dreams ❝ Komachi had to tilt her head at first, unable to process Valerie's mention of the hot dog cookers. She combed her memories of her trip to America, but found that she never went to a convenience store there or simply never remembered. A smile eventually cracked, and while Komachi accepted the green-haired girl's postulation as unerring gospel, the tailor had another creeping fear that there was a sort of...barrier to understanding things between them. Still, since there was no rush, or at least Komachi thought there wasn't any, she proceeded with her plan to get a tray of bento. Her head swiveled side to side as she agonized over having one with chopped hot dogs versus one with grilled pork before Valerie brought up the topic of okonomiyaki. "Well, I think the term in English for okonomiyaki is... '<pancake>'?" Komachi feebly suggested, pausing to switch her mind to English for the last word. "I was under the impression that a <pizza> is baked, while okonomiyaki is, well...fried. Like...how a batter is fried, so it really isn't an omere- ....<omelette> either?" There was a soft growl of frustration, half out of translation difficulties and half out of wounded pride for not pronouncing an English word correctly. There was no language barrier per se, but Komachi found herself at a loss for how to explain this. Thankfully, the tension passed as a grin returned to the dark-haired girl's face. "Okay, how about this? Let's see if they have some okonomiyaki on sale here go and get those instead?" Komachi suggested, peeling away from her current shelf and walked down the line, her fingers hoving over the edges of the shelves. "I'm...not sure if you know how they package it here...I mean how they do so in a conbini versus the usual off-the-grill, but they're wrapped like a past- ah. Here." Komachi cut herself off as she stood in front of another set of shelves near the end of the aisle, then waved to Valerie.

i am a flower quickly fading Valerie noted that her friend struggled with that word for a moment, but while it might have been frustrating for Komachi, it actually made Valerie smile a little. Not out of schadenfreude, but because it was a little endearing, actually.
She backed away a few steps, to give Komachi room to backtrack, though it seemed her friend chose to move forward instead, quickly finding it, "Sounds excellent. Just one little quick trivia bit. Back home, for some reason, every pizza place insists on adding pineapple as a pizza topping to the menu. That is, despite the fact nobody seems to actually like it that way. I don't suppose there's anything like that for okonomiyaki."
Of course, she allowed plenty of time for Komachi to agonize over what she'd put in her okonomiyaki.Mostly in part because this was a dish she'd only ever heard of. She wasn't entirely familiar with what to put in it.
"Actually, is there an iconic choice?" she asked. If you were going to have pizza for the first time, go with pepperoni and cheese. Maybe there was some equivalent for okonomiyaki .

i am not interested in fulfilling borrowed dreams ❝ Komachi was only vaguely aware of pineapple's controversial usage, but since her own personal experiences with the fruit was limited, she found herself unable to really comment further on its use with pizza. Instead, her hand reached out to grab one of the wrapped okonomiyaki, pulling it into the air and spinning it before catching it and showing it to Valerie. "The classic Osaka-style one has the thin grilled pork-belly strips, like this," Komachi explained, turning the patty around and glancing to make sure she was properly showing off the bits of pork studded throughout. "But as the name says...you can throw in whatever you want. Which is...I suppose what American pizza is like too, now that I think of it. But yeah." The tailor reached out to grab a few other wrapped patties, facing the shelves as she combed through the contents, throwing items from one hand to the other and hodling it out to Valerie. "So, the other common toppings are ocotopus, and squid, and shrimp...here's a vegetable one, and...is this American-style bacon?" In amazement, Komachi pulled a lone okonomyaki patty at the edge of the shelf with what looked like bacon on it, seemingly the last of it's kind in stock. With a collection in her arms, Komachi reorganized her haul such that her could hold it all between two hands. "Anyways. We got a lot of choices. So, which do you want?" Komachi asked, turning to Valerie to present the snacks in her hand as if they were a spread of cards to pick from. "Or... we can get them all. They keep pretty well, I mean, not going to spoil easily."

i am a flower quickly fading As Kpmachi spun the patty in the air, a brief urge to tell her not to play with her food came over Valerie. That passed soon enough, being a bit silly, all things considered. Listening to the options, Valerie looked to the Osaka-style one, reaching for it, "Well, if I'm going to try something new, it's better to try the classic first, isn't it?" she asked, as she reached for it and took one of the pork ones.
"As curious as I am, I'd rather try one first, before stocking up on them." she mentioned. She wasn't sure if it would be her or Komachi paying for her's, but even if it wasn't Valerie footing the bill, she didn't want to end up wasting food, particularly if she didn't like it. Not that Val was much of a picky eater.
She smiled, as she looked over towards the drinks. No doubt, it'd probably be the case that Komachi would pay for the food, and Valerie would for the drinks. "I can go get something to drink. Is there anything in particular you like?"

