“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Mashiro never fancied the role of a teacher. She admired them, but did not envy the position. If Mashiro was to be a teacher, the pale-haired girl expected it to be related to music, not Japanese. But the same problem remained: translation. Though neat and orderly, Mashiro's notes on music were written in a way that was incomprehensible to anyone else. And in a way, that was how her mind worked as well, taking whatever information from the outside and translating it into her own terms. Could she do the opposite? Hopefully. And hopefully and anxiously did Mashiro look out towards the doorway of the library study room she was in. Even now, she questioned why she accepted Ellie's request to help her with Japanese. But maybe it wasn't really for the tutoring that the pianist accepted. Though she was on good terms with more or less all her classmates (the incident regarding ghosts aside), there was still a painful distance between them. Not so much for Ellie, for reasons beyond Mashiro's understanding. Best to simply take the opportunity to be with a friend. Winter had finally relented and Spring had crept in bit by bit. The early sunsets were replaced by sunny afternoons that filled the study room with a warm and welcoming light. On the table was Mashiro's books and papers, homework that was more or less finished. If nothing else, Mashiro was diligent; part of why she could afford this time was her penchant for doing her homework early. Beneath the window, still in its worn case, was Mashiro's keyboard. She had brought it with her out of habit, but obvious a library was no place for an impromptu concert. Sighing worriedly, Mashiro took out her phone, wrapped still in it's worn cloth casing. It was still early, by design. In her anxiety, Mashiro made a beeline for the library as soon as classes had ended, and it by some miracle that she was able to convert her tense state into enough focus to do her homework in the meantime. Idly thought brought the musician to a realization. She had no need to take Japanese language classes, so started to wonder how it would be taught at a high school level. And then, her mind shifted to Ellie's Kansai accent. She could understand it for the most part, but Mashiro wondered if there was anything that needed to be done regarding it. With worried thoughts threatening to overtake her, Mashiro got up from her seat and set up her keyboard, facing the doorway. Though it was turned off and no sound came from the keyboard, save for the the thumbing of the pastic keys against the plastic chassis, the musican could mentally hear the melody that would have filled the air. Finally, in this period of waiting, Mashiro was able to relax. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

She's gotten caught up in conversation with a few girls from class and doesn't realize how much time has passed. Fortunately, she'd set an alarm on her phone to remind her 5 minuets before she's supposed to meet Mashiro at the library. In the middle of a bout of group laughter, the alarm chimes. Taking out her phone, Ellie turns off the alarm and smiles cheerfully at the girls. Extracting herself from the group, she bids them farewell, and with a quick wave, darts off in the direction of the library. Puffing slightly, Ellie slows down from her light jog. Brushing some loose strands of hair out of her face, she enters the library, being sure not to make too much noise. Her hair is tied back into a loose ponytail, a bit messy from her run. Slung over her shoulder is the school issue bookbag, packed mostly with her Japanese literature class assignments. She's wearing the school uniform, the skirt falling right to her knees and easily showing off her shapely legs. Thankfully, it's finally started getting warmer during the daylight hours! She's not wearing anything heavy, though tied around her waist is a light jacket for the evenings. And inside her bookbag is her hat and scarf, just in case.
It's a good thing that she'd prepared beforehand, for if she hadn't brought her extra Japanese literature work with her, she'd of had to go back to her dorm room. That would have made her late, without a doubt! Ellie generally tries to always be prepared, though, and she had made it with a few minuets to spare! Face slightly flush from exertion, she sweeps her eyes around the room, looking for Mashiro. She's not sitting at any of the tables in the front, so she moves away from the entrance and towards the study room area.
"<Ah, there she is!>" she murmurs to herself as she spots the distinct white hair and pale features of her tutor. The other girl is sitting in one of the study rooms. She can see her clearly through the open door. A keyboard is set before her and it seems as if she's become absorbed in playing it, despite no sound coming from it. Rather impressed by how Mashiro is working hard at her craft, even now, Ellie approaches quietly, not wanting to startle the other girl. Striding towards the study room entrance, she raps lightly at the door frame, announcing her presence just in case Mashiro hadn't seen her arrival.
"Now that's dedication!", she softly exclaims, her tone teasing but admiration clear.
