Minako let out a big yawn as she entered the grocery store one evening. The automatic doors hummed as they spread for her and she wandered in. She was here for a few things, but she usually stopped by to pick up dinners anyway. Not bothering with cooking much in the evenings, Minako tended to just pick up something premade for the sake of ease. Cooking was just such a hassle after a long day of teaching. She bought lunches too, usually something small to just scarf down on her break. Breakfast was the only thing she really put any effort into. She needed a good breakfast to get through the day, after all.
The mixed scent of different produce met her nose as she entered. She needed more than just dinner today so she didn't head straight to the premade section and instead headed off down the isles to hunt down items. Should she have grabbed a cart? Hmm, maybe she needed one, but she wasn't sure. Well, she could always go back for one if she had to. She did need to get several things though. Maybe a basket at least. Minako sigh. She turned around and headed back to the entrance where she could grab a basket.
Not equipped with the proper shopping tools, Minako headed back into the store and wandered about the isles. Where did they keep soy sauce again? She could never remember these things. It wasn't like she ran out fast, so her brain wasn't bothered with the effort of remembering little details like that. It was really annoying when she needed to find it again though. She wandered into the next isle. Eh, around here maybe? You know, they should just have employees you handed a list to and they went and grabbed it all for you. Now that would be great. More jobs for people to be employed for, and less work for Minako. She turned around the end and walked down the adjacent isle. Here maybe? Wait, salted seaweed? No, this couldn't be the right isle... Did she need salted seaweed? What would she use it for? When was the last time she'd even ate seaweed? Minako shook her head and moved on.

They say that in Navy, the food is mighty great. You can chow down at seven, and it'll come back up at eight.
Or so the song went. Thankfully, Estelle was not particularly picky even though for much of her life she didn't have much of a choice when it came to meals. That changed once she retired and found herself having to cook for herself more and more often. Not that she was incapable by any means nor that what she ate wasn't nutritious, but there was very little variety overall in Estelle's meals.
Late days were rare but not unheard for the head nurse. Documentation, as grueling as it was, had value in at least protecting her from nosy interlopers and administrators trying to pass the buck. But it did meant that Estelle's trip to the grocery store was later than usual. Without looking, Estelle had grabbed herself a basket and headed immediately towards the produce section.
Some carrots, some lettuce, some tomatoes, some cucumber, then some onions this time around. What else did she need? Rice? Or maybe bread this time? How about meats? Despite the late evening Estelle found herself with little appetite and even less of an idea what to cook. Maybe some thinly-sliced meats so that she could use the teppanyaki grill that Kiriko and Alicia gifted her.
Estelle pivoted smartly in her boots, heading towards the meat section. Unsurprisingly, there were few people in the store, being just past the end-of-workday rush, yet a surprising visage caught her eye. Rarely did Estelle get to talk to her colleagues at work, and even less outside of it. But curiosity simmered in the back of Estelle's mind as she closed the gap, speaking out softly.
"Good evening, Ishiyama-san," Estelle said with a chuckle, holding her basket at the side. "Wandering a bit?"

Minako wandered around toward the meat section. Did she need any meat? Maybe she should grab some more for breakfast. Looking around at the different cuts of various meats, she paused to look at a giant slab of pork. That was a loooot of meat. She could probably eat for a month off of that. Though she'd probably have to turn it into jerky or something like that to have it even last that long. Could you even turn pork into jerky? There was beef jerky, but she couldn't recall hearing about pork jerky before. If they could make beef into jerky, then why not pork? It had to be a thing. And what about fish jerky?
Why was she even thinking about jerky, she'd never even had it before. Oh right, the large chunk of pork.
Pushing jerky from her mind, she started moving on when she heard someone say her name.
"Eh?" Minako turned around to find Estelle Tambling, the school nurse standing there, "Oh, Tanburingu-san, you shop here too?" she asked. Minako usually came here but it was the first time she'd seen Estelle. Minako stood up straight and rubbed the back of her head.
"I just came in here for a few things, but I guess I am wandering a bit. Don't know why, I always just get the same stuff anyway." she answered. Her eyes glanced down at Estelle's basket full of veggies, "What about you? You seem to have a plan in mind."

Estelled reflexively raised an eyebrow in amusement as she approached. For all the years outside of her previous career, it was still jarring to hear her name render phonetically in Japanese. Most of the time she had been referred to by her rank or title. And even then, those who called out to her did so in English.
"Well, I do have plans, but it's the same sort of plans every time," the head nurse said with a slight chuckle. She walked past Minako and stood in front of the refridgerated shelves in front of them, looking side to side as she spoke."Ironic isn't? We live in a land of plenty and yet when a plethora of choices is handed out before us, we know very little to do. I wonder, is there a Japanese translation for an 'embarrassment of riches'?"
A mischievous grin spread across Estelle's face as she picked through the tightly-sealed packages of thinly-sliced meat, though it lightened up with a sigh and a shake of the head. "Good grief...must these all be so large?" she asked, starting to laugh. "I could cook one of these and be set for weeks. Not that I would be particularly complaining. I suppose these were packed for families in mind, not for us."
Into the basket went the smallest package of thin-sliced pork Estelle could find, followed by a similar package of beef. Estelle shook her head and sighed again. Sure, she had a freezer, but it felt like a waste to cook so much then put freeze immediately.
"Hm...is that all...?" Estelle mused out loud before looking to Minako. "Now that I think of it, I ought to ask you what you would get. I've been running around cooking things in a Western style, or relying on what tidbits my old friends have told me."