Komachi smiled as Valerie pulled her choice they way she expected the green-hair girl would, giggling softly as she put the remaining okonomiyaki back onto the shelf. That little bit of showmanship improved the tailor's mood and was practically skipping back to Valerie. "I usually get one of the bottled iced teas. The unsweetened black teas." Komachi said, skipping past Valerie and heading towards the refrigerated section. "Speaking of tea. I really should probably invite you over to my room and we can just enjoy some tea together. Maybe as a rainy-day hangout." Komachi paused as she put her hand on the glass door handle and looked back to Valerie, her mood suddenly dropping again. "I m-mean...if that's something you're interested in...I...don't want to drag you around again." Her voice faded out near the end, and she silently opened the glass door to pull out a cold bottle of unsweetened iced tea. "Well...? What would you like to drink...?"

i am a flower quickly fading "Tea sounds nice." she told her, "I think I'll have one too." She says, as she tells her, "I'll cover the food, you cover the drinks?" she asked. Splitting the bill probably was the best way to do it. Splitting the cost probably was the best way to go about this, she thought. It was a bit a pride thing; she never wanted anyone to think she wasn't picking up her share of the slack, financially or otherwise.
She frowned as Komachi did, and blushed just a bit, "Oh no, don't worry, that sounds perfectly nice." she told her, as she took a few steps towards the heiress, "Honestly, I'd probably just be watching TV if I went back home anyways." Her smile was genuine. She liked being around Komachi. She had a combination of work ethic she could appreciate, with a bit of a free spirit's breeze she almost envied.
She gave her a reassuring smile, before she started walking towards the cash registers.

It felt like a burden was suddenly lifted by green-haired girl's offer to pay for the drinks. Between Komachi and her friends in Tokyo, they never kept track of whose turn it was to buy anything, but now she was at a loss for even how to ask. But as the distance closed Komachi walked normally again, hiding her lurking nervousness with a jovial grin. "So, how about it then? Next time, just call and I'll go and prep some tea and snacks and we can just...chat about whatever. Or find something to watch," she suggested, adding on, "Actually...really. Just feel free to crash at my room. Knock and I'll let you in. My roommate is pretty relaxed and at worst, you're stuck in my room. Which I do keep clean mind you." Komach gave a Valerie a cheeky grin as they reached the register, holding out one of the bottles of tea and pointing it at the onokomiyaki in Valerie's hand. "Trade you?" i am a flower quickly fading Valerie smiled. Easily recalling the offer she made not one minute ago, she reached out and made the swap with Komachi. She walked up to the counter, pulled out her wallet, and handed her items to the cashier. "Well, I certainly can't argue with that." she told her. She nodded, "And don't worry, I keep pretty tidy myself. So don't worry about me making an undue mess." It would be impolite for her to make a mess of someone else's dorm room, after all.
As the cashier handed her card, and gave her corporately mandated expression of her gratitude for Valerie shopping there, a thought entered Valerie's head."Would it be impolite for me to offer to bring something as well?" she asked, having yet to master every point of Japanese etiquette. The last thing she wanted to do would be needlessly offend her friend with some faux pas. Not that Komachi was particularly stuffy about etiquette, but the point stood.
Putting her card back in her purse, she already had Rice Krispie treats in mind. Not that she knew whether she could find that cereal in Japan. But she figured she could easily find some analogue.