Leaning against the door frame, she directs a friendly smile the other girl's way, her pale greens twinkling.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Even though it was the sound of plastic on plastic instead of music filling the air, Mashiro's crimson eyes still stared out into the distance and her body swayed slightly like a metronome, the same way she had when Ellie had first met her and started humming. It was through this trancelike-state that the pale pianist could compose her most vivid and stirring melodies. Thankfully, Ellie needed not wait long for the trance to pass, and with a blink Mashiro's mind returned to the study room she was in, processing the words spoken to her just a few moments prior. "Dedication?" Mashiro echoed, smiling wryly as she dismantled her keyboard and smartly packed it away. "My family likes to call it a sickness that only music can cure. But...thank you." That was a common jest from her cousin Yuki, and offense was neither given nor taken from that remark. The wryness in Mashiro's smile faded quickly, replaced by that slightly ambiguous frown that she tended to wear as she sat back down at her desk, adjusting the long sleeves and dress skirt that she still wore despite the warming weather. "How have you been, Ellie-san? I hope I haven't delayed you too long with my improvisation..." Mashiro remarked, fiddling around with the various papers that were left on the desk, scraps of messily-scrawled musical score and various essays in impeccable lettering. There was a strange and awkward feeling pressing at the back of the musician's mind as her red eyes looked to Ellie's greens. Only now did it really strike the pale girl that she had someone she could really could possible call a friend outside the ones her family had gathered, and because of that, she wasn't exactly in the mood to dive into coursework, at least just not yet. A quiet laugh escapes Ellie at Mashiro's comment. It's an open, friendly sound, filled with amusement and good humor. "Well, if it's a sickness, I'd say that music being the cure is a wonderful thing!" she proclaims, her eyes following the movements of the other girl as she dismantles the keyboard and puts it to the side. "A cure like that can lead to great things, I'd think," she adds, a soft smile tilting her lips up. " 'cause a cure like that can help a great many people. Speak to a great many people." Her spoken Japanese is much more easily understood now than when they had first met. She's still got that Kansai-ben accent, though it's not nearly as strong as it used to be. Her speech patterns are slowly aligning with those of the Fukui region, sounding more sing song with a distinctly rural flow. It's a curious mixture, especially with the undertones of her foreign accent. But at least it's not so broken!
At Mashiro's questions, though, she directs a reassuring smile the other's way.
"Oh no, you don't have to worry about any delay. I'd only arrived shortly before you stopped."
Pushing herself off of the door frame, she enters the room, closing the door behind her as she does so. Moving towards the desk, she pulls out an unoccupied chair and places her bookbag next to it. Untying the light jacket from around her waist, she drapes it over the back of the chair. Casually plopping down into it, she leans back in the chair, her whole posture easy and relaxed. Still a bit warm from her run, she sangs the collar of her blouse and lightly tugs at it to allow greater airflow. "Phew! I'm glad they've got the a/c on! It's getting warm out!" she exclaims, her other hand lifting her pony tail and draping it over her left shoulder so that the back of her neck can cool down too.
"As for how I've been..." she flashes Mashiro a quick smile, the warmth in her eyes clear and easy to read. "I've been doing all right. Busy with classwork and checking out clubs. Haven't been able to make a choice yet, though."
Drawn by the other's motions, Ellie glances down curiously at all the papers on the desk. Leaning forward to get a closer look, she tilts her head slightly. Most of it looks to be music related, with a few pages that look like essays. But she draws herself back from her inspection, not wanting to seem rude.
Returning her eyes back to Mashiros' face, she asks, "And how've you been, Mashiro?" Gesturing down at the papers on the desk, she adds, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Seems like you've been pretty busy yourself. Is that a song you're writing?"

