language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see |
At the start, the German language was something Yumeko decided to learn on a whim. To her, there was a sort of majesty in it that was somehow admirable. Then her fascination grew, branching out into German history and literature, supported by her family both in Japan and overseas. Some elements of her German studies even seemed to ever-so-slightly creep into her writing as well.
The Fukui Library, owing the diverse student body, actually had a few books that were in German, albeit in normal print. Thankfully, her tablet was fairly good at OCR, meaning she was able to read the contents nonetheless. It was not too long after classes had ended that Yumeko had made her way to the corner of the library, holding up her tablet against the shelves and sliding its camera across the spines. The catalogue was generally accurate, giving location down to an individual shelf, meaning Yumeko didn't need to scan too much to find what she was looking for: a textbook regarding the history of German Literature.
Yumeko held her prize close to her in one arm, its cover clearly in view for any passerby, the other still using her cane to navigate the the space between the shelves. For the most part, she was used to the distance that she could feasibly go without, but in the past few days she came across shelves that were in a different space than expected, so she was forced to rely on her cane for safety. The thin retractable cane was in her bookbag, opting for the ornate black-and-silver one made by her cousin which produced a soft sound every time it tapped against the metal and wooden shelves.
The novelist had already found what she was looking for but wasn't in the mood just yet to head to the Music Building to read, so she opted to make her way to the braille section, which was off in another corner of the vast library. Every now and then, Yumeko would hear the sounds of footsteps or whispered voices and she would pause a bit, holding her cane close to herself as if her cane was to support her gait rather than for guidance. The sounds would either pass or Yumeko would figure she could maneuver around them.
That is until she her heard another set of footsteps that she could determine if they were passing or staying still. Once more, the small brunette paused, tilting and rotating her head to try and make sense of the sounds. Still unable to parse what she was hearing, she proceeded further, the tip of the cane running along the bottom of the shelves. For a moment, she felt the resistance of the cane give way, telling her she was at the end of the shelf, but it was quickly followed by another sensation - one of neither wood nor metal. Reflexively, Yumeko withdrew her cane to her side again, figuring she had hit someone's leg by accident. Without listening for a reaction, Yumeko looked roughly to the average height of her classmates.
"Ah. Entschuldigung."
Yumeko flinched at the sound of German leaving her mouth. Thankfully, years of practice wiped most of her accent, but it was still a bit of an embarrassment for her mind to still thinking in German, largely from reading off all the titles on the spines not too long ago. She cleared her throat before speaking again, this time saying in Japanese, "Apologies." She tried to stand a bit back, hoping that she would now be out of way of whoever she had just run into. |

Akiko wanted to make sure she truly did memorize the layout of the school building as she walked through it. She wasn't carrying anything as she went around. Her work was done and she wants to make sure her memory is still working fine while imagining possible scenarios in her 'little' stories she writes. The Library is quite big so she decides to head there for the moment. She might even find any intriguing books to read?...who knows what fate will lead her. She made sure to not bump into the students on her way to the library as she had seen some students having a few accidents while carrying either books or drawn goods which fell down on contact. It's truly a shame to these creative objects to be dirtied in these ways even though there was no ill intent. pity for the people in the incidents too.
Akiko made sure to silently navigate herself through the library as she arrived to not disturb her fellow peers and cause possible accidents. Her mind drifted off till she felt something quite unfitting for a library hit against her leg. She looked down to see it was some kind of a cane which quickly withdrew to the side of its wielder. Akiko made sure to get a good look at the female. Quite small and formal looking, short brownish hair, seemingly not a foreigner yet you can never be sure with people's looks. What caught her attention though is the words the female spoke. German? quite interesting for a student to speak that language so openly here. Another thing that is quite odd to her is the fact she looks at her chest?..either a pervert or it's an accident?..On closer examination it seems to be a disability. It would explain the cane and look towards the chest. Probably just to seem polite as many have a rather average height. Could be entertaining to play around though~..
"Mach dir keine sorge meine liebe~.." She replied in a rather flirtatious tone as she was kind of confident by the fact the female in front of her doesn't seem too much fond of the situation. Akiko with a hearable German accent with Yumeko was directly able to notice as she had listened to multiple audios of great German historians and for general learning purposes.. Yumeko was able to notice that first. The language used to reply was German. Second. The voice actually came from higher up than normally, indicating this person is actually taller than the other students.
Akiko was quite amused by the small figure in front of her as she went a step closer to close the distance Yumeko had created "Sprichst du Deutsch? oder bist du eher eine normale Schülerin die aus spaß auf Deutsch geantwortet hat~?" Akiko asks in German with the same accent. Her voice was quite comfortable and soft to hear yet that flirtatious tone was there again. Making it have a bit more spice.

Hearing a response German while suprising, still wasn't beyond Yumeko's expectations, not since there were so many students from overseas. Nor was the fact that the voice came from from an altitude higher than expected - averages are average and if this person was from Germany, then they'd be taller than the usual Japanese girl. No, what really caught Yumeko off-guard was the flirtatious tone.
In a ways, it was amusing, and it showed on her face with a smile and a briefly-raised eyebrow. In the past, such statements, albeit in Japanese would draw her ire, but perhaps her girlfriend's own flirtatious nature took the edge off of it. Perhaps the girl in front of her was also of a similar theatrical background.
"<Well, I would like to consider myself a normal student who is also fluent in German.>" Yumeko replied, keeping for a more reserved and formal tone. She adjusted her gaze to try and meet the gaze of the other girl. "<Admittedly, Japanese is my first language, with German being something I picked up tangentially at first and later on as a means of expanding my art.>"
The fact that the voice seemed to get a bit closer along with the faint footsteps told the novelist that she was not in the other girl's way. Yumeko herself was in no rush and considered this a rare opportunity to perhaps make friends with another German-speaker. Her posture relaxed a little, letting her cane rest against her naturally as her mind shifted a bit into her 'detective mode' - even with her glassy grey eyes being what they were, she wanted to learn a much as she could.
"<On that note, I must confess some degree of curiosity.>" Yumeko continued, explaining further. "<In terms of languages, I have noted that of my classmates who are fluent in another language beyond Japaneese, it is generally their mother tongue. Of course...it would be rude of me to assume, so if you could indulge my curiosity...I would ask if German is your native language.>" |