i am not interested in fulfilling borrowed dreams ❝ Komachi queued up behind Valerie, grabbing her wallet out in prepration. Her earlier comment regarding the state of her room was meant to poke at the (rather weak) rumours that the outlandish and piecemeal utility jackets that she wore in the workshop reflected a more slovenly home life, but it seemed that such rumours never went far. But as the topic moved to what she could bring over, the tailor shook her head and smiled. "Not impolite at all. Bring whatever you want." Komachi said, trying to tack on a joke. "Well, try make sure it fits through the door, right?" Once it was her turn, Komachi put the okonomiyaki on the counter followed by her card. For the brief exchange, the brown-haired girl seemed to stand up more upright and properly, returning the polite gestures of gratitude as expected from an ojou. Even after pocketing her wallet, Komachi seemed to maintain the facade all the way to the door, holding it open with a polite nod. It was only once they were both outside that Komachi seemed to deflate and relax. Tilting her head slightly, she glanced over to Valerie. "You're a good friend, you know? I'd...I'd be happy to see you around more. I do want to see you more around. I mean...soon the production we're working on is gonna be done and...may not be around the Theatre building much after just because of projects." Komachi paused, then sighed. "...Nuts. Argh, I probably shouldn't have brought up school. Sorry." She held out Valerie's okonomiyaki to her. "This is yours, right?"

i am a flower quickly fading The small change in posture went unnoticed by Valerie. While she wasn't blind to social graces, posture wasn't the first thing she'd be prone to noticing. She was mostly focused on a couple thoughts about eating, as one who was buying pre-cooked food was probably prone to doing.
Exiting alongside her good friend, She frowned slightly as she heard Komachi was going to not be around the theater as much, or at least not around her in class. Still, like Komachi, she wanted to be around her, even while classes are over. "I'd... like that. It's.... perfectly fine by me. Well... you're a good friend, you know that?" She mentioned, internally asking herself why she was stuttering on this.
She blushed a bit, giggling slightly, "Look at us here. Stuttering over 'I'd like to see you around more'." It was a good thing they were the only ones around - otherwise, someone might think something, "As for the school bit, it's quite fine. It's not a forbidden subject." She took the snack she was given, "It is, thank you."
She smiled, "Well, shall we head back, friend?"

i am not interested in fulfilling borrowed dreams ❝ Seeing Valerie blush confused Komachi for a few moments as the tailor mentally replayed her last words. As the gears turn, Komachi began to blush every so slightly in embarrassment as well. Being the accidental flirt was supposed to be Micchan's job, right? And that was an accident, with no other subconcious ulterior motives or subtly hinted desires. Surely that was just an awkardly-worded request totally referring to some other thing. Right? "Yeah..." Komachi reflexively replied as Valerie took the okonomiyaki from her, repeating herself again in a more cheery tone as her mind returned back to Earth. "Yeah! That's a good idea. I've had my fill of adventure for the day. And...thanks for coming with me today." Eagerly wanting to drown her embarrassment with food, Komachi unwrapped her okonomiyaki as she walked towards the bus stop where they were dropped off, tossing the wrapper in the nearby trash can as they approached the covered shelter of the bus stop. In the distance, she could catch a glimpse of a bus heading downhill towards their stop, flickering in and out of view between the trees and the bends in the road. Despite being visible, the windy mountain roads meant that it would still be a while before it arrived. Komachi glanced over to Valerie as she started to open her bottle of tea. Her eyes were drawn immediately to the barrette in Valerie's hair, the floral monochrome contrasting the verdant colour. "You know...I got an idea," the tailor said, starting to grin. "Admittedly, with the barrette you got...what if...I make an outfit for you themed with that? I'll make it an ongoing project, like what I do with Yuki." Of course - with an ongoing project, Komachi had all the reason to keep in touch, right?

i am a flower quickly fading Valerie followed suit, taking her own food's wrapper off. Sitting down by the heiress, she was just about to take a bit when her friend made a big offer, causing her to blush again. Not just because it was sweet of Komachi, but just... that was pretty big "A-ah, that's a pretty big offer. It would be very kind of you to do so." she mentioned. Valerie had a few name-brand items, but much of it was out of the thrift store. She immediately felt the pang of being indebted to someone, even if Komachi certainly wasn't one to hold it above her head, or even expect it to be repaid.
"I mean, you certainly don't have to. Not that it wouldn't be appreciated." she told her. Of course, she wanted it. "Is there anything I can do for-" she caught herself, given the previous concern of her friend. Her mind went to something. She smiled, as she thought of an idea. Maybe she could find something to do. Something fun.
She took a deep breath, "Sorry, you know how I get. But..." she blushed again, "It's really sweet of you to do that for me."