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Warm? Mashiro looked up from her desk to give Ellie's outfit a quick lookover, tilting her head in confusion as her usual frown seemed to intensify ever so slightly. Indeed it was the summer uniform, shorter than the winter uniform that Mashiro still had to wear. From the depths of her memory, the pianist recalled their first meeting not too long ago where the green-eyed girl was all bundled up. Perhaps Ellie had a smaller band of temperatures she was tolerant of, Mashiro mused for a moment as she looked back down to organize her papers. "Ah, well, I have been doing well enough. Classes are..." Mashiro trailed off, stacking the essays up into a single pile as she thought of the best way to word her situation, managing only a "...moving along well," in the end. It was an understatement, as she was wont to do. For the most part, the musician had little, if any, struggle with coursework, which afforded her the luxury of all the composing time she could ask for, reflected in the far larger piles of musical score around her. She looked up to Ellie again, seeing the writer's smile. It was a warm smile, and it put Mashiro a little more at ease, even though she was still struggling for the right words to describe the remaining papers around her. "Ah...This is...a lot of this is just scraps of melodies that drift in and out of my mind," the composer finally said. "Ah, very little of it is cohesive, but...it's better to have it out in case I need it than to be scrambling for inspiration later." Idly, she let her slender fingers ruffle through a small stack, each paper titled with only a number, threatening to reach five digits soon. Without a more elegant solution, Mashiro decided to dive right into where her curiosity was leading her, if only to push back work just a moment longer. "Ah...Looking for clubs?" Mashiro asked, trying to make sure. "Ah...Now that I think of it, I really haven't joined one myself. I still have a small...circle of musicians at home in Tokyo..." MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

"Scraps, huh?" Ellie muses, her eyes once again dropping to the musical paper. Turning her head to the side, her eyes follow the flow of the notes on the sheets. She's only got a rudimentary understanding of reading music. Most of her knowledge comes from what she'd been taught in elementary school music class and Sunday choir at their local church. Which is to say, she knows not much more than the basics. Just from looking at the snippets of music, she can tell that Mashiro's level is far above her own. Smiling, she looks up into Mashiro's eyes. "I kinda do the same thing, myself," she says, softly. "Though, with words and stories instead. Some poetry, doodles and what-not." Gesturing at the music pile, she raises an eyebrow. "It's a creator's curse. You get an idea that just jumps at you, out of nowhere. And you just gotta write it down, before it jumps away!" She makes a motion of trying to snatch something in the air in front of her, before opening her hand palm up and empty. Sighing she shakes her head sadly, "It's a frustrating thing, to remember that you had a great idea, but to not recall the actual idea." Shrugging, her smile turns wry. "Though, to be fair, it happens all the time with me, so I've kinda gotten used to it." Pausing, she gives a sudden wink Mashiro's way, her tone turning playful. "Ah, but there's plenty of ideas out there. Always got a chance to catch another one. So I try not to miss the ones I can't catch. Besides, sometimes, they come back later all on their own."
Leaning over to the side, she starts digging around in her bookbag. As she does so, she continues to talk.
"But, I'm glad you're doing well in school. It's always nice to hear when people are doing well." Pulling out a notebook and a rough canvas pencil case, she sets them on the table, slightly to her left. Then Mashiro asks her about the clubs. Pale greens lighting up in enthusiasm, Ellie leans forward excitedly.
"Yeah! I've heard that being in a club is a must in Japanese schools. How they can be a lot of fun, but also a great way find people who have similar interests to you." Hearing that Mashiro has musician friends back in Tokyo, her eyes widen and she leans in even closer. Her ponytail slips over her shoulder, swaying with her movements.
"You have musician friends back in Tokyo?" Eyes twinkling, she asks, her eagerness and curiosity unmistakable. "As in, you were in a band?"

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Wordlessly, Mashiro nodded as Ellie talked about her effectively indentical means of wrangling a wayward muse, keeping her usual frown on her face despite finding it reassuring that someone else shared the same issue with fleeting inspiration. As the green-eyed girl dug into her bookbag, the pianist's pale hands reached for a blank score and a pencil, starting to sketch a motif as Ellie talked about clubs. With a nod, Mashiro confirmed the prevalence of clubs, but was at a loss on to how to explain Fukui's situation. In other schools, there would be clubs for various arts, but in an art school like Fukui, there were as many circles for artists for publishing their works as there were proper clubs. But there wasn't any need to explain as the topic shifted to Mashiro again, or rather the friends she had. Though her crimson eyes were already looking down at the few notes that were lightly scrawled into the paper, a downcast look seemed to pass through as her free hand started to twirl a stray lock of hair that was long enough to reach the table. It took another moment for Mashiro to think and she hastily erased the few notes that were on the page before looking back to Ellie. "Ah...while we called ourselves the 'Starfish Cafe Quartet', we weren't a band," Mashiro said, the frown dissipating. Though she looked forward to Ellie, her hand was quickly writing, erasing, and writing notes onto the page. "Ah...Starfish Cafe was a place we would hang out a lot, and while we had our own takes on music, the instruments, if you will, that we chose made it rather difficult to collaborate on a single work. Discuss techniques...perhaps. But we never composed a single song for all four of us." Mashiro pulled another sheet of paper near her, a blank one this time, and quickly jotted down notes. The motion was clearly practiced, written down before hundreds, if not thousands of times before, and clear enough for Ellie to read where she sat. "Ah, Ageha-chan played the guitar. Her guitar was one she salvaged and repaired when she was..." Mashiro paused verbally and physically for a moment, as if holding her breath, before continuing again. "...when she was younger and had to take care of herself more. She taught herself, since it was the hobby she picked up due to being...on her own. A bit rough in terms of technique, but...it has it's own flavor." With a smile, Mashiro's pencil tapped against the paper where the musical phrase she wrote ended. The melody bluntly written in minor key, lacking any sort of subtle technique that would have smoothed it out. Then, a flick of the wrist shifted the paper down a bit and Mashiro began to write another melody with that same practiced hand. "Ah, then Hikari-chan played the flute, one that her mother gave her and taught her how to use. She's very classical in terms of her style because of it..." There was a pause as if Mashiro wanted to say more and the way she tugged at her hair and spun the pencil in her hand made it clear it was another mental translation block that was going on. Beneath her pencil was another melody, one would have mistaken as written in a major key at a glance, but was a complex blend of minor notes and borrowed major notes. Another flick of the wrist allowed for Mashiro to start writing her third phrase. "Ah, and lastly, Tanya-chan. She actually sang. It started as breathing exercises due to her...m-medical issues, but I suppose you would understand the notion of taking otherwise droll medical therapy and making it fun as possible, right?" This time, Mashiro smiled, though it was a rather weak one. The melody below was once more in minor key, with notes bunched up as if constrained by pained breathing. Mashiro glanced down to the three phrases and nodded. Her mind seemed to be refreshed and the page was pushed aside in favor of the score sheet she was writing on earlier. "Ah...Of the four of us, only I wanted music to be a career. Ageha-chan's penchant for repairing even the most broken of items lead her down an engineer's path. Hikari is poised to take over the family business. And Tanya surprisingly became enamoured in medicine herself." The entire time she spoke, her hand was still writing music, even though her crimson eyes were on Ellie the entire time, as if trying to study her. This time the melody was in a major key, lighter and jovial. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

Ellie doesn't miss the subtle shift in Mashiro's expression, or the hair twirling, when she asks about Mahiro's musician friends. She listens quietly as the other girl speaks, giving appropriate sounds of affirmation to show that she’s paying attention to Mashiro, but making sure not to interrupt her. Every now and then, she drops her gaze down to the other's fingers as they scribble out what looks like different lines of music. Whenever she shifts to a different person, Ellie notices how Mashiro starts a new line of music notes. Every time Mashiro changes who's she's talking about, she changes how the notes line up on the paper, as well as the spacing of the notes in relation to each other. Ellie picks up on this, but she can't really read the music. Still, she finds it rather fascinating to watch.
At the part about Tanya-chan, though, Ellie's attention snaps back to Mashiro's face. Expression turning thoughtful, she nods her head in agreement when Mashiro mentions turning medical therapy into something more entertaining. She's been in that position herself. In fact, that's one of the reasons why she became so interested in writing and drawing. At the thought, she flexes her fingers, splaying them out over the tabletop, and then slowly relaxes them. She can feel the old itch to create something building in her, but it's not yet solidified into something concrete, so she leaves it to simmer in the back of her mind.
Hearing about the paths the other girls are going down, Ellie smiles. Directing her friendly gaze Mashiro's way, she speaks.
"Well, it sounds like you have a nice group of friends back in Tokyo. Seems like you all helped each other out and worked well together." She can't help the warmth that fills her words at that. "It's wonderful, when folks like that come into your life. Even if it doesn't last, due to circumstances or what-not, it's always nice to revisit those times." Her tone turns wistful when she says this, but Ellie shakes herself out of it pretty quickly. It wouldn't do to bring down the mood, not when they're having such a nice and relaxing chat.
Besides, they'd ended on good terms. It was just that circumstances had changed, was all.
Clearing her throat, Ellie continues. "Like I said earlier, it's nice to hear when other's are doing well. And it seems like those friends of yours are doing pretty good right now." Nodding down towards the newly written music, she asks, her curiosity getting the better of her, "Pardon my rudeness, but what's that? I noticed the whole time you were talking, that you were writing them down. Are they songs?" She leans forward slightly, to get a better look at them. "You kept changing them up, so maybe just snippets if songs?" She glances up at Mashiro, to see if she's right in her guess, her pale greens dancing with curiosity.

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Behind crimson eyes Mashiro pondered why Ellie's reaction to her story about Tanya was different before remembering the medicines she took when they first met at the cafe. The pianist knew not to push the thought any further; if Ellie wanted to talk about it more she was free to do it when she felt like it. Instead, she kept writing the melody bouncing in the back of her mind as Ellie took her turn to speak, her hand moving automatically as she thought about her friends again. They still kept in touch, though perhaps not as much due to proximity, save for Tanya, whose limitations were nullified by the use of keyboards and thus was far more chatty. But the nostalgia faded, or rather shifted as she picked up on Ellie's wistful tone, prompting a blink from the composer as she realigned her thoughts. In one hand Mashiro's pencil spun idly and the other her lock of pale white hair. The notes were written down already and the pianist had little inclination to erase and correct them to compensate for the sudden change of mood. And so she moved the paper up once more and started to write on the next bar, deciding to make a second movement instead of starting from scratch. "Ah...? This...?" Mashiro asked, tilting her head slightly to the side with her usual frown. Though she looked up towards Ellie, her writing hand seemed to be continuously inspired. "Well, muse can strike at the most erratic of times, but sometimes I do need a bit of a warmup," the composer explained. "Ah, a warmup? A refresher? Ah...Well, I suppose those leitmotifs aren't the most technically proper, as I composed those long before I came to Fukui, but it still follows the usual way I try to encapsulate emotion into the composition. A-anyways..." Mashiro shook her head and quickly glanced out the window. The late spring sun still shined brightly, but the musician was wary that the later sunsets would hide the rapid passage of time. Mashiro really was having fun chatting with Ellie, but reminded herself of why there were meeting up today. "Ah, Ellie-san, I'm sorry..." Mashiro started, letting go of her hair with one hand and slowing with with her writing with the other, as if it was unwilling to stop just yet. Honestly, Ellie finds herself quite impressed with how Mashiro is able to keep writing out her music while holding a conversation at the same time. She's talked while drawing before, but that was on something that doesn't take much concentration. Music seems like something that needs more attention given to it than a few doodles. Granted, it could be that what Mashiro is writing down is the music equivalent to doodles, but she's not quite convinced of that.
Then Mashiro answers her question, which seems to be in line to her doodle thoughts, so maybe? She's broken from her musings when the other girl speaks her name softly. The tone is apologetic, and she even says she's sorry. Raising an eyebrow at the apology, Ellie leans forward and rests her chin in her left hand.
"What are you saying sorry for?" she asks, her own tone somewhat amused. Lifting her head, she waves the freed hand and shakes her head at the same time. "No need for it." Smile warm, she shrugs. "I enjoy our conversations. If it means there's a bit of a delay in my studies to get to know you better, I don't mind." Giving a playful wink, Ellie bends down and retrieves her study material.
Opening the part of the book that she's been struggling with, she drags her notebook to her and flips it open to where she'd left off. Glancing up through her bangs at Mashiro, she give a somewhat embarrassed smile.
"Don't mind the margins. My mind tends to wander a lot in class. And these are the results." The margins of the notebook are crammed full of doodles and sketches. Interspersed between those are broken phrases and words, most of them in English. The start of poems and ideas for stories. The words sometimes morph into the images, only to taper off back into other words, as if completing a sentence. If one were to flip through the notebook, one would see that almost all the pages are in a similar state.
Clearing her throat, Ellie reaches forward and taps the spot in the book. "So, here's where I'm having trouble. This kanji is something I just can't figure out. And the themes aren't making a whole lot of sense to me..."

“ Without music, life would be a mistake. Shy, coy, apologies over the slightest thing was a bad habit that Mashiro was unsure of where she had picked up. Her parents were rather stubborn and unapologetic, even when it came to handling customers in their shop, and her brother was more rough than both of their parents combined, and her twin sister was...not even a good point of reference. Still, Ellie seemed to quickly read the atmosphere, which the composer was rather thankful for, though it begged the question of if Mashiro was just that transparent or if Ellie was that sharp. Hands freed themselves of hair and pencil as Ellie remarked about how she did enjoy their little conversations, even though it delayed the inevitable. Mashiro never gave much thought as to whether or not she was actively boring Ellie the entire time, but the blonde's words seemed to be a relief, easing the constant frown that the white-haired girl wore. Though not short by any means, Mashiro stood up from her chair to look over Ellie's notebook. Of course, being asked to not mind the margins would lead to Mashiro taking a moment to pore over it. The musician knew enough English to translate what was written, but further meaning was obscured by the scatted nature of the thoughts. Perhaps more clear were the doodles. An odd sense of familiarity washed over Mashiro. Instead of musical notes, it was words and drawings, but in the end, it seemed like Ellie's sense of creativity and method of capturing it, much like as they discussed before, were very similar. Any further musing was cut short as Ellie dove right into the heart of the matter, and crimson eyes narrowed as they locked onto where Ellie pointed, then around the blocks of text to understand the kanji. It took a little longer for Mashiro to absorb all the information, but once she had it all figured out, the pianist nodded. "Ah...right. I see. So, the context of this one is actually..." --- "Ah...is...is that it?" Mashiro asked, he usual frown on her face as she looked out the window to gauge the passage of time. The early summer sun was deceiving. Though there was ample lighting pouring through the windows, it took no small amount of time to go through Ellie's assignment. But in that time, the pair was rather thorough, for better or worse. MADE BY KAIZU OF WW AND TWF

At Mashiro's question, Ellie blinks down at the page and goes over what they'd been working on. Nodding to herself, she looks up at Mashiro with a satisfied smile. "Yep! Looks like we've finished everything that needed doing." Glancing back down at her notebook, she returns her attention to her pale companion, her smile now turning a bit triumphant. "I think we even got a little bit ahead, which is awesome!"
Closing her notebook, she follows Mashiro's line of sight and finds herself staring out of the room's windows. Daylight still shines through the windows, but the color and quality of it has changed from when she'd first arrived. Pulling out her phone, she checks the time, her eyes widening a bit.
"Oh wow! We've been working for a good while," she exclaims in her surprise. "It's almost dinner time!"
Hurriedly, she packs up all of her books and materials. Rising from her seat, she slings her bookbag over her shoulder and pushes her chair in. Turning towards Mashiro, she can't help the cheerful smile that lights up her face.
"Mashiro, you've been wonderful! You made things so easy to understand! And you didn't get too upset with me when it took me a while to get something." Grin turning sheepish, she twirls a strand of her hair in her finger. "I'm glad you agreed to this meeting. You've been a great help!" Pale greens shimmering in the light flowing from the windows, she adds, "And if you'd be kind enough to do this again sometime, I'd be most grateful."
Glancing down at her phone again, she nods to herself. Sliding her phone into a side pocket on her bag, she returns her attention back to Mashiro.
"I promised to meet up with a few girls for dinner, so I gotta get going." Stepping forward, she places her hands flat on the table and leans towards the other girl. Strands of honeyed hair drift about her face, her pony tail gleaming in the buttery light as it tumbles over her left shoulder. Tone and expression earnest, lips quirked up in a small smile, she murmurs, "Thank you."
Stepping back, she turns away and moves over to the door. Opening it, she turns back to Mashiro and says, "Really. You don't know how much help you've been to me. Thank you so much!" Giving a proper Japanese bow (she's been practicing!), she slips out of the door and into the library. With a spring in her step and a tune on her lips, she waves cheerily at the librarian behind the desk and heads over to the dinning hall.
